The Thousand Character Classic (Qian Zi Wen) is one of China's most famous literacy primers. Together with the Three Character Classic and the Hundred Family Surnames, it forms the Three Hundred Thousand collection of traditional educational texts. It consists of exactly 1,000 non-repeating Chinese characters arranged in four-character verses, totaling 250 lines.

According to legend, Emperor Wu of Liang (Xiao Yan) wanted to teach his princes to read and ordered a thousand unique characters to be selected from the calligraphy of Wang Xizhi. He then commissioned Zhou Xingsi to compile them into a text. Zhou completed the work in a single night, and his hair turned white from the effort. The emperor was highly impressed.
