Matthew uses the phrase the days of king Herod, ημεραις ηρωδου του βασιλεως. Caius Julius Caesar Octavianus AUGUSTUS reigned from 27 BC until 14 AD. King Herod had been appointed king in 37BC. He 4 would rule until 4BC when he would be succeeded by Archelaus Herod (4BC -6AD) as Ethnarch of Judaea and Samaria and Antipas Herod as Tetrarch of Galilee and Herod Philip as Tetrarch of Batanea (east of Galilee, north east of the Decapolis. In 28BC there was a Jubilee year. The Jubilees previous to this were 77 BC and 126BC and 175 BC. The Jubilee years following were 21 AD and 70 AD. In 27 BC Caeser Augustus acceded to the throne of Rome. Matthew wants us to know when Yeshua was born and where Yeshua was born. We will look first at the plot and then return to the identification of the day pinpointed by Matthew Levi. 6, The Birth of Jesus and the Stars Mat 2:1  Now when Jesus was born in Bethlehem of Judaea in the days of Herod the king, behold, there came wise men from the east to Jerusalem,  Mat 2:2  Saying, Where is he that is born King of the Jews? for we have seen his star in the east, and are come to worship him.  Mat 2:1  του δε ιησου γεννηθεντος εν βηθλεεμ της ιουδαιας εν ημεραις ηρωδου του βασιλεως ιδου μαγοι απο ανατολων παρεγενοντο εις ιεροσολυμα  Mat 2:2  λεγοντες που εστιν ο τεχθεις βασιλευς των ιουδαιων ειδομεν γαρ αυτου τον αστερα εν τη ανατολη και ηλθομεν προσκυνησαι αυτω  The Peshitta text of the New Testament: Matthew 2:1 kad dein itiled yeshua beveit lehem daihuda. This is chapter 1. Chapter 2 then was happening whilst the birth event was happening. Whilst Jesus was being born in Bethlehem, Astrologers or Magi in the East were studying the night skies. They noticed that according to their interpretation of the meaning of various stars a king was to be born. Their records told them that the king would be born in Bethlehem and he would be the king of the Judaeans. They considered the event important enough to make a pilgrimage from the east to Bethlehem to find the king. They arrived in Jerusalem and caused quite a stir. They asked the question: “Where is he that is born King of the Judeans? For we have seen his star in its rising and are come to worship him? Herod the Idumaean who ruled at the behest of Caesar Augustus, was not aware of the birth of any king. He gathered the chief priests, and the scribes and demanded to know where the Messiah was to be born. 1 [ CITATION Peh86 \l 1033 ] The transliteration is my own and not a scientific one. 2 [ CITATION Sal91 \l 1033 ] 6 They investigated and concluded it was Bethlehem. He then spoke privately with the Magi and found out exactly when the star had appeared. The Magi went to Bethlehem and found Mary and Jesus and worshipped. They then received a dream telling them not to go back to Herod. They then left back to the East without passing Jerusalem. Joseph then receives a dream warning him to take the child to Egypt for Herod would seek to destroy the child. Thus, a dream saved the family from the attack of Herod. 8, Characters The main characters in chapter 2 are the Magi who know how to understand the heavens and how to listen to dreams. Then there is king Herod who is an Idumaean. Then there are the chief priests and scribes who are from the tribe of Levite and Judaea. The Lord Jesus is in the background of the whole story. 9, The Magi and their Message Luz suggests there are three main ways the story of the Magi and the star have been approached. 1. The phenomena was a supernova. 2. It was a comet, but the Halley’s comet usually referred to was from 12/11 BC, which is too early for this event. There was however a comet testified by astronomers from China dated to 5/4 BC3. 3. The third option is a conjunction of Jupiter and Saturn which occurred three times in 7/6 BC4. This last interpretation would appear to be the most likely since Jupiter was seen as the star of a king and Saturn was seen as the star of Shabbat and some considered the star of the Jews5. We may add a fourth suggestion. In light of the star appearing over William Branham at his birth and the star appearing over him in the waters of the Ohio river in 1933 on June the 11th, and the star appearing over his head in the public space of the San Houston Colosseum, Texas. In that debate Dr 3 [CITATION Mon60 \p 140-146 \l 1033 ] 4 [CITATION Luz89 \p 132 \l 1033 ] 5 Albius Tibullus 1.3.18; Tacitus Hist. 5.4; Frontinus, Strategemata 2.1.17; Dio Cocceianus 37.17f 7 West had debated F.F. Bosworth and the photo of the pillar of fire over Branham was taken. This could be seen as a sign of the presence of the angel. 10, The Claim of the Magi According to Matthew Levi the evangelist, the magushe/magoi from Anatole claimed: 1. There was a child born. 2. He was a king. 3. He was of the Judeans. 4. They came to know this from seeing a star in the sky at its rising (anatole)6. 5. The child was born somewhere in Judaea. 6. His birth was connected with the specific rising of a specific star which these Magi associated with Judaea. According to Matthew Levi these magushe looking at the stars and predicting the birth of a king of the Judeans were correct. 1 There was a child born. 2. He was a king. Here perhaps we can say that he was not necessarily the kind of king expected. He was not born into a family which was in power at the time. Indeed, the Magi may have expected that he would be a son of Herod the Idumaean but that was not the case. Herod knows nothing of the child’s birth until he was informed by the magushe. 3. He was of the Judeans. 4. Their method of discovering the child was accurate. 