During the colonial period in India, a new architectural style was introduced. It was a mixture of various European styles that included the traditional Indian architecture styles. It evolved as an Indo – European architectural heritage in the late 18th to early 20th century CE and that amalgamation was popularly known as Indo-Saracenic architecture. This is an attempt to trace the various architectural styles and movements that were to become the “new” architecture of Madras, under the colonial powers. Colonial buildings have varying styles, such as Palladian, colonial and Indo-Saracenic. The Madras terrace roofing, which was to become popular all over India also appeared at this time. The role of architects and native contractors is noteworthy.

Urban space and public building designs became a means through which the ruling power could demonstrate its
ideology and power after the regime change with the proclamation of the Republic. Among these places, government
houses, take the lead as the representation of the central authority in provincial and district center. It can be said that
there have been some changes in the architecture of these houses, which bridge the gap between the people and the
government along with certain thresholds and periods in the history of the Republic of Türkiye. Especially since the
beginning of the 20th century, while internationalization, universal culture and building creation, and regionalism
and later critical regionalism discourses and architectural practices in this context have been discussed in the world,
in Türkiye, while designing government houses that are concerned about representing the power of the government,
whether the suitability of the regions and culture where they will be built, from planning decisions to material
selections are taken into account or not is the main question of the study. In this context, in the study, the Gaziantep
Old Government House, which was designed and implemented by the Ministry of Public Works in Gaziantep in the
1950s and is now a registered building, was taken as an example and its architecture was evaluated from a critical
regionalism perspective. The harmony of the building with the "place", the concern to reflect the changing ideology,
and how active role of the region and local culture in the design are tried to be revealed in the text, based on Kenneth
Frampton's "Critical Regionalism" discourse. Architectural drawings of the government house, zoning plan of the
built area, photographs of the building, periodicals of that time and literature in the field of regionalism and critical
regionalism constitute the main material of the study. The text aims to contribute to the literature on reading the
design of government houses at the intersection of representation and critical regionalism.

No entanto, 1. The architecture of diagrams: A taxonomy of architectural diagrams. Acesso em 12 jun. 2019. ; Sperling e Rosado (2014); Montaner (2014); e Eisenman (2004). 2.

This research explores a unique cross-disciplinary design methodology that draws parallels between the strategic dynamics of chess and the generation of architectural form. By decoding the positional logic, movement patterns, and hierarchy of chess pieces within selected game sequences—particularly from endgame and middle-game scenarios—this approach establishes a set of spatial transformation rules. These rules govern block creation, vertical hierarchy, landscape articulation, and connective paths. The result is an architecture that is not only responsive to logical progression and layered complexity but also narrative rich, evolving through movement, transformation, and spatial tension. This proposal aims to construct a new design language that bridges gameplay mechanics with formal architectural strategy

In 2022, the Costa Rican Museum of Contemporary Arts and Design (MADC) inaugurated the exhibition "A Project of Trends: 30 Years of Architecture Biennales in Costa Rica." Using the MADC's retrospective as a starting point, this paper studies the dynamics of architectural exhibitions in Costa Rica, specifically exploring the context and tensions surrounding the establishment of the Costa Rican Architecture Biennale (BACR). By analyzing the history of the BACR's foundation, internal organization and awarding patterns, the article examines the conflicting forces emerging from encounters between architecture's intellectual sphere, late modernization processes, and the creation of regulatory frameworks, classification systems, and organizational codes that inevitably stem from

Oldenburg’s properties of third places were established almost three decades ago. In order to understand if these properties still hold and if and how ICTs changed the concept of third places, we looked at affordances and practices in nine third places in Paris. Our findings point out that most of the properties have changed and also three new ones have emerged mixing the physical and the virtual. We also provide implications for ICTs that aim at stimulating and supporting properties of third places.

