Su Shi (1037-1101), also known as Su Dongpo, was one of the greatest literary figures of China's Song Dynasty, excelling in poetry, prose, and calligraphy.
Overview
Su Shi (1037-1101), courtesy name Zizhan, pen name Dongpo Jushi (Layman of the Eastern Slope), was from Meishan, Sichuan. He is one of the greatest literary figures of the Song Dynasty and one of the Eight Great Masters of the Tang and Song.
Life
Su Shi passed the imperial examination in 1057. His political career was marked by repeated demotions due to his opposition to Wang Anshi's reforms. In 1079 he was arrested and exiled to Huangzhou, where he produced his most famous works including Remembering the Past at Red Cliff.

Legacy
Su Shi is a rare all-around literary genius in Chinese history. His bold, free style of ci poetry pioneered a new approach in Song Dynasty poetry. He was also a renowned calligrapher and painter. The famous dish Dongpo Pork is named after him.
