Experience:
Alicia Andre has been teaching English, Reading, and English to Speakers of Other Languages for more than 23 years at the Community Colleges in Minnesota. She has been teaching full-time in Century’s ESOL Department for the past five years. Before coming to Century College, she taught at Minneapolis Community College (MCTC) for 18 years. She teaches all courses: reading, writing, listening and speaking, and pronunciation.
Teaching Approach:
For me, teaching involves a collaboration between the teacher and students. I believe that teachers are responsible for planning interesting and engaging content that keeps students informed and challenged. I like to give students a lot of independence and try to encourage them to actively participate in class. I think of myself more as a coach. I believe that my job as an instructor is to provide the following: an environment that is conducive to learning; knowledge that will help students be successful in achieving their academic goals; materials, opportunities, and feedback that will motivate students to learn, and help them to be successful in their studies and professional life.
Education:
A B.S. degree from the University of Minnesota in Technical Communications (1998), and an M.A. degree from San Francisco State University in English and English to Speakers of Other Languages.
Notable:
Alicia has acted as department chair at Minneapolis Community and Technical College. She has received two Teaching Excellence awards in the development of hybrid courses in listening, speaking and pronunciation. She assisted in the development of a college.
Hobbies:
Tennis, movies, travel, and baking bread.

Teaching Approach:
Teaching provides me much opportunity for continual learning and growth and allows me the possibility to pass these opportunities on to my students. I am grateful to provide opportunity to my students and love to do so in the following manner:Opportunity to: foster critical thinking; educate students on what it means to be an educated person in the allied health field; share my desire as an educator to assist students to reach their fullest potential by providing a stellar education in the psychomotor, cognitive and affective domains; be a guide for the student providing them with the tools on how to make their own discoveries; teach them how to get excited about what they can accomplish; absorb the diversity and uniqueness of each individual student and teach them how they can learn so much from each other and their individual experiences; follow CAAHEP curriculum, yet making it unique and exciting for the students; leave the students at the end of the class wanting more, and anticipation for the next time we meet.
Education:
Diploma in Medical Assisting and certification through the AAMA; Bachelor’s degree in Psychology and a Master’s Degree in Community Psychology; Metropolitan State University, TES (Teacher Education Series) courses in spring 2005 at the University of Minnesota (coursework included Introduction to Vocational Teaching, Course Development, Instructional Methods, Philosophy and Student Training and Assessment).

Dr. Breyer-Peterson has a true passion for teaching psychology and educating people about mental health. She has been a full-time faculty member at Century College since 2011 and currently teaches Psychological Disorders, Introduction to Mental and Behavioral Health Work, Internship in Psychology, and Developmental Psychology: Lifespan. She coordinates the Mental and Behavioral Health Worker program and psychology internship, as well as directing Century’s Mental Health First Aid grant project, which provides free mental health training to students and employees. Dr. Breyer-Peterson is also a Licensed Psychologist, and has provided psychotherapy in a variety of settings, including community mental health centers, hospitals, and the VA system, which helps inform her teaching. She is an international speaker on psychology and mental health and has published several research articles in peer-reviewed journals, which have been cited over 200 times.
Teaching Approach:
“I truly love teaching and helping all of my students succeed! I believe that we learn best when we are actually ‘doing something’ with the material, so in my classes, you will have frequent opportunities to engage in active and experiential learning and learn from one another. Since there often isn’t a ‘right’ answer in psychology, I also encourage students to think critically and scientifically as you learn new information. How does the information fit with your beliefs and experiences? Finally, I believe we can use what we learn in psychology to improve the lives of ourselves and others, so we often apply the information to real life so you can use what you learn immediately! I truly care about each of you, and strive to create an environment in my face-to-face and online courses where students feel they are understood, respected, and are comfortable seeking help. I am here to support you, encourage you, and help you succeed! Therefore, I frequently provide students with resources like a notes packet, study guide, and study tips to help you grow and develop as students. I love being a part of your academic journey and hope to see you in one of my classes!”

Jill Cadwell has been teaching college-level English courses for over 20 years, and has been teaching at Century since 2002. She also consistently participates in administrative work on campus, whether as English Department Chair, MSCF Union Local Executive Committee Officer, or working on other initiatives important to Century College’s mission and for the benefit of students. As time permits, Jill likes to write nonfiction personal essays and read literature about the environment. She is an advocate for understanding and slowing climate change.
Teaching Approach:
I see each student as an individual, and I’m excited about what strengths he/she/ze already brings to their writing. I have the expertise and experience to diagnose weak spots and work kindly with students to improve those areas. I really like working with people on their writing and thinking! I follow a simple personal mission in my work: Today is my opportunity to… be kind; focus on what really matters; ask thoughtful questions and listen carefully; help someone learn; uphold high standards, compassionately; and do a good job.

