Joy of Life Season 2 (Chinese: 庆余年第二季) is a 2024 Chinese historical drama and the sequel to the hit series Joy of Life, adapted from Mao Ni's bestselling novel. Directed by Sun Hao and Wen Ruohan, starring Zhang Ruoyun, Li Qin, Chen Daoming, and Wu Gang. The 36-episode series aired on Tencent Video and CCTV-8 beginning May 16, 2024.
Season 1 scored 7.9 on Douban with over one million ratings, making it one of the most successful web novel adaptations ever. Season 2 holds a 7.3 rating — slightly lower at launch but gradually improving as the story progressed — and was the most-watched Chinese drama of early 2024.
Plot Summary
Picking up where Season 1 ended, Fan Xian (Zhang Ruoyun) leads a diplomatic mission back to the capital, only to be threatened by the Second Prince, who holds Fan's loved ones hostage to force his submission.
Back in the capital, the political landscape has shifted dramatically. Emperor Qing (Chen Daoming) has laid traps within traps, and spymaster Chen Pingping (Wu Gang) operates in shadows that no one can penetrate. The rivalry between the Second Prince and the Crown Prince intensifies, and Fan Xian finds himself in an even more dangerous power struggle.