5, The child was born in Judaea. By combining the knowledge of the prophets among the chief priests and the scribes, and the knowledge of the stars among the magushe, were able to locate the child. Thus, Matthew the evangelist without making any judgement about the practice of the magushe records that they had indeed been correct in identifying the birth of the king of the Judaeans with a star they saw rising or they saw in the east. Matthew Levi does not say they were wrong to use this method to discover the king but that they were what we might call scientifically accurate in their findings. The question then arises for the observer is it possible to look at the stars in the sky and identify that someone has been born at a certain place and on a certain date. I think if we compare the case here with Jesus Christ with the modern phenomena surrounded the life of 6 Luz argues the two uses of the term Anatole, do not mean the same thing. The first Anatole means the east, the second Anatole means “rising”. This suggest Matthew is playing with words. 8 William Branham who like Jesus of Nazareth had an astonishing miracle ministry and was identified by someone who claimed to be a magos or a magushe or an astrologer. We find that it is entirely possible for the astrologers to do what they did. 11 The Birth of William Marrion Branham William Marrion Branham the son of Charles Branham and Ella (Harvey) Branham. He was born on April 6th, 1909 at 5 AM in the morning in Cumberland County Kentucky. Ella Harvey’s mother was Cherokee Indian, her father was Caucasian. The birth is described as follows “The eastern horizon was turning lighter with the approach of dawn, but the sun had not yet risen”7. Charles named him William Marrion Branham and said he would go by the name Billy. It was just after 5 O’clock Tuesday April 6th, 1909. The sun had not yet reached the top of the horizon but as Charles Branham opened the shutter light like a star, about a foot in diameter had shot through the open window8. The mother Ella screamed and the grandma, the neighbor woman and William’s Dad, Charles, stood against the wall. “The strange light circled the room several times, then stopped over the bed, hovering above the new mother and child, glowing yellowish green, pulsating with a life of its own9”. Twenty years later in 1929 William Branham met a lady on a bus. She was a daughter of a Baptist minister living in Chicago Illinois and she worked in the Whitehouse with Herbert Hoover. She was heavy set and described herself as a star gazer or an astrologer. It was November/ December 1929 and Branham was working for Public Service Indiana. He also got a part time job as a warden for the state of Indiana. This lady claimed to be working in the White House and to be just like the Magushe/Magi who had accurately understood where and 7 [CITATION Jor941 \p 15 \l 1033 ] 8 [CITATION Jor941 \p 16 \l 1033 ] 9 [CITATION Jor941 \p 16 \l 1033 ] 9 when Jesus was born. According to the testimony of William Branham this woman without having met him before or without knowing his name she was able to tell him exactly the day and hour in which he was born. Thus, she told him he was born at 5 AM in the morning on April 6th, 1909. Furthermore, the lady claimed that the way she knew this information was by seeing what she described as her way of calculating his birthday and birth hour. She claimed the way she knew his exact birth house was because she saw something, she called an “aura”. By seeing Billy’s aura, she was able to scientifically establish the exact hour and day of his birth. She said that by seeing his “aura” she could tell that he was born as a gift. She said the “aura” was the supernatural light of the soul. She explained that every human being has an aura and that each aura is a specific color. Each color had a meaning. If the color of the aura is gold, this meant a person was a gift. She explained to Billy that the color of his aura was gold. People with a golden aura are born at the conjunction of certain heavenly bodies. She told Branham that he had a golden aura and that is how she knew the exact day of his birth and that is how she knew that his destiny lay in the West and not where he was living at the time she met him in 1929. Branham challenged the lady to tell the birthdate of the sailor standing next to him in the bus. She claimed she could not do that 10. The lady illustrated her explanation with a mixture of biblical exegesis (what the Bible meant to the readers in the time it was written), eisegesis (reading her meaning into the text) and hermeneutics (application of the Bible message to her own time) . She explained Branham’s birth in terms of the birth of Jesus Christ. In doing so she made references to the birth of Christ in Matthew’s Gospel and in Catholic tradition around his birth. This is what I am calling in this paper the “astrologians” interpretation of the signs around Jesus birth. The term astrology if paralleled with Theology would mean the study of the stars. A scholar of the theology is called a theologian and therefore a scholar of the stars ought to be called an 10 [CITATION Jor941 \p 74/5 \l 1033 ] 10 “astrologian”. In her teaching to non-Christian Branham the lady used a series of questions combined with a series of explanations. Her questions to Branham were regarding his work, 1. Are you an officer? and his social wellbeing 2. “You’re lonesome, aren’t you?”, 3. Are you a Christian? 4. Did you know you were born under a sign? 5. “Did you know that the position of the stars affects events here on earth?”, in regard to this fifth question she raised the question of evidence. First, she told Branham to ask a sailor standing there in the bus if the moon controlled the tides. Then she followed up with another evidence that she was correct in saying the position of the stars affect events on earth. 6. “If I could tell you exactly when you were born would you believe me?” She then told him the exact day and hour of his birth. Here questions continued, 7. “You were born under a sign, haven’t ministers talked to you about this?”. The next question tied the interview with the birth of Jesus, 8. “Do you remember the story about how the wise men were led to the baby Jesus?” Branham denied knowing about religion, but the lady persisted 9. “But you have heard about the ‘wise men’ coming to visit baby Jesus, haven’t you?”