The changing nature of higher education systems and academic work all around the world generally ... more The changing nature of higher education systems and academic work all around the world generally and in Turkey specifically highlight the need for academics to use, analyze, and process so much information simultaneously, and deliver results at a specific period of time, which cause them mental workload. Thus, this chapter addresses the problem of understanding and exploring the dynamics of mental workload in Turkish academic setting. The main data for the analysis comes from a wide field research, including 505 questionnaires and 45 in-depth interviews with academics in various universities of Turkey. The mixed methods research revealed that growing publication pressures, administrative work, teaching and supervision hours, the unpredictability of academic positions, the curse of flexibility, and the bureau- cratic nature of universities are some of the factors, leading to mental workload in Turkish academia. The other dynamics, such as academic incentive system, demanding nomination/promotion criteria, lack of family-work life balance, were also explored.
S hanty towns – or gecekondu settlements – in large Turkish cities are mostly populated by low-in... more S hanty towns – or gecekondu settlements – in large Turkish cities are mostly populated by low-income families, many of which have migrated from the villages of Central Anatolia. The rise of the Islamist party AKP in the 1990s and 2000s had a large impact on how these gecekondus are examined, and how they are perceived to reflect key issues at play in Turkish society: welfare, local identity, religious communities and the rise of civil society. Having lived in one of these neighbourhoods in Ankara, Burcu Şentürk sheds light on the experience of gecekondu dwelling in Turkey. By focusing on this aspect, she brings to the fore issues such as urbanisation, modernisation and development, as well as examining the impact these kinds of phenomena have on generation gaps and the role of women in Turkish society. By using the experience of three generations of gecekondu dwellers as a framework, Şentürk is able to chart the emergence, development and the gradual breakdown of social relations, and how the dynamics of these have changed during the course of the latter half of the twentieth century. 'By looking at the urban poor, Urban Poverty in Turkey offers a new perspective on modernisation in Turkey. It is a well-researched overview of the relevant and current research in the field, but through its focus on the group that has not been previously studied the work offers valuable and unexpected insight on the impact of modernisation on the poor; in particular the analysis of the different experiences of different generations of slum dwellers and the process of growth and development of the slums are both original and enlightening.' She adds depth to this account by describing the process of migration, outlining the rural backgrounds of the migrants, as well as the motives for their move. The development of the community, with a second wave of immigrants, is described and analysed with skill and understanding. Her mekansal ve toplumsal durum gibi gecekondular ve gecekondulular da ilk ortaya çıktıkları günk... more Her mekansal ve toplumsal durum gibi gecekondular ve gecekondulular da ilk ortaya çıktıkları günkü gibi kalmamış, bir dizi dönüşüm geçirmiş ve geçirmekteydi. Bu çalışmada da gecekondu mahallelerinde yaşanan fiziksel ve toplumsal değişimler Ege Mahallesi'ne yansıdığı yüzüyle, hem bu mahallenin özgünlükleri hem de diğer gecekondu mahalleleriyle benzerlikleri göz önünde tutularak anlatılmaktadır. Mahallelilerin kuşaklar içindeki değişimi, anlatırken başvurdukları hikayeler, çoğunlukla eğitim, kadınların çalışması, dağıtılan sosyal yardımlar ve mahallede hissedilen güvensizlik ve suç meselelerinde düğümleniyordu. Bu sebeple çalışmanın dördüncü bölümü yine mahallelilerin anlatılarına dayanılarak bu meselelere ayrıldı. Kırsal göçmenler şehirde bir mahalle kurmuş, emekleriyle bu mahalleyi şehrin bir parçası haline getirmiş, çeşitli dinamiklerle mahalle kaçınılmaz olarak değişmişti ve sonrasında kentsel dönüşüm gelip çatmıştı. Kitabın beşinci bölümünde anlatıldığı üzere gecekonduların mülk sahipliklerindeki farklılıklar ve mahallede iki farklı kentsel reformun uygulanması mahallelileri kentsel dönüşümün farklı yüzleriyle karşılaştırmıştı. Bahsi geçen bölüm kentsel dönüşümü anlattığı kadar farklılaşan çıkarların ve mülk sahipliğinin toplumsal dayanışma ve hareketliliğe olan etkisini de tartışmakta. Researchers in labour economics, human resources, and many other social science disciplines conduct studies on employment structure, work life, organizational culture in logistics sector. As the number of female employees and managers increase in the sector, research about this subject appeared recently along with the other research. This study examines the relation between perception femininity and the emotional labour among the white collar employees of logistic companies in Turkey. Due to the limited researches that examine the logistics sector in the context of the gender and emotional labour, this study tries to understand the presence and dynamics of emotional labour through gendered nature of working life in service sector.

