FAQs
Is this certificate only for students in the College of Engineering?
Expand
No. This certificate is for any student from any major. We welcome students from diverse backgrounds because we feel the collision of different perspectives and skills can help create new ideas.
Can I earn a certificate in all three tracks?
Expand
Students can only earn one certificate and the track will not be listed on the certificate. To earn the certificate, you must complete the requirements for one of the tracks.
Do I need to submit an application before I take the classes?
Expand
No. You only need to submit the completion application, which should be submitted in the term that you will be completing the requirements or later.
Can I count the same courses towards my major/ minor towards the certificate? Is it okay if they overlap?
Expand
We will accept courses for the certificate overlap with your major/minor requirements. You might want to check with your other program to make sure they are ok with the overlap.
Do I need to receive a minimum grade for these courses?
Expand
Students must successfully complete coursework applied toward the certificate by earning a C or better for letter graded courses and Satisfactory or Pass for non-letter graded courses. If the course is offered for a letter grade, it must be taken for a letter grade in order to count towards the certificate requirements.
NOTE: Due to the recent changes in grading policies, classes taken in Spring 2020, Fall 2020, Spring 2021 and Summer 2021 do not need to be taken for a letter grade in order to count towards the certificate. If a class is taken for P/NP or S/U, a grade of P or S is still required in order to apply the class towards the certificate requirements.
May I request to have courses not on the approved list to count toward the certificate?
Expand
Starting Fall 2023, students will not be able to substitute courses.

How long will it take to receive my certificate after submitting the Certificate Completion Application?

Eligible students will receive their certificate as a pdf via email within one month after final grades are posted.  If your application is not approved, you will receive an email with that information.

Yes.
Please see the "How long will it take to receive my Certificate after submitting the Certificate Completion Application?" FAQ for details on the process, which is the same for graduating seniors. Note that the certificate will not be posted on your transcript and you will receive the certificate as a pdf via email.
Who do I contact if I have additional questions?
Expand
Please direct all inquiries to the SCET Academic Program Manager Joo Ae Chu
jooae@berkeley.edu
Can I still apply if I did not submit my application in the term when I completed the certificate requirements?
Expand
Yes, but your application will be reviewed on our standard timeline (once per semester after grades are posted).

Expand
The programs listed under the startup track are not affiliated with SCET and you would need to seek out those opportunities on your own.