. She continued 10. “Well what are the wise men?” Branham answered they were wisemen, but the lady said the wisemen were the same thing as her, “they were astrologers, star gazers”. With this last statement she went into what I will describe as an astrologian’s interpretation of the events around the birth of Christ, You know, before God does anything on earth He always declares it in the heavens first. That’s what he did when Jesus was born- three heavenly bodies lined up and formed a conjunction that caught the attention of some astrologers living in the East. One of them was from the lineage of Ham, another Shem, and the other, Japheth - the three sons of Noah. They represented all the people of the earth. Each of the three men traveled west separately, not knowing the other were coming until they met at Jerusalem. They went to Bethlehem and found the baby Jesus. They knew Jesus was the one they were looking for because of the color of his aura. 11 She followed up with a question regarding her explanation: 11. You know what an aura is don’t you? She then continued her discourse, It’s the supernatural light of the soul. Everyone has an aura; they come in different colors and each color means something. Gold means a gift of God. So, these three ‘wise men’ ‘worshipped Jesus and gave him gifts. They departed just as those three heavenly bodies were separating into their individual orbits. In commemoration to the greatest gift God ever gave to mankind- His own Son, Jesus – every time those three heavenly bodies come back in line, God sends a lesser gift to man. You were born at such a conjunction. You have a gold aura surrounding you. That’s how I know the day and hour of your birth and that’s how I know your destiny lies in the West. The lady’s statement is interesting in combining things which are normally considered to be separate. The term astrologer does not occur in the Bible, but the term star gazers does. Thus, I would like to carry out a comparison between the star focused events around the birth of Jesus in light of the astrologian’s point that before God does anything on earth, he always declares it in the heavens first. Thus, we need to start with the stars and their role in the heavens and the interpreters who can read that message. We may call them the messengers. 12, The Messengers The messengers in the story in Matthew are the Magushe or the Magi. They come having interpreted two things from looking at the heavens. They have looked into the stars and seen that a king was born, and he was born for the Judeans or in some translations the Jews. The messenger in the story of Branham is a woman. She claims she is a star gazer and as evidence that she can read the heavens and interpret events on earth she 12 could reveal the exact birthday and hour of a man she just met on the bus. She could do this just by identifying a spirit light over him which was the color gold this spiritual light alone told her that he was born in a certain year at a certain time in the year, and at a certain hour in a certain day. She claims there was a conjunction of three heavenly bodies on April the 9 th 1909 which was the exact same conjunction of planets which happen sometime around 7 to 1 BC over Jerusalem. She does not tell us what these three heavenly bodies are. For evidence that heavenly bodies influence things on earth she pointed to the moon and the tides. This is scientific evidence of influence which modern science agrees with. “The tide is the regular rise and fall of ocean waters. Tides are caused by the gravitational pull of the moon and the sun on seas”11 . For the outside observer this physical fact does not explain why a conjunction of three heavenly bodies should point to the birth of a gift to mankind. The message of the woman was that God tells in the heavens what he is going to do on earth. For her this indicates that even at the birth of a child, what that child is a partly determined by what planets and stars are present in the sky when they are born. The fact that she could look at William Branham and just from that look with a few questions tell him is birthday indicates she can see things ordinary people cannot see. The fact that she selected William Branham as opposed to the sailor standing next to him, indicates perhaps this was a message he needed to hear. We know that according to the other messages Branham had received God had sent an angel to tell him he had something special to do and another person who knew how to see secret things had pointed him out as having a light following him around. We need to see if we can find out what a sign is and what sign occurred in April 6th, 1909. 13, The Sign of the Conjunction The calendars used in Biblical times are vitally important in helping us understand the Bible and biblical events. In Genesis it is stated that the sun, moon and stars were given for signs 11 [CITATION Fun86 \p 1711 \l 1033 ]. 13 (otot) and for appointed times (moadim). The knowledge of the calendars and chronologies of the biblical period is very important for our dating of biblical events and their position relative to the societies’ contemporary with the Bible 12. William Branham (April 6th, 1909 – December 24th, 1965) was 56 years old when he passed to glory. William Branham was born on Tuesday April 6th, 1909, that is 15th Nisan 5669 according to the Jewish calendar. This means in terms of the gospel of John it was Passover night. Jesus of Nazareth was crucified on the same date in AD 30. Faulstich in his Bible Chronology How to Do it and How to Use it makes some important observations: “Jesus died on a Friday, according to the Biblical account and the traditions of the Church from the earliest times. Passover occurred on the Friday in A.D. 30 but did not occur on a Friday at any time during the reign of Pilate before A.D. 30”13. This date was Friday, April 5th 30 AD. Thus, it was 1839 years before the birth of Branham. Branham died in Amarillo, Texas on December 24th, 1965 that is the new moon 1st Tevet 5726. This day on the calendar was call rosh chodesh tevet14. He was not buried until Monday April 11th, 1966, that is Nisan 21 5726. This day was called Passover Shmini (8th) in the diaspora and was the 6th day of the Jewish counting of the Omer leading to Pentecost. However, the crash which killed Branham took place on December 18th, 1965, that was a shabbat and was Kislev 24 5726. That is it was the 24th day of the 9th month the day the foundation of the Temple had been laid in the time of Haggai the prophet. It is also the beginning of the feast of Hanukkah. He lay in a coma for most of the feast of Hanukah15. 