Phenomenologies of the City: Studies in the History and Philosophy of Architecture brings architecture and urbanism into dialogue with phenomenology. Phenomenology has informed debate about the city from social sciences to cultural studies. Within architecture, however, phenomenological inquiry has been neglecting the question of the city. Addressing this lacuna, this book suggests that the city presents not only the richest, but also the politically most urgent horizon of reference for philosophical reflection on the cultural and ethical dimensions of architecture. The contributors to this volume are architects and scholars of urbanism. Some have backgrounds in literature, history, religious studies, and art history. The book features 16 chapters by younger scholars as well as established thinkers including Peter Carl, David Leatherbarrow, Alberto Pérez-Gomez, Wendy Pullan and Dalibor Vesely. Rather than developing a single theoretical statement, the book addresses architecture’s relationship with the city in a wide range of historical and contemporary contexts. The chapters trace hidden genealogies, and explore the ruptures as much as the persistence of recurrent cultural motifs. Together, these interconnected phenomenologies of the city raise simple but fundamental questions: What is the city for, how is it ordered, and how can it be understood? The book does not advocate a return to a naive sense of ’unity’ or ’order’. Rather, it investigates how architecture can generate meaning and forge as well as contest social and cultural representations.

Function is not always spatially based so that "forms" without spatial objectivity could be possible. Hence, these "follies" could also belong to art since the 'forms' are not obedient to function. It can also be argued that there is a transparent area common between architectural forms that possess sculpture-like properties and large-scale "enterable" sculptural works, which simulate architecture. For this reason, Frank Gehry's architectural form emulates the poetry of sculpture in the same way as Richard Serra's sculpture imbibes and captures the fluid architectural spaces. The paper will present the transparent area between architecture and the arts and the various methods that the arts can be employed to generate non-traditional architectural forms that may in turn result into hybrid architecture. Case studies on the fusion of arts into architecture will be presented as well as creative speculations in the production of newer expressions in architecture.

Considering the need for compilation of case studies on built examples of urban design in India the Institute of Urban Designers India (I U D I) has appealed to its members and other practitioners of urban design to contribute to the cause of illustrating actually built examples. These will help decision makers and young practitioners to have a reference manual of public works that would trigger future ideas. Given the fact that every situation or city or settlement offers a unique set of potential and problems and that several allied disciplines such as conservation landscape architecture interior design and experts from the same are needed to make the solutions workable and successful. The document shows what is possible and how. We welcome comments critiques suggestions and questions on the same so that the case studies are not only understood but help in taking forward the cause and commentary on urban design to the next level.

This thesis investigates the early archaeological activities in Bangladesh, specifically focusing on the "early historic" and "early medieval" period remains of Hindu-Buddhist archaeological sites. Mahasthan is one of these locations that is especially significant, as it not only represents a city site amidst predominantly religious sites in Bangladesh but also boasts a rich history stretching back to the distant past, dating back to the 3rd - 2nd century BC. This city site is contemporaneous with the early historic cities of the Gangetic valley, including Vaishali, Pataliputra, and Kaushambi, to name a few.
The primary objective of this research is to design an Archaeological Museum for Mahasthangarh, and this design proposal aims to showcase the cultural and historical significance of Mahasthan as well as display artifacts and relics excavated from the site. By integrating traditional architectural elements and design sensibilities with modern techniques and futuristic concepts, the museum seeks to create a harmonious blend of the old and the new.
This design proposal tries to highlights the importance of honoring and conserving Mahasthangarh's rich legacy while also gives visitors an engaging and immersive experience. The museum's layout and spatial programs are carefully designed to display artifacts in a way that enhances the power of their stories and provides a meaningful connection to world history.
Overall, this thesis seeks to contribute to the understanding and preservation of Mahasthangarh's archaeological heritage by proposing a well-conceptualized and thoughtfully designed Archaeological Museum that pays homage to the site's history while embracing the possibilities of contemporary and future architectural trend.

The temple works are of varying scales in terms of project size and engagement of the practice. While some works have carried on for decades, some have been of short visits limited to a few hours. Some have stopped at the approach paper stage while some have stopped at the
proposal stage. Some have had the privilege of being able to support analysis of paints and mortars, iconography and paintings while others have had to rely on conjecture considering the needs of the religious establishments that would like to present a complete picture instead of an
archaeologically accurate and faithful one. Our journey in the case of this building type has been varied and with mixed degrees of success or completion.

