Čhatkú Arts Center (formerly The Heritage Center at Maȟpíya Lúta) began in 1969 as the Red Cloud Indian Art Show. Today, the Čhatkú Arts Center has a gift shop featuring the art of over 300 Native Artists, a renowned Native art collection containing nearly 13,000 pieces, a gallery hosting 2-3 exhibits a year, the annual art show, and much more.

Red Cloud Indian Art Show
The Čhatkú Arts Center hosts the Art Show for ten weeks each summer. All the artwork is for sale, with the proceeds used to support individual artists as well as the work of the Čhatkú Arts Center.

The Čhatkú Arts Center (formerly The Heritage Center at Maȟpíya Lúta) interprets, honors, and celebrates the continuum of contemporary artistic expressions of indigenous people with an emphasis on supporting the Oglala Lakota community through economic opportunities for artists and educational programming for all.

Our Gift Shop
The Gift Shop sells artwork by more than 300 Native artisans annually through our online and in-person store in the Čhatkú Arts Center. We purchase and resell authentic Native-made arts and fine arts, both contemporary and traditional.

One of our goals is to provide economic development opportunities for Native artists and to educate visitors on the importance of authentically made Native art. Art Gallery
The Čhatkú Arts Center Art Gallery is open year long and presents 2-3 exhibitions as well as the Red Cloud Indian Art Show, held annually each summer. The art gallery space currently occupies part of the first floor of the historic Drexel Hall and exhibits an array of historic and contemporary artwork. Stop in to see what’s in our gallery!

Our Resources Center is designed for teachers looking to incorporate art in the classroom. You can find resources on teaching with our contemporary Native art collection, images from our collection, lesson plans, guides, links to other helpful organizations, and more! Maȟpíya Lúta and the Čhatkú Arts Center welcomes visitors year-round to learn about the history of the Lakȟóta people and the vibrancy of Lakȟóta arts and culture today. Tours include a walk around campus that includes learning about history, current programming for students and community, a look inside our award-winning Holy Rosary Church, exploring the gallery and gift shop of the Čhatkú Arts Center, and more!

The Čhatkú Arts Center collection began with the purchase of three prize-winning pieces from the Red Cloud Indian Art Show in 1969, and has grown today to include nearly 13,000 pieces of the Native American contemporary and historical Lakota art.