Ankara’da yaşadığım yıllarda bir kez bile içinden geçmediğim ve sonrasında beni sarıp sarmalayan ... more Ankara’da yaşadığım yıllarda bir kez bile içinden geçmediğim ve sonrasında beni sarıp sarmalayan Ege Mahallesi’ne, İngiltere’de yaptığım doktora tezimin alan araştırması için düştü yolum. Bir sene öncesinde Ankara’da çeşitli mahallelerde kısa görüşmeler ve geziler ile gerçekleştirdiğim pilot çalışma sonrasında tapu sahibi olmak, sağlık riski barındıran bir bölgede oturmak gibi dinamiklerle ve farklılıklarla şekillenen mülkiyet ilişkileri dolayısıyla bu mahalleyi alan araştırması için belirledim. Şimdi sıra “gelişime” yeni açılan yerlerde kentsel mülkiyet ilişkilerinin beraberinde getirdikleri toplumsal hareketleri, dayanışmayı, toplumsal çözülmeleri bizzat bu alanlarda yaşayanların dilinden dinlemekteydi, ama aklımda alan çalışmasına dair öyle çok soru birikmişti ki! Binlerce kilometre öteden alan araştırmasının taslağını çıkartmak, neler yapabileceğimi, sınırlılıklarımın ne olduğunu anlamaya çalışmak çok zordu. Peki birdenbire bir mahalleye gidip araştırma yapmaya çalışmak ve o araştırmayı İngilizce dillendirmek ne kadar etikti? İngiltere’de doktora yapan bir araştırmacı olarak beni ne kadar kendilerinden görebilirlerdi ki! Araştırmacının illa ki içinde sosyalleştiği toplumsal kesim ile mi çalışması gerekiyor? Lise yıllarına kadar kaloriferli bir evde yaşamamış biri olarak, “gecekondu” deneyiminden çok mu uzaktım? İçinde yetişilen sosyal kesimin araştırmacıyı dışarıdan gördüğü durumlar da yok muydu? Ya da tam tersi, kendisinin alışık olmadığı bir toplumsal kesimle araştırma yapan araştırmacıların o toplumsal kesim tarafından benimsendiği de görülmedik-duyulmadık değildi. Hem kimliklerde birebir örtüşmenin olması zaten mümkün değildi (Kelly vd. 1994, Mellor 2007, Ramazanoğlu ve Holland 2002).

The diversification of gender‐based priorities and the necessities of refugees have led refugee N... more The diversification of gender‐based priorities and the necessities of refugees have led refugee NGOs to launch activities specifically for women, or urged women‐only NGOs to take action particularly for refugee women in Turkey. Drawing upon a qualitative research in Gaziantep in Turkey, which host a large population of Syrian refugees, this study seeks to answer the question “How effective are NGOs in empowering Syrian refugee women in Turkey?” It is argued that NGOs working in the provision of assistance to refugees cannot be treated as a homogeneous group in terms of the degree and form of their influences on the empowerment of refugee women, and the individual NGO’s standpoints may shape their effects. Data from interviews with NGO representatives and Syrian women who have received support from NGOs indicate that the NGOs’ perceptions of women’s issues and their contribution to the empowerment of women are closely linked to their type.

Kadinlarin dusuk istihdamina ve toplumun her alaninda karsilastiklari cinsel ayrimciliga ragmen, ulkedeki akademik personeldeki kadin orani pek cok Avrupa ulkesindeki kadin akademisyen oranindan yuksektir. Ote yandan bu yuksek oran kadinlarin akademik yonetimdeki temsiliyetlerine beklenen olcude yansimamakta ve ayrica kadinlarin universite bolumlerine dagilimlari arasinda ciddi farklar gorulmektedir. Bu calisma istatistiksel verilere ve Turkiye’deki universitelerde yapilan arastirmalara dayanarak kadinlarin akademideki varliklarinin dinamiklerini analiz etmeyi hedeflemektedir. Bu dogrultuda arastirmada, Turkiye’deki kadin akademisyenlerin universitelerde ve yonetim kademelerindeki konumlari ve kadin akademisyenlerin bolumlere gore dagilimindaki sayisal esitsizlik uzerinden akademik calismanin cinsiyetlendirilmis yapisi tartisilacaktir.

Due to the ongoing conflict in Syria and all that it signifies, the number of women refugees is s... more Due to the ongoing conflict in Syria and all that it signifies, the number of women refugees is seeing a rapid upturn, and this has led to a rise in the number of non-governmental organizations (NGOs) in Turkey providing support to this specific segment of society. Most of the studies carried out in the field recently focus on the status of Syrian women in Turkey and the impacts migration has had on them, while the perspectives of NGOs on the empowerment of women has been, on the whole, understudied. Based on the data collected from representatives of NGOs this study aims to fill this gap by analysing the approaches and practices of NGOs to the empowerment of refugee women. The results clearly indicate that the approach of NGOs to the empowerment of women differ depending on their type, being either family-oriented, protection-based, or women solidarity-focused. Üretim faaliyeti içinde kazandığı önemle birlikte farklı akademik disiplinler lojistik sektörü il... more Üretim faaliyeti içinde kazandığı önemle birlikte farklı akademik disiplinler lojistik sektörü ile ilgilenmeye başlamıştır. Çalışma ekonomisi, insan kaynakları ve diğer birçok sosyal bilimler alanındaki araştırmacılar lojistik sektöründeki istihdam yapısına, çalışma hayatına, örgütsel kültür ve benzeri özelliklere dair araştırmalar yürütmüştür. Lojistik sektöründeki kadın çalışanlar ve yönetici sayılarında artış olması ile de bu konuların yanı sıra sektörde çalışanların cinsiyet dağılımı ve cinsiyet eşitliğinin sağlanmasına yönelik çalışmalar da son yıllarda başlamıştır. Türkiye'de lojistik alanındaki örgütlerdeki cinsiyet kompozisyonu ve sektörde kadın çalışanların çalışma hayatına dair araştırmalar çok sınırlıdır. Literatürdeki bu eksiklikten yola çıkarak bu çalışma Türkiye'de lojistik sektöründe çalışan kadınların çalışma koşullarını anlamayı amaçlamaktadır. Bu amaç doğrultusunda İzmir'de lojistik sektöründe çalışan kadınlarla derinlemesine mülakatlar gerçekleştirilmiştir. Bulgular duygusal emek, iş-aile yaşamı dengesi, toplumsal cinsiyet rolleri çerçevesinde değerlendirilmiştir.
