This ancient city with over 2,000 years of porcelain-making history is honored as the "Porcelain Capital" and was listed as a UNESCO World Heritage tentative site in 2019.

Historical Origins

The ceramic production in Jingdezhen dates back to the Han Dynasty, spanning more than two millennia. During the Tang Dynasty, Jingdezhen began firing celadon; in the Song Dynasty, it reached its peak with kilns scattered everywhere; the creation of blue-and-white porcelain in the Yuan Dynasty marked a major breakthrough in Chinese ceramic history; during the Ming and Qing Dynasties, Jingdezhen became the designated production site for imperial court porcelain, establishing the famous Imperial Kiln.

The Artistic Charm of Blue-and-White Porcelain

Blue-and-white porcelain is Jingdezhen's most representative ceramic type. Using cobalt oxide as coloring agent, patterns are drawn on clean white porcelain bodies, then covered with transparent glaze and fired at high temperatures. Its characteristics include bright blue colors, vivid patterns, and elegant style. Blue-and-white porcelain is deeply loved in China and was exported overseas through the Silk Road and maritime trade, becoming an iconic symbol of Chinese civilization.

Craftsmanship Process

Jingdezhen ceramics production includes dozens of processes: clay preparation, throwing, trimming, painting, glazing, and firing. Each process requires exquisite skills and rich experience from the craftsmen. Among them, ceramic painting is particularly demanding, with artisans using profound painting and calligraphy skills to draw exquisite patterns on porcelain bodies stroke by stroke. Traditional wood-firing is a test of craftsmen's precise control over fire temperature.

Contemporary Inheritance and Development

Today, Jingdezhen is not only a traditional ceramic production base but also an important center for ceramic art creation and exchange. The annual International Ceramic Expo attracts ceramic artists and collectors from around the world. The Ancient Kiln Folk Custom Expo Area has preserved traditional porcelain-making techniques, allowing visitors to experience the joy of ceramic making firsthand.