Until the middle of the twentieth century it was usual for architects to design mosques that did not contain spaces marked apart for women. Shortly afterwards it became the norm to include gender separated areas within mosques. The paper explores first the historical debates around the presence of women in mosques, and the extent, if any, to which these have been reflected in mosque design, past and present. The period since the middle of the last century is examined in detail. What were the societal impulses that led to gender separation? What forms did these separated areas take? What are the architectural consequences of this separation? What discussion around this issue has arisen in both Muslim majority and Muslim minority countries? What are the possibilities for greater gender inclusivity in the mosque? This paper discusses these issues with references to mosques around the world, in both Muslim minority and Muslim majority countries.

Erwin Schrödinger once wrote of modern science and its increasing irrelevance to modern society at large that progressive modern science might not make much common sense to man, it remained largely meaningless to common expression not much as an illogical triangular circle, but more so as a winged lion. This critique might as well be made of much of the recent writing or debates on architectural theory, often deemed to be the avant garde of architectural discourse. The idea of progress in architectural discourse presumes much however unlike science, the progressive shifts do not invalidate previously valid ideas. In architecture, an outmoded approach might still allow the creation habitable shelter and contain some kind of spatial ordering. The notion of progress in architecture is inextricably linked to belief in ideals and any shift occurs through scepticism of such ideals. This paper discusses the role of scepticism in modern architectural thought, and its pivotal role in the consideration of progress in architectural discourse in XVI Italy and the latter day parallel in late 20c.

Ide o prierez tvorbou ateliérov troch katedier, ktoré uskutočňujú výuku v troch študijných programoch: architektúra a urbanizmus, dizajn a voľné výtvarné umenie. V plnej miere to platí o dielach z Katedry výtvarných umení a intermédií, v menšej miere to platí pre dizajnérske a architektonické práce, kde o ich kvalite nerozhodujú len umelecké kritériá. This catalogue presents an overview of the most exceptional artworks pro duced by the students of the Košice School of the Arts in this academic year. The great majority of these works were submitted as graduate projects and theses by students at all degree levels. The catalogue also includes term projects that resonated either at student exhibitions or in student contests, and, overall, provides a look at the artistic production of ateliers at three departments that offer instruction in three study programs: Architecture and Urbanism, Design, and the Fine Arts. The works should thus be per ceived as an articulation of the marriage of pedagogical empiricality and student inventiveness. As regards the selection of the works, it deserves mention that it was made with editorial intent and therefore was not based primarily on of the Department of Fine Arts and Intermedia, which the author of this editorial viewed from the perspective of an arts theorist and curator. To a lesser extent, it applies also to works of architecture and design, where the quality is not decided solely on artistic merits. To get a better idea as to what sample of student work this catalogue represents, it should suffice to say that in the year 2024 / 25, the Faculty had 285 students. This catalogue features the works of 46 of them. The students are arranged alphabetically and each profile is accompanied by a brief description of the works and the department or atelier at which they were produced. The catalog also contains brief annotations of works and their authors are also students. Thus emerged an elementary but rich and representative picture of the state of the current production of the Faculty of Arts at the Technical University of Košice.

Marianna Charitonidou’s book Architectural Drawings as Investigating Devices (2023) presents a survey and key insights into the recent history of representation in architecture. Marianna’s focus is through architects that challenged the discipline through key revolutionary drawings. With examples ranging from Le Corbusier’s Dom-Ino diagram to Mies’ collages, the book investigates insights into the Modern Movement. But it also includes certain tensions that make it relevant and interesting, for instance, John Hejduk’s axonometric projections experiments and Peter Eisenman’s formal axonometric diagrams are placed in contrast to Tschumi’s axonometrics. While Hejduk and Eisenman are presented as representational and formal, Tschumi’s drawings are rather political acts based on the semantics of the architecture program.

We propose drawing as design project process, regarded both as project’s instrumental utility (technology) and condition for disciplinary reflection (art), considering drawing as language whose operability enables innovation in design. At the production level (drawing), two cornerstone conditions are implied: 1. the instrumental ability (technology) and 2. its critical (semantical) evaluation. As subject for analysis we present project drawings from widely recognized contemporary Portuguese designers. We interpret design object as the project’s overall communication exchange, questioning how drawing, as mediator for projectual practice in design, limits the object’s creation and hence its existence as design language? Our answer considers drawing: 1. mediator for representation (through technical expression), 2. classifying function (through program) and 3. interpretative mark of imagination (through authorship).