12 [CITATION Nac12 \p 230 \l 1033 ] 13 [ CITATION Fau99 \l 1033 ] 14 Tevet 1 is very important in the Antony Hylton’s life for on this date in 1998 he was given a dream and sent to Israel for 7 years. He had the dream whilst visiting Stockholm Sweden. 15 He died during much controversy and after causing much doctrinal confusion because he did not know the Bible but insisted on teaching. One of the angels he met actually rebuked him for teaching. 14 For many of his followers and even other Charismatics and Pentecostals, William Marrion Branham was a healing prophet. It is quite clear from the testimonies of thousands that he heard from heaven accurately and as Jesus promised, he did greater things than Jesus did, if not in quality then in number. According to the prophet Isaiah he and the children he was given were for signs and wonders (Isaiah 8:18). If we observe the birth and death dates of Branham, we may notice one interesting fact. He was born at Passover when Jesus died, and he died on December 24th when the Church remembers Jesus’ birth. The fact that the accident occurred 6 days earlier which was the 24th of Kislev is an additional sign showing forth the prophetic nature of his life. 14 The Timeline of Signs 1 15 Nisan 5669/ April 6 1909 Birth 2 6 Iyyar 5706/ May 7 1946 Angelic visitation and sending 21st day of the Omer, parshat Emor. 15 Messages from Beyond June 1933 Jeffersonville Masonic Hall Trance Benito Mussolini will invade Ethiopia and take it period the poorer country will fall at his steps. (Heshvan 2 5702) May 1946 When Jesus was born, only stargazers - which were astrologers saw his star in the East and followed it to Bethlehem. Not one holy man in Palestine saw it. Could that have been the same star that appeared over the Ohio River in 1933 while he was baptizing people after his 1st revival meetings? 19 The Angel’s Message May 8th 1946, Iyyar 22 5706 I am sent from the presence of Almighty God to tell you that your particular birth and misunderstood life has been to indicate that you are to take a gift of divine healing to the peoples of the world. If you will be sincere when you pray and get the people to believe you, nothing shall stand before your prayer, not even cancer period. You will go into many parts of the earth and will pray for kings and rulers and potentates. You will preach to multitudes the world over and thousands will come to you for counsel. You must tell them that their thoughts speak louder in heaven than their words. As the Prophet Moses was given two signs to prove he was sent from God, so you will be given two signs. First when you take a person's right hand in your left hand, you will be able to detect the presence of any germ-caused disease by vibrations that will appear in your left hand. Then you must pray for the person. if your hand returns to normal, you can pronounce the person healed; If it doesn't, just ask a blessing and walk away. Under the anointing from God, do not try to think your own thoughts; It will be given you what to say. 20 The second sign is greater than the first period if you will stay humble and sincere, it will come to pass that you will be able to tell by vision the very secrets of their hearts. Then the people will have to believe you. This will initiate the gospel in power that will bring on the second coming of Christ. Don't you understand so it was in the days of Jesus Christ our Lord? It is the Holy Spirit of God. Now those visions will multiply in your life. Consider the life of Jesus Christ. When Nathaniel first came in his presence, Jesus said “Behold an Israelite indeed, in whom is no guile!” Nathaniel asked, “Whence knowest thou me? To which our Lord replied, before that Philip called thee, when thou wast under the fig tree, I saw thee. How did our Lord see Nathaniel? He saw him by vision. Remember how the son of God declared, “The son can do nothing of himself, but what he seeth the Father do: For what things so ever he doeth, these also doeth the Son likewise. Did you ever wonder what this meant? It means that the Father showed the Son visions that let him know what he should do. He proved this when, at the pool of Bethesda, he passed through a large crowd of sick and needy people to heal one certain man. The visions showed our Lord Jesus in advance what would happen. Remember how he knew that Peter would find a coin in the mouth of a fish? Consider how our Lord Jesus, when he approached Jerusalem, said to his disciples, “Go into the village over against you, and straightway you shall find an ass tied, and a colt with her: loose them, and bring them unto me, and if any man say aught unto you, Ye shall say, The Lord hath need of them; And straightway he will send them; did it not happen exactly as our Lord described? He knew it would, because he saw it first by vision from the Father. What is more, there will come a time in your ministry when the visions will reveal to you the secrets hid in people's hearts that are hindering them from being healed. Consider the woman at 21 the well in Samaria. Jesus talked with her until he contacted her spirit; Then by vision he saw where her trouble lay. He said, “Go call your husband and come hither”. When the woman replied, “I have no husband”, Jesus answered, “Thou hast well said”, ‘I have no husband’: for thou hast had 5 husbands; And he whom thou hast now is not thy husband. This caused the woman to exclaim ‘Sir, I perceive that you thou art of prophet. So, shall it come to be in your ministry, if you will be sincere. Never forget that Jesus Christ is the same yesterday, today, and forever, as the Scriptures have declared, It will not be you who accomplishes any of this; It will be the Lord Jesus Christ. Remember that Jesus promised his followers: he that believeth on me the works that I do shall he do also; And greater works than these shall he do; Because I go unto my Father ... Yet a little while, and the world seeth me no more; But you see me: because I live, ye shall live also. At that day he shall know that I am in the Father, and ye in me, and I in you. I'll be with you said the Angel whenever you experience this same feeling that you feel now in my presence, you will know that I am standing nearby. 