Department Honors
The Department of Interdisciplinary Learning and Teaching awards Department Honors to certain outstanding students and provides the opportunity for advanced study under close faculty supervision.
Selection for honors designation is based on the student’s academic performance and recommendation by the faculty of the student’s major discipline. To be eligible for the program, students must have a minimum overall grade point average of 3.0 at UTSA and a minimum grade point average of 3.5 in their major at UTSA. The minimum grade point averages must be maintained for students to receive the approval of the Department Honors Committee and the discipline faculty. Students applying for Department Honors are expected to enroll in the appropriate honors thesis course during their final two semesters. The completed thesis must be approved by the supervising faculty sponsor and another departmental faculty member. Students interested in this program should contact their professors for additional information.
Department Information
As of Spring 2026, the B.A. in Equity and Education has been renamed to the B.A. in Education. For continuity and compliance reasons, this change is not reflected on the Degrees without Certification and Degrees with Certification tabs of this page.
The Department of Interdisciplinary Learning and Teaching offers the following degrees and certifications:
1. Bachelor of Arts Degree in Education
a. Degree-Only Concentration
The Bachelor of Arts (B.A.) in Education (EED) degree-only concentration may be used as preparation for a number of career paths; for example, government, service industry, and non-profit work. This degree also has an associated opportunity for graduate or professional study in areas such as educational psychology, public policy, business, counseling, curriculum and instruction, or social work. The minimum number of semester credit hours required for the B.A. in EED degree-only concentration, including the Core Curriculum requirements, is 120, at least 39 of which must be at the upper-division level. See the section entitled “Bachelor of Arts Degree in Education (degree-only concentration)” for a listing of the requirements for this degree.
b. Degrees with Certifications
The Bachelor of Arts (B.A.) degree in Education (EED) is grounded in the College of Education and Human Development’s Conceptual Framework of culturally efficacious agents of change who are knowledgeable, community-based, and professional. This program’s curriculum is based on enduring understandings that highlight the important ideas and core processes that are central to an equitable education for all children and have lasting value beyond the university classroom. These enduring understandings encompass issues of cultural efficacy, literacy, language, classroom environments, planning, instruction, and professional responsibility.
The program is 120-122 hours based on the concentration and will accept 60-63 hours of transfer credit hours with approval. Majors in the B.A. in EED degree will be able to choose from the following certification options upon admittance to the certification program:
i.

Secondary Certification Programs & All-Level Specialized Certification Programs
Students seeking certification to teach at the secondary level (grades 7–12) or in an all-level (early childhood – grade 12) specialized field such as Physical Education, Spanish, Music, or Fine Arts, must obtain a bachelor’s degree in the academic area in which they plan to teach. These students should consult with their advisor in the department in which their degree is housed.
Please note that requirements for degrees and certification have been carefully coordinated between the content area departments and the Department of Interdisciplinary Learning and Teaching; however, there may be specific degree requirements that are not required in the certification program and specific certification requirements that may not be required in the degree program.
Certification program requirements are dictated by the Texas Education Agency and the Texas State Board of Educator Certification.
Teacher candidates are encouraged to meet with their certification and disciplinary advisors often to ensure they are abreast of the most recent requirements.

Minor in Secondary Education
is fully inclusive of the Secondary Certification Sequence of Coursework. Secondary certification includes Certification Requirements, Professional Education Coursework, and the Yearlong Clinical Teaching Residency Model and is completed in 32 credit hours. Students enrolled in UTeachSA will also qualify for the Minor in Secondary Education.
The Secondary Certification Sequence of Courses/Minor in Secondary Education is meant to be completed during the last 4 semesters of the Teacher Candidate’s degree plan. The first two semesters are considered the pre-clinical year (junior year), and the previous two semesters are considered the clinical year (senior year). The UTSA Educator Preparation Program is a TEA-approved and vetted residency program meaning that the clinical teaching experience and the last year of pedagogical coursework are completed concurrently over the course of the clinical year. Students are encouraged to meet with a certification advisor as soon as they decide to pursue teacher certification to prepare their program of study.
Students are encouraged to consult with their content area advisor as well as their certification advisors about the specific requirements for each subject area. Some content area degrees include the Secondary Teacher Certification Sequence/Minor in Secondary Education as part of their teacher certification focused Degree Concentrations. Please note that a content degree concentration may include coursework in the college of education beyond the Secondary Sequence to fulfill the concentration area. In some instances, a content area degree plan may choose not to adopt the full sequence of courses below because the degree may already contain content that would be duplicated in the certification sequence. Students are, again, highly encouraged to meet with certification and content advisors early and often.

