Plot Synopsis
Fugui is initially a wealthy landlord's son, a gambler who squanders his family's fortune and indirectly causes his father's death. After his family's downfall, he reforms and earns a living with his wife Jiazhen by performing shadow puppet shows.
Over the ensuing decades, Fugui's family endures the Chinese Civil War, the Great Leap Forward, the Cultural Revolution, and other historical upheavals. His son Youqing dies from excessive blood donation, and his daughter Fengxia dies in childbirth. Fugui watches those around him depart one by one, yet he continues to live with resilience.
The film ends with an elderly Fugui in the company of his old ox, illustrating the profound meaning of "living" — the act of living itself is a form of strength.