Charlie Castro has dedicated her entire career to education, encompassing volunteer work, corporate roles, and formal teaching positions. Her passion lies in exploring how the art of rhetoric can shape historical outcomes and shape narratives for the future. For over a decade, she has primarily concentrated on instructing courses in Public Speaking and Interpersonal Communication. In addition, Charlie has shared her expertise through adult education workshops in the Metro Area.
Teaching Approach:
I hold the belief that students achieve optimal learning outcomes through experimentation and by establishing secure environments within the classroom where they can explore areas outside their comfort zones and engage in challenging discussions. It is my conviction that students thrive when they can extend classroom discussions and concepts into their daily lives, fostering ongoing conversations with friends and family. I also maintain the perspective that each of my students, regardless of the classroom format (whether hybrid, asynchronous, or otherwise), brings a rich array of experiences that consistently enriches my own learning each time we convene. Teaching is a captivating dynamic that continually ignites my creativity.

I believe every student benefits from exposure to a broad range of ideas–in terms of subject matter as well as viewpoints. He currently works full-time for the Office of Inspector General at the Minnesota Department of Human Services, as a supervisor in their investigations unit. Prior to this he worked for many years for private providers providing and directing a variety of human services.
Teaching Approach:
I prefer to teach in an environment that is highly collaborative and interactive. While lecturing is an important part of teaching in the human services field, storytelling and student led engagement can invoke thoughtful learning experiences as well. Students can expect to learn from each other as well as me as their instructor throughout the course. This angle can really bring diversity and inclusion to the forefront of conversation, where it ought to be.

Teaching Approach:
The unique aspect of my approach to teaching lies in my ability to seamlessly integrate real-world experiences and practical applications into the classroom environment. Rather than solely relying on theoretical concepts, I emphasize hands-on learning and experiential activities to engage students and reinforce their understanding. I recognize that students grasp concepts more effectively when they can see the direct relevance to their future careers. Therefore, I draw upon my extensive industry experiences in heating and air conditioning (HVAC) and welding to craft dynamic lessons that bridge the gap between theory and practice. By sharing anecdotes, case studies, and examples from my own professional journey, I bring the subject matter to life and inspire students to envision themselves succeeding in the field. Furthermore, my teaching philosophy prioritizes a student-centered approach, where I serve as a facilitator of learning rather than a mere dispenser of information. I encourage active participation, critical thinking, and collaboration among students, encouraging a supportive learning community where everyone feels valued and empowered to contribute. My dedication to mentorship goes beyond the classroom walls, as I provide guidance and support to students outside of scheduled class times. Whether it’s offering extra help during office hours, providing career advice, or connecting students with industry professionals for networking opportunities, I strive to support the holistic development of each individual. Experience:
Tim Grebner has over 30 years of college teaching experience in mechanical and electrical engineering. His industry work experience has included working at a small solar energy firm to designing electro-mechanical machines at 3M.
Teaching Approach:
I believe teaching and learning should be participatory because students learn best when they are active learners. In addition to classroom problem solving, I incorporate team based projects where students may design, fabricate, test, document, and communicate their work. Finally, I believe that developing good habits in students is very important - habits such as being conscientious, timely, organized, inquisitive, and tenacious. My hope is that students utilize the environment I foster to become better problem solvers, more responsible learners, and acquire skills and habits that will be useful in their careers so they are empowered to make a positive impact on society.
Education:
Masters Degree, Engineering, University of Minnesota.
Hobbies:
Bicycle Touring, Cross Country Skiing, Canoeing, Playing in the Fab Lab, Electronics