20 A Prayers of William Branham 21 Healing John Himmel’s Son 1940 Heavenly Father, Forgive the stupidity of your servant for going ahead of the vision. Heal this baby in the name of Jesus Christ. 22 Guidance On the Way to South Boston (1940) After something gripped Bill’s insides Heavenly Father, 22 What would you have your servant know? 3 God, if I have been wrong and have turned down something from you because I didn’t understand it; If I have been wrong then please forgive me.” 23 Some Visionary Symbols of William Branham 1 pneumonia This was seen in the vision as hideously twisted arms and legs. The rest of the vision was literal. 24 Three steps In the healing of Himmel’s son, Branham told him it would be three days before the pneumonia would leave the child completely because in the vision the child had take three steps. Branham does not explain how he knew three steps meant three days. But prophesied that after three days the healed boy would come to him and say “Brother Bill I am perfectly whole”. He then told members of his congregation to come and witness the event. 25 3 Flies These represent evil spirits, such as spirit of divination and fortunetelling. 26 Sensing the Presence as William Branham 1 Peculiar pressure on his skin as if someone or something powerful was standing nearby. 28 Healing by the Word of the Lord 1 Georgie Carter was bedridden for nine years. Her family were Church of Christ and considered Billy and the idea of healing to be a deception. Georgie had a copy of William Branham’s book Jesus Christ the Same Yesterday today and Forever and pray that he would come and she would be healed. The first time he came he told her about the Hail daughter. But 23 he did not have a vision for Georgie. He returned after two weeks. He felt he needed to pray went to the forest to pray. A voice said “Go by way of Carters and Georgie will be healed” Sister Georgie, the Lord Jesus Christ, whom you have loved and trusted all this time, that same Jesus has met me in the woods tonight and told me in a vision that you would be made well. Therefore, I take you by the hand and say, in the name of Jesus Christ, stand to your feet and be made whole. 29 2. The Healing of Mrs Andrews She was about to die and Branham prayed for her, He had not yet seen a vision so he did not know if she would live. Then he went out with his wife and did something. He then returned to the room of the dying lady. As he crossed the threshold into the room he saw a vision of her bringing him apple pie and him eating it. From this he concluded that she was going to live. He then declares to his wife “Honey it’s going to be alright, God has heard our prayers”. A nurse asked about it. He answered “Mrs. Andrews will bake me a cake in three days from now. If that isn’t so, then I’ll leave the ministry.” He then went to the husband who had just given his life to the Lord. He said to him: Thus saith the Lord, Your wife is going to be alright. Don’t worry Mr Andrews”. Mr Andrews came later and said the doctor said she is dying now. Branham answered “But the Lord Jesus said she is going to live. Don’t you believe what I told you?” He replied he wanted to but the doctors said she could survive even an hour. Branham replied “It doesn’t make a bit of difference what the doctors say. When God speaks anything, it’s got to happen”. 30 Teachings There were 3 realms of spiritual perception. 1 Firstly man’s own faith which is similar to hope. 2 Secondly, Revelation God's faith superimposed on man's faith in God's word. 24 3 Finally visions and prophecy which is a direct thus sayeth the Lord. 4 Visions could be used to explain confusing events. For example, Branham went to a hospital and prayed for a lady whose name was Linda Smith. She was healed. However the next day she said to her mother that “I am going home”. Her mother said “Yes you were going home to look after your kids”. She said “No, I'm going home to my heavenly home”. She died a few minutes later. Branham asked God for an explanation. Four months later he had a vision. She had fallen down from a Creek and was not found until later time. She should have died but did not. The Lord said she did not die because she was not ready. 30.1 The Seven Church Ages 1 Ephesus Paul 53-170 AD 2 Ireneus 170-312AD 3 St Martin of Tours 312- 606AD 4 Columba 606 -1520 AD 5 Luther 1520 – 1750 AD 6 Wesley 1750 – 1906 AD 7 Elijah 1906 – In Branham’s system the person closest to the teaching of Paul is the angel of each Church age. Irenaeus stayed closest to Paul. Saint Martin of Tours resisted the hybridizing of the Church. Luther taught on faith. Wesley taught on sanctification. He remained until 1906 and Azusa street. Elijah will preach and do miracles. He will be a mighty prophet and true to the word of God. He will turn people to their Pentecostal fathers. He will hate fancy women like Jezebel. He will not be a learned person. 25 He will be a moody person. Israel will be delivered from paganism. 