Some pathways are still in the process of changing, so it is important to meet with a certification advisor early and often to stay abreast of the latest developments and programs of study.
Core Curriculum Requirements:
Students should refer to the appropriate section of this catalog for a listing of Core Curriculum requirements for the degree they are seeking. Additionally, students must seek advising from a certification advisor toward the end of their sophomore year or as the approach being core complete to understand the certification requirements and admissions process for the Educator Preparation Program (EPP). Those who transfer to UTSA with an Associate of Arts in Teaching or similar degree must meet with the certification program advisors upon enrolling at UTSA to ensure timely completion of requirements for certification.

Certificate in Early Childhood Education
The undergraduate Early Childhood Education (ECE) Certificate’s curriculum is based on five premises that will help early childhood educators develop an in-depth knowledge of cognitive, linguistic, physical, and socio-emotional development, as well as appropriate teaching and learning practices. It enables undergraduates from across the university to pursue a coursework program that concentrates on the early learning experiences of very young children (birth to age 8) of diverse cultural and linguistic backgrounds and examines the following: 1) developmentally appropriate practices; 2) collaboration with diverse families; 3) play and learning; 4) early language and literacy development; and 5) advocacy in early childhood settings. The curriculum for this certificate aligns with the National Association for the Education of Young Children (NAEYC) Standards for Early Childhood Professional Preparation. Students pursuing the ECE Certificate must complete 15 semester credit hours in Early Childhood courses.
Admission Requirements
An undergraduate student wishing to enroll in the Early Childhood Education certificate program should contact the Certificate Program Advisor and request permission to enter the program. Approval to enter the program by the Certificate Program Advisor and the Dean of the College of Education and Human Development is required.
Certificate Requirements
The ECE certificate comprises five undergraduate courses for a total of 15 semester credit hours. Three of these courses are currently offered in our undergraduate EC-6
th
grade certification program in the Department of Interdisciplinary Learning and Teaching and constitute the core of the early childhood coursework. The two additional courses allow prospective students the opportunity to learn about special populations, namely dual language learners and children with special needs. This certificate will serve to increase the knowledge base of individuals seeking roles in the early childhood profession, particularly in diverse learning spaces.

Curriculum and Instruction (CI) Courses
CI 3663. Interdisciplinary Project Based Learning. (3-0) 3 Credit Hours.
In this course, students will learn about interdisciplinary project-based learning through first-hand experience. Project-based learning is a student-driven teaching approach in which the learners identify and analyze a critical issue or problem, then work over a period of time to develop a possible solution, which is then shared with a public audience. The course will focus on both project-based teaching and learning approaches for all learners and across content areas. Generally Offered: Spring. Course Fee: LRH1 $20.54; STSH $30.81.

. This course is a professional learning community (PLC). The PLC serves as a touchstone in the secondary teacher certification program, bringing together preclinical and clinical teacher candidates within disciplinary areas to share and co-construct knowledge and skills applied to their field-based classroom experiences. By working in small groups of colleagues and peers, learning is emergent, responsive, and collaborative. Although the PLC is facilitated by faculty members with expertise in the specialty area, it is a vehicle for horizontal expertise where students and faculty alike share their expertise and insights. In this way, the PLC is a community of practice where teacher candidates come together to (a) share learning from various school- and community-based experiences and (b) synthesize learning through reflection and discussion on teaching and being a teacher. Multiple discipline-based sections will be offered each semester, and all preclinical and clinical teachers in a discipline will enroll in the same section throughout their program. Teacher candidates must pass the course with a CR to qualify for clinical teaching. This course will not be offered in the Summer. (Formerly CI 4801, credit cannot be earned for both CI 4801 and