Experience:
Dr. Gryczman, born and raised in Poland, has 21 years of teaching experience and 27 years of experience as a nurse in variety of nursing settings & specialties such as: geriatrics, adult med-surg, telemetry, adult orthopedics, neurology, rehabilitation, epilepsy, oncology, behavioral health (adolescence, adult and geriatric), pediatric neurology, pediatric med-surg, orthopedics and pediatric med-trauma. Dr. Gryczman is board certified as an advanced holistic nurse, nurse educator, and public health nurse. She works at the point-of-care at Gillette Children’s Specialty Healthcare to stay current in clinical practice. Her special interests include clinical nutrition, holistic health and healing, nursing simulation and genetics.
Teaching Approach:
I like to help shape students’ lives, teaching them safe nursing practice that is based on evidence and delivered in a holistic manner. I like to role-model and teach them what holistic nursing is all about, how practice based on best evidence can change clients’ outcomes; how our being with another offers hope and gives new meaning to all that is lost and seems unbearable. I believe that by teaching nursing I can reach more patients and have a more tangible presence in the community. I am a strong patient advocate, student advocate, and a leader in the nursing profession. Currently, I teach clinical simulation and nursing lab. I believe that clear expectations and well organized course, with clearly stated objectives, are essential to students’ success. I combine structure and intentionality with flexibility in both planning and leading the class. I am clear about the course objectives but remain flexible and open to various ways of achieving them. My aim is to have students achieve the level of confidence and competence to engage in safe nursing practice. I teach students what critical thinking is all about and how to apply it to arrive at sound clinical judgment when making clinical decisions. As a holistic nurse educator I believe that safe learning environment, respect, and unconditional acceptance of all students are as fundamental to good teaching as knowing your subject, and knowing yourself. I feel privileged to teach at Century College.
Education:
Doctor of Nursing Practice from Metropolitan State University; Master’s Degree in Nursing from University of Minnesota; Baccalaureate Degree in Nursing from Metropolitan State University
Notable:

Experience:
I teach courses in child development, adolescent development, adulthood, aging and death, lifespan psychology, general psychology, social psychology, sensation and perception and statistics. My areas of specialty are children’s cognitive development and early childhood education. In addition to teaching college courses, I provide workshops on child and adolescent development to children, parents and educators. While these workshops span many topics, I have a particular love of teaching children and adolescents about how their brains work so that they can better understand their minds and bodies.
Teaching Approach:
I employ an asset-based pedagogical model in my classroom instruction and curriculum. This method involves spending the first week of class getting to know every students’ personal interest in the course, and adapting the curriculum to both reflect those interests, and to incorporate any relevant expertise individual students can bring to the course. A related goal of mine as an instructor is to help students make connections between course content and real life. To do so, I use a variety of in-class activities to both assist students in learning the material, and prompt the understanding that what they’re learning in the classroom has important real-world applications. I love teaching and I hope my students also love coming to class.

He is currently pursuing a certificate in documentary studies at the Center for Documentary Studies at Duke University in Durham, NC. Robert has also taught storytelling, creative writing and podcasting workshops across the Twin Cities metro area.
Teaching Approach:
I believe that Communication Studies is a field of praxis - with roots in the Humanities and the Social Sciences - and that all students benefit from an understanding of theory as well as how these theories actually function in our personal and professional lives. That means that I’m always learning as I teach, and that my students are often teaching me (and others) as they learn. I believe in support, guidance, mentoring and potentially-transformative active learning experiences.

After earning her teaching degree and license, Mandy worked in the K-12 system as an Art Teacher from 2010-2022. She has taught in Winona, Rochester, Edina, Bloomington, Anoka, Minnetonka, St. Paul, Minneapolis, St. Michael, and Champlin in this time, and has worked in elementary, middle, and high schools. Mandy began working at Century College in the fall of 2022 as a Lab Assistant for the art department.
Teaching Approach:
I believe all humans have creativity inside of them, it just presents in varying degrees. Being creative is an ability or skill that can be nurtured and learned, as well as neglected or lost, and my approach to teaching is to place value on real world and every day skills. Artistic things are cathartic to teach and learn, but in the end, we’re all just people who need to be able to clean up our messes and work/interact respectfully with one another.

Experience:
Dr. McWhorter has over 15 years of experience teaching composition and literature at both community college and university levels. She designs courses that blend critical analysis, creativity, and civic engagement – from surveys in African American literatures to speculative genres like Gothic, Horror, and Sci-Fi/Fantasy. A Quality Matters-certified distance learning instructor, she brings curiosity, play, and meaningful dialogue into her classrooms. She has chaired statewide taskforces, led curricular innovation in co-requisite composition courses, and contributed to diversity and inclusion initiatives. Passionate about stories often left at the margins, she encourages students to see literature as a conversation, fostering empathy, critical thinking, and the joy of discovery.
Teaching Approach:
“I approach teaching as a collaborative exploration where students and I learn alongside one another. My courses invite curiosity and conversation by blending critical analysis with creativity and play. I encourage students to see English not just as an academic subject, but as a living dialogue connected to their own questions, stories, and sense of possibility.”
Education:
BA in English from Samford University; MA in Women’s Studies from the University of Alabama; MA in English from the University of Minnesota; PhD in English from the University of Minnesota

Dr. Olson has worked as an educator since she was a teenager - first discovering her love for teaching as a ski instructor at Hyland Hills in Bloomington, MN. As a self-described “optimistic extrovert,” she has blended her love of communication with her talents in the classroom to help students build strong skills in relationships, find confidence in front of an audience, and advocate for their needs and interests in a variety of settings.
Teaching Approach:
I know that students learn best when they are able to engage with course concepts in ways that match their learning style, and are presented with reasonable challenges and the tools, skills, and support to succeed. I teach with compassion, flexibility, and a positive attitude to help all students build strong communication skills and move forward with their educational goals.