1 Chap 68, Adam went out of the garden because he loved Eve. She was guilty, he was not. He went out eyes wide open. 31 The Mystery of Time Yahuwah’s plan for the earth and the Church is perfect Yahuwah’s moves in the planet earth using the greater light, the sun, and the lesser light, the moon and stars, armies of heaven (tzevaoth) for signs, for days, for years, and for appointed times. Yahuwah also used a calendar he established by Moses or David. This was based on which family of prophets was ministering in the temple in each week. Thus, the temple ministers were divided into 24 families and each family would minister for a 7 day period in the temple. These seven- day periods would switch on Shabbat. On the day they changed the bread of the presence which was in the Holy place in the temple would be changed. With two cycles of the ministering prophets or priests 48 weeks of a year would be covered. Thus, the Bible measured time using the sun, the moon, and the stars but also the prophetic heads of Fathers houses whether the Levitical Priests or Levitical prophets. The solar calendar we use today is based on the work of the assistants of Pope Gregory. In 1582 the European calendars were shifted from that of Julius Caesar’s Astronomical calendar. The attitude of the people of God to the greater light which governs the day and the lesser light which governs by night is clearly to be regulated by the Torah the Prophets and the Gospel. The first mention of time in the Bible is right at the beginning. Gen 1:1  In the beginning God created the heaven and the earth.  Thus the beginning is the time or in biblical terms the person in whom the heavens (shamayim) and the earth (aretz) is created. 26 The introduction of the period day and night takes place in the next few verses: Gen 1:2  And the earth was without form, and void; and darkness was upon the face of the deep. And the Spirit of God moved upon the face of the waters.  Gen 1:3  And God said, Let there be light: and there was light.  Gen 1:4  And God saw the light, that it was good: and God divided the light from the darkness.  Gen 1:5  And God called the light Day, and the darkness he called Night. And the evening and the morning were one day.  The term for day here is one day (yom echad) and not first day (yom rishon). Thus, we are given four measures of time. These are day, night, evening and morning. The next step is the activity of the second and third day. The next stage in the development of time in the Torah adds two ruling lights and the stars. The ruling lights are not given names. Gen 1:14  And God said, Let there be lights in the firmament of the heaven to divide the day from the night; and let them be for signs, and for seasons, and for days, and years:  Gen 1:15  And let them be for lights in the firmament of the heaven to give light upon the earth: and it was so.  Gen 1:16  And God made two great lights; the greater light to rule the day, and the lesser light to rule the night: he made the stars also.  Gen 1:17  And God set them in the firmament of the heaven to give light upon the earth,  Gen 1:18  And to rule over the day and over the night, and to divide the light from the darkness: and God saw that it was good.  Gen 1:19  And the evening and the morning were the fourth 27 day.  Thus on the second day God divided the waters and the space in between the rakia or firmament he called heaven (shamayim). Then he placed lights in this space. These lights are first described as dividing day from night. They are then given four roles. They are for signs (otot), appointed times (moadim), for days (yamim) and for years (shanim). In the next verse they are for lights in the sky of the heavens (meorot) and to cause light (leha-ir) on the earth. When God creates these lights they are given the job of governing or ruling (lememshelet) the day and the night. The verse finished with the stars (et ha kokkavim). The light of the day the light of the night and the stars are set in the heavens to rule. 32 The Stars and Children The first character to continue the identification of the heavenly bodies with human beings is Yahuwah speaking to Abraham and his seed. Gen_15:5  And he brought him forth abroad, and said, Look now toward heaven, and tell the stars, if thou be able to number them: and he said unto him, So shall thy seed be. Gen_22:17  That in blessing I will bless thee, and in multiplying I will multiply thy seed as the stars of the heaven, and as the sand which is upon the sea shore; and thy seed shall possess the gate of his enemies; Gen_26:4  And I will make thy seed to multiply as the stars of heaven, and will give unto thy seed all these countries; and in thy seed shall all the nations of the earth be blessed; Yahuwah makes a comparison between the number lessness of the stars and the number lessness of Abrams seed. Abram the man with no children will have so many seeds that you would not be able to count them. The Sun the Moon and the Stars as Royal Family. 28 Jacob goes further than Yahuwah and reveals a tradition that each individual person in his family is represented by a heavenly body. He does this in interpreting Joseph’s dream. In the world of the dream the activity of a star can represent the activity of the person represented by that star. Gen 37:9  And he dreamed yet another dream, and told it his brethren, and said, Behold, I have dreamed a dream more; and, behold, the sun and the moon and the eleven stars made obeisance to me.  Gen 37:10  And he told it to his father, and to his brethren: and his father rebuked him, and said unto him, What is this dream that thou hast dreamed? Shall I and thy mother and thy brethren indeed come to bow down ourselves to thee to the earth?  Here it is clear both Joseph and Jacob see that stars are representing them in the future. 