Implications for counseling practice are provided to assist secondary school-based counselors in preparing their African American students for the academic and socio-cultural challenges they will face when transitioning to PWIs. Implications are also provided for counselors working in college counseling centers, career counseling centers, and academic advising and retention programs at PWIs to effectively support and retain their African American college students.

The Need for Relatedness at College Questionnaire (NRC-Q) was developed and tested to provide an instrument for identifying and understanding the various ways in which needs for relatedness, a salient motivator for many CSC, affect college success. On the basis of the recommendation from D. cultural critique of V. Tinto's (1993) theory, the scale was developed with a self-determination theory (E. L. Deci & M. R. Ryan, 1991) perspective. Results support the content validity, internal consistency, temporal stability, and construct validity of the scale items, and a confirmatory factor analysis supported the underlying structures of the scale. Results also suggest that college students' needs for relatedness at home are more complex than previous research has suggested.

The emergence model: An alternative pedagogy for facilitating selfreflection and theoretical fit in counseling students. Counselor Education and Supervision, 44, Emergence Model 2 Abstract Counselor education literature that has focused on student acquisition of theoretical orientations is critically reviewed in this paper to identify the potential of these practices to facilitate theoretical fit and critical self-reflection among students. Two reflective, awareness-based pedagogical models, radical constructivism and transformative learning (Meizerow, 1997), are also examined. The author concludes by briefly outlining an alternative pedagogical framework called the emergence model, which may enhance the ability of counselor educators to facilitate self-reflection and theoretical fit among counseling students.
