Overview
"Battle Through the Heavens" is a Chinese fantasy action television series that aired in 2018, adapted from the web novel of the same name by Tian Can Tu Dou (Li Hu). The series, directed by Yu Rongguang, stars Wu Lei, Lin Yun, Chen Chuhe, and others. Comprising 45 episodes, it premiered on September 3, 2018, on Hunan TV's Youth Theater and was simultaneously streamed online on Tencent Video. Centered around a grand world view, a passionate growth story, and complex factional struggles, the series follows the legendary journey of the young Xiao Yan, who falls from genius to mediocrity and then, through perseverance and wisdom, climbs back to the pinnacle step by step. As an adaptation with a massive original fanbase, the series garnered widespread attention and discussion during its broadcast, receiving a Douban rating of 6.8.
Plot
The story takes place in a fantasy world named Dou Qi Continent, where cultivating Dou Qi (Fighting Energy) is paramount. Xiao Yan (played by Wu Lei), a genius youth from the Xiao Clan in Wutan City, became the clan's youngest Dou Practitioner in a century by the age of nine. However, three years later, he suffered a devastating blow: his Dou Qi cultivation stagnated and even regressed, eventually falling to the third level of Dou Zhi Qi, plummeting from the clouds into the mud and enduring cold shoulders and ridicule. At his lowest point, Nalan Yanran (played by Liu Meitong), to whom he was betrothed since birth, forcefully breaks off the engagement at his doorstep, bringing him immense humiliation. Enraged, Xiao Yan makes a three-year vow with her, swearing to wash away this disgrace.
Just as Xiao Yan hits rock bottom, a wisp of soul emerges from the ancient ring on his finger—Yao Lao (played by Chen Chuhe). It turns out that Yao Lao, while in a deep slumber, had unintentionally absorbed Xiao Yan's Dou Qi, causing his cultivation to regress. As compensation, Yao Lao decides to take Xiao Yan as his disciple and guide him back to cultivation. Under Yao Lao's tutelage, Xiao Yan not only resumes his cultivation path but also embarks on a perilous journey to search for Different Fires and refine medicinal pills. He leaves Wutan City, enters the Jia Nan Academy to study, meets companions like the ancient clan's young lady Xiao Xun'er (Gu Xun'er, played by Lin Yun), and also faces threats from evil forces like the Soul Palace. As his strength grows, Xiao Yan gradually uncovers the secrets behind his clan's decline and clues left by his mother. He continuously fights to fulfill the three-year vow, protect his loved ones, and oppose dark forces, ultimately shouldering greater responsibilities through his growth.

Cultural Impact
The broadcast of the "Battle Through the Heavens" TV series is a significant case within the wave of adapting online literature IPs for film and television. The original novel, being one of the most influential works in the history of Chinese web novels with hundreds of millions of readers, meant the series carried extremely high expectations from the moment its production was announced. After its release, aspects such as casting, plot adaptation, and special effects became hot topics of discussion. Wu Lei's portrayal of the young Xiao Yan was considered quite spirited, showcasing the character's growth from immaturity to maturity. However, the series' significant deletions and consolidation of the original plot sparked considerable controversy among core book fans, which is one of the main reasons for its polarized reception.
Despite this, thanks to its strong main cast and sustained topical popularity, the series still achieved considerable TV ratings and online viewership. It further expanded the influence of the "Battle Through the Heavens" IP, extending it from novels, comics, and animation (the "Battle Through the Heavens" anime series is well-received) into the realm of live-action film and television, forming a multi-dimensional cultural product matrix. The series also sparked interest, especially among young viewers, in Chinese-style fantasy worldviews. Although the series itself received mixed reviews, it undoubtedly provided valuable experience and lessons for subsequent film/TV adaptations of male-oriented fantasy novels, promoting industry-wide exploration and reflection on production models for such genres.