33 The Heavenly Bodies in Moses Moses also uses the illustration of the stars representing the uncountable number of Abraham’s seed: Exo_32:13  Remember Abraham, Isaac, and Israel, thy servants, to whom thou swarest by thine own self, and saidst unto them, I will multiply your seed as the stars of heaven, and all this land that I have spoken of will I give unto your seed, and they shall inherit it for ever. Deu_1:10  Yahuwah your God hath multiplied you, and, behold, ye are this day as the stars of heaven for multitude. However, Moses in the Mishnah Torah also deals with the attitude that the son of Israel are to have toward the stars in the physical sky in light of what other nations had begun to do: Deu 4:15  Take ye therefore good heed unto yourselves; for ye saw no manner of similitude on the day that Yahuwah spake 29 unto you in Horeb out of the midst of the fire:  Deu 4:16  Lest ye corrupt yourselves, and make you a graven image, the form of any figure, the likeness of male or female,  Deu 4:17  The likeness of any beast that is on the earth, the likeness of any winged fowl that flieth in the air,  Deu 4:18  The likeness of any thing that creepeth on the ground, the likeness of any fish that is in the waters beneath the earth:  Deu 4:19  And lest thou lift up thine eyes unto heaven, and when thou seest the sun, and the moon, and the stars, even all the host of heaven, shouldest be driven to worship them, and serve them, which Yahuwah thy God hath divided unto all nations under the whole heaven.  The people of Israel then are forbidden to prostate to or serve graven images or the heavenly bodies as in the sun, the moon and the stars. 34 Were the Stars given to the nations for worship? Keil and Delitzch make a very interesting comment in regard to this question: They were not to allow themselves to be torn away (‫ )נִדַּ ח‬to worship the stars of heaven, namely, by the seductive influence exerted upon the senses by the sight of the heavenly bodies as they shone in their glorious splendour. The reason for this prohibition is given in the relative clause, “which Jehovah thy God hath allotted to all nations under the whole heaven.” The thought is not, “God has given the heathen the sun, moon, and stars for service, i.e., to serve them with their light,” as Onkelos, the Rabbins, Jerome, and others, suppose, but He has allotted them to them for worship, i.e., permitted them to choose them as the objects of their worship, which is the view adopted by Justin Martyr, Clemens Alex., and others. 30 According to the scriptural view, even the idolatry of the heathen existed by divine permission and arrangement. God gave up the heathen to idolatry and shameful lusts, because, although they knew Him from His works, they did not praise Him as God (Rom_1:21, Rom_1:24, Rom_1:26). This observation by Delitzch in his reading of the Scripture, Justin Martyr and Clement of Alexandria is challenged by the word of John Gill and his reflection Job from the land of the Edomites: shouldest be driven to worship them, and serve them; should have an impulse on their minds and their hearts, be inclined and drawn to the worship of them, partly by considering their splendour, glory, and usefulness, and partly by the example of others; for the worshipping of these seems to be and is the first kind of idolatry men gave into, at least it was very ancient; see Job_31:26, which the Lord thy God hath divided unto all nations under the whole heaven; the sun and the moon by their constant revolutions visit all the parts of the world, and stars are fixed in both hemispheres, so that all nations of the earth receive the benefit and advantage of all these heavenly bodies; but were never designed to be the objects of their worship, as might be learnt from their being divided to them, sometimes one part of the earth enjoying them, and then another, and not present with them all at one and the same time, which, if deities, would have been necessary; see Psa_19:6. Job sees the worship of the sun or the moon even in the heart as a sin that needs to be judged: Job 31:26  If I beheld the sun when it shined, or the moon walking in brightness;  Job 31:27  And my heart hath been secretly enticed, or my mouth hath kissed my hand:  31 35 Stars in the Prophets and the Psalmists 1a The Edomite Prophet Job heard Yahuwah say that the morning stars sang together when the foundation of the world was laid. In this case the stars are also paralleled with the sons of God28 Job_38:7  When the morning stars sang together, and all the sons of God shouted for joy? 2a The writer of the book of Judges understood that the stars moved in courses and they influenced the war against Sisera. Thus the stars were seen to be inluences the war which was going on on earth. Jdg_5:20  They fought from heaven; the stars in their courses fought against Sisera. 3a The Psalmists also see the stars and other heavenly bodies as praising Yahuwah. They understand that the stars should be considered, that they are ordained, that they rule at night, can be number only by Yahuwah, and have names. Psa_8:3  When I consider thy heavens, the work of thy fingers, the moon and the stars, which thou hast ordained; the moon and the star rule at night, Psa_136:9  The moon and stars to rule by night: for his mercy endureth for ever. Psa_147:4  He telleth the number of the stars; he calleth them all by their names. Psa_148:3  Praise ye him, sun and moon: praise him, all ye 28 The idea of the stars singing is an important one. The Philosophy of Pythagoras and his school had studies on the music of the spheres. This assigned music to the heavenly bodies. This music was heard by Yahuwah. 32 stars of light. Thus the stars have been ordained and are that the beck and call of Yahuwah who calls them by name. 36 The Major Prophets and the Stars Isaiah, Jeremiah and Ezekiel also add to our biblical understanding of the stars. I Isa_13:10  For the stars of heaven and the constellations thereof shall not give their light: the sun shall be darkened in his going forth, and the moon shall not cause her light to shine. Isaiah adds the term kesileihem which is translated as constellation. He uses the stars the moon and the sun as part of a prophecy regarding the future. He prophesies the end of Babylon and the impact that war will have on the stars and the moon and the sun. Isa 13:9  Behold, the day of Yahuwah cometh, cruel both with wrath and fierce anger, to lay the land desolate: and he shall destroy the sinners thereof out of it.  Isa 13:10  For the stars of heaven and the constellations thereof shall not give their light: the sun shall be darkened in his going forth, and the moon shall not cause her light to shine.  