Experience:
Dr Pfeiffer has been teaching chemistry since 1996. She taught 3 years at the University of Wyoming, 5 years at Hamline University, and has been at Century College since Fall 2004. In addition to teaching, she is Century’s site coordinator for the North Star STEM Alliance, funded by the National Science Foundation and 3M. The goal of this program is to increase underrepresented student success in obtaining bachelor degrees by providing them with professional development opportunities, introducing them to research and career opportunities in STEM, and helping them transfer to a four-year school. Dr Pfeiffer has also been active in the MN Section of the American Chemical Society since 1999, serving in many roles, such as Chair, Secretary, External Communications Committee Chair, and National Chemistry Week Coordinator.
Teaching Approach:
I believe students should actively learn during class time. About half the classes consist of my short lectures, followed by problems the students work out individually or in groups. The other half of the classes students work in small groups, where they are presented with data or information to interpret, then are asked questions designed to guide them toward formulation of their own valid conclusions. Through this method, students construct their own understanding of the material while developing skills such as information processing, communication, critical reading and thinking, and problem solving.

Experience:
As a facilitator of writing classes, Glenda Reed draws on twenty years of consistent creative practice in the visual and literary arts to share the most important lesson any creator can learn: persist. In addition to teaching at Century College, Glenda Reed teaches writing classes with Minnesota State University, Mankato, Scholars Serving Time at Shakopee Correctional Facility, The Loft Literary Center, and COMPAS. Reed has served as managing editor of the Blue Earth Review, as a mentor with the Minnesota Prison Writing Workshop, and now mentors beginning writers privately.
Teaching Approach:
“I’m inspired by the ethos of Liz Lerman’s Critical Response Process (CRP): ‘leave the maker eager and motivated to get back to work.’ I encourage writers to make their own work and to know what that means. Together, we explore subjects and experiences that we can hold softly or at least spaciously: How did you or your character feel about the experience at the time? Who or what supported you or your character during this time? What were the sources of joy?”
Education:
2023 | Minnesota State University, Mankato | Master of Fine Arts (MFA) in Creative Nonfiction • Three-year intensive study of writing craft and pedagogy, including fiction, creative nonfiction, poetry, first-year writing, and anti-racist pedagogy. 2015-2016 | The Loft Literary Center Mentor Series Fellow • Selective cohort mentored by six nationally acclaimed writers of prose and poetry. 2007 | Beloit College | Bachelor of Arts (BA) | Studio Art, Summa Cum Laude • Presidential Scholarship (four-year, merit-based scholarship).
Notable:
2024 Minnesota State Arts Board Creative Individuals Award ($10,000); 2023 Minnesota Regional Arts Council Next Step Grant ($5,000 award); 2022 Minnesota State University, Mankato Creative Fellowship ($2,000 award); 2019 Minnesota State Arts Board Artist Initiative Grant ($10,000 award); 2019 Jerome Foundation Artist Travel Grant ($5,000 award); 2018 Partnership Art Grant, ArtPlace America ($50,000 award); 2017 Creative Placemaking Award, Springboard for the Arts ($1,500 award); 2016 Minnesota State Arts Board Artist Initiative Grant ($10,000 award); 2015 Barbara Deming Memorial Fund Grant ($1,000 award); 2015 Minnesota Regional Arts Council Next Step Grant ($4,000 award); 2015 Loft Literary Creative Writing Mentorship Award ($1,000 award)

Notable:
“I care. I teach because it is my passion. I love to learn and this is truly unlocked in the classroom by valuing everything a student brings to the class. Everyone in the class has their unique path and experience and I want to honor that while helping them get to the next step in their academic and professional journey. I enjoy the learning process and informing students what goes on “behind the curtains” of a teacher, department and institution. Finally, helping students to learn how to read the world and themselves is a point of emphasis in my composition courses as each student embarks on an identity exploration project. I have much hope for the future as I get to know the complexities of our student body and the impact they want to make on this world.”

