The area stayed uninhabited until the Nineteenth Century, but the ancient episcopal seat of Porto, whose holders had a prominent role in the Roman Curia, is still existing. For this reason the monumental complex is the result of the sum of many architectural works and constitutes a complex of considerable interest. The palace was originally a medieval castrum that belonged to the Stefaneschi family. During a trip to Ostia, Pope Pius II perceives the archaeological and strategic relevance of the site. Shortly thereafter, Cardinal Rodrigo Borgia restored the fortress and transformed it into an elegant residence with large cross windows (1476). The church of S. Lucia – cathedral of the episcopal seat - was rebuilt by Cardinal Ascanio Della Corgna (1582), but a decisive renewal took place with Cardinal Flavio Chigi, who made use of the work of Carlo Fontana (1689-91). Cardinal Pietro Ottoboni added a chapel and built a new facade to the palace, equipping it with a monumental staircase (Domenico Gregorini and Pietro Passalacqua, 1737). With Cardinal Bartolomeo Pacca (1821) the palace became the seat of a collection of fragments of ancient sculptures.

The attention to the documentary value of the monument is decisive, leading to the formation of a class of specialists, under the auspices of Boito first and Giovannoni then. This will lead the restoration to become alternative and sometimes hostile to modern design and planning. As a whole, the propensity to conservation is strengthened, in a trend that remains, however, in the context of stylistic restoration.