Isa 13:11  And I will punish the world for their evil, and the wicked for their iniquity; and I will cause the arrogancy of the proud to cease, and will lay low the haughtiness of the terrible.  Isa 13:12  I will make a man more precious than fine gold; even a man than the golden wedge of Ophir.  Isa 13:13  Therefore I will shake the heavens, and the earth shall remove out of her place, in the wrath of the Yahuwah of hosts, and in the day of his fierce anger.  Isa 13:14  And it shall be as the chased roe, and as a sheep that no man taketh up: they shall every man turn to his own people, 33 and flee every one into his own land.  Isa 13:15  Every one that is found shall be thrust through; and every one that is joined unto them shall fall by the sword.  Isa 13:16  Their children also shall be dashed to pieces before their eyes; their houses shall be spoiled, and their wives ravished.  Isa 13:17  Behold, I will stir up the Medes against them, which shall not regard silver; and as for gold, they shall not delight in it.  Isa 13:18  Their bows also shall dash the young men to pieces; and they shall have no pity on the fruit of the womb; their eye shall not spare children.  Isa 13:19  And Babylon, the glory of kingdoms, the beauty of the Chaldees' excellency, shall be as when God overthrew Sodom and Gomorrah.  Isa 13:20  It shall never be inhabited, neither shall it be dwelt in from generation to generation: neither shall the Arabian pitch tent there; neither shall the shepherds make their fold there.  Isa 13:21  But wild beasts of the desert shall lie there; and their houses shall be full of doleful creatures; and owls shall dwell there, and satyrs shall dance there.  Isa 13:22  And the wild beasts of the islands shall cry in their desolate houses, and dragons in their pleasant palaces: and her time is near to come, and her days shall not be prolonged.  The prophecy of Isaiah regarding Hillel or Lucifer refers to the “stars of el”. Isa_14:13  For thou hast said in thine heart, I will ascend into heaven, I will exalt my throne above the stars of God: I will sit also upon the mount of the congregation, in the sides of the north: 34 Jer_31:35  Thus saith Yahuwah, which giveth the sun for a light by day, and the ordinances of the moon and of the stars for a light by night, which divideth the sea when the waves thereof roar; Yahuwah of hosts is his name: Eze_32:7  And when I shall put thee out, I will cover the heaven, and make the stars thereof dark; I will cover the sun with a cloud, and the moon shall not give her light. 37 The Heavens Declare the Glory of Yahuwah The prophets then make it clear that the heavens (shamayim) declare the glory of El (Psalm 19:1). The heavens included the merot or the great lights, to rule day and night, and the heaven included the stars. These heavenly bodies were clearly observed from the earth. David understands that they carry a message. The rakia or the sky into which Yahuwah placed the sun, moon and stars preaches El’s handiwork. There is a message in the sky and the question is can we read it. The sun and moon are given as otot, that is signs or in modern parlance the letters of the alphabet. The heaven are declaring a message in a language. We saints have that message as revealed by the prophets or psalmists of Israel, but the nations around Israel also studied the heavens and came to scientifically measure them, and in their literature to represent them in stories. 38 The Angelic Prophetic View of Ministry When Branham saw Christians he saw them with different images: 1 The anointing was like a curtain that had been pulled aside from a window giving a glimpse of the spiritual world beyond. 2 A faint halo surrounded true saints. 3 A saint brought with them a spirit of welcome to Branham. 4 If a doubt troubled a saint William Branham saw a dark streak following behind. 35 5 If a saint was being tormented by a devil Branham saw a black wavy shadow. 6 Devils appeared as dark clouds, cold and indifferent. 7 A person considering suicide was seen as a dark fog of demons prompting the person to commit the act. 8 If someone was dying, he was seen with a dark shadow surrounding the head. He would say that person was shadowed by death. 9 When a devil causing a specific disease was exposed it would scream for help from demons around about. This was seen as a dark streak running from one person on the stage to someone in the audience. 10 Under the anointing William Branham could feel the faith of people pulling on his gift. William Branham knew that his gift operated by the faith of each individual. 12 A few words of conversation with people was all it took to bring on a vision. 13 If Branham kept talking, he would be using a lot of energy. He tried to say enough to raise the faith of each person so they could receive the healing period 14 Without a vision Branham could tell when a Christian was healed because the halo around the person flashed extra bright. 15 Branham would watch the pillar of fire move out over the audience and then stop and a vision might break out based on that. Sometimes he saw the pillar as a milky mist hanging over the people, then many Christians would be pulling upon his gift by their faith. 17 When many pulled he would dispense of the prayer. line and offer a general prayer for every person in the building 36 39 Reflection on Angelic Methods of Training Branham It is fascinating to see the gradual develop of Branham’s understanding of his call and to see how the angel gradually revealed himself. It also interesting that it appears to me that the angel never finally revealed his name. He never introduced himself. For me it is also fascinating that the angel never had a beard. An angel that never revealed his name and never introduced himself officially. But the presence of the angel was all too real. It is also fascinating to me the spiritual characters who turn up to give messages to Branham. Bibliography  Anderson, Allan (2004). An Introduction to Pentecostalism.