Caroline has taught art and photography year-round at several post-secondary institutions for the past 14 years. She has taught at the Art Institutes International Minnesota, Century Community and Technical College, the Minneapolis College of Art and Design Continuing Education Department, North Hennepin Community College, and the University of Minnesota. She started her career on the cusp of the digital revolution so is well versed in both digital and analogue photography techniques as well as has been teaching online since before the pandemic. Recently she has been teaching digital photography using Adobe programs, focusing on specialized skills in digital editing and printing techniques. Beyond the technical she teaches conceptual thought, with students completing portfolios with an understanding of their work in greater cultural contexts. Her expertise has come from developing many classes from scratch, as well as making adjustments to institutional changes such as a new curriculum and short-notice class changes.
Teaching Approach:
My goal, when teaching, is to foster critical thinking and problem solving, as well as to help students develop their own style and ideas. My assignments consist of both technical and conceptual challenges so the students do more than just follow directions. Critical thinking is imperative, and these assignments help them to develop such skills. I recognize that each student inherently learns in different ways and address each learning style through a variety of teaching techniques. I also take into account the class dynamic as I alter my lectures according to the interests and needs of each class. Another high priority is to encourage new ways to solve problems and take risks in their work. Taking risks often brings out the most unique ideas. My students leave the class having confidence in their technical skills and experience trying new approaches, not being afraid to take risks in their endeavors.

Experience:
Kristine views teaching as a privilege and truly loves being in the classroom! She has been working with community college students for the past 20 years with experience in teaching, counseling, advising, career services, and student life. She currently teaches courses in psychology, student success, and career development.
Teaching Approach:
In all of the classes I teach, I focus most on student well-being which seems to come naturally from my theoretical base in counseling psychology and the many years I have spent counseling community college students. Creating a positive learning environment for all students to feel safe, grow, and enjoy their learning process is the foundation of my teaching. I consciously work to create this environment by building relationships, connecting course content to students’ daily lives, and actively engaging every student, every class.
Education:
BA, Psychology, University of Minnesota-Duluth; MS, Counseling Psychology, Capella University

Experience:
Valerie Wilwert has taught courses in General Psychology, Research Methods (advanced and beginning level), Social Psychology, and Health Psychology. Her prior teaching experience involves a variety of different age groups and locations (with some of the highlights including teaching high school level Advanced Placement Psychology, and teaching English in China!). Valerie’s specific areas of research interest include generational culture, and understanding how people might see the world differently just because of the time period in which they were born! In addition to many years of teaching, Valerie also has experience managing a psychological research lab, in which a large amount of time was spent mentoring individual students as they developed their own research projects.
Teaching Approach:
Psychology is the scientific study of human behavior, so what better way to understand these key theories than to learn how they apply to real life! I love to use interesting stories to illustrate key course concepts, and invite my students to participate in a lot of hands-on demonstrations in order to help make sense of the more challenging course concepts. We can learn so much about psychology, just from looking around us and identifying its everyday applications. In my undergraduate years, I have to admit that I used to be a bit intimidated by scientific research. Through practice (and a few really bad studies early on), I began to love it, and I enjoy helping my students to help them the think about the world scientifically. I think that’s a skill that helps us every day!
Education:
B.S. Secondary Social Studies Education, Bemidji State University; B.S. Psychology, Bemidji State University; M.A. Psychology, Metropolitan State University
Hobbies:
Hanging out with family, running and fitness activities, traveling, outdoor concerts, and reading

Experience:
Ruth Wollersheim teaches Humanities, Film Studies, and Gender Studies, and is the current Gender Studies Program Director at Century College. She received a Ph.D. from the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee in an interdisciplinary program called Modern Studies where her areas of concentration were feminist film and media studies, feminist theory, and cultural studies. Her dissertation examined the popularity of the desperate housewife character in innumerable films, television shows, and cooking blogs. Ruth has been teaching at Century for over 10 years.
Teaching Approach:
Ruth’s philosophy for teaching and learning comes from her strong commitment to social justice and equity as well as her background in interdisciplinary teaching and learning in the broader humanities, such as in film and critical media studies, gender studies, and English literature and composition. In other words, she believes in the transformative power of storytelling across disciplines, identities, and cultures. She also considers teaching and learning a matter of continual trial and error. Ruth loves the energy of the classroom and is always concerned when you are not there. Additionally, she really, really, really wants you to succeed and find strength in your journey and your unique identity.
Education:
PhD, Modern Studies, (focused on culture, media, and theory); Women’s Studies Graduate Certificate
Hobbies:
Her other passions include craft beer, saunas, lake swimming, canoes, Bernese Mountain Dogs, vintage dresses, and human rights.
