Overview
"Fox Spirit Matchmaker: Moon & Red" is a Chinese historical fantasy romance drama that premiered in 2024, directed by Du Lin. The series is adapted from the "Moon & Red" chapter of the同名漫画 (same-name comic) "Fox Spirit Matchmaker" created by Tuo Xiaoxin, serving as one of the live-action adaptations of this popular IP. Set in a world where humans and demons coexist, the story revolves around Tu Shan Hong Hong, a "Red Thread Immortal" from the Fox Spirit clan of Tu Shan whose profession is to reconnect the threads of fate for reincarnated souls, and her profound emotional bond with Dongfang Yuechu, which transcends race and time. Comprising 36 episodes, the series blends elements of fantasy, romance, and adventure. It garnered widespread attention and discussion during its broadcast due to its exquisite costumes and production design, grand scene construction, and adaptation of the original plot. The series holds a rating of 6.8 on Douban.
Plot
The story takes place in a world where humans and demons coexist. Tu Shan is the dwelling place of fox spirits. Among them, the powerful Tu Shan Hong Hong (played by Yang Mi) is the ruler of Tu Shan and a "Red Thread Immortal" responsible for tying the red threads of fate for humans and demons seeking reincarnated love. Due to a past trauma, she has closed off her heart, becoming cold and formidable. The human youth Dongfang Yuechu (played by Gong Jun) possesses mysterious bloodline powers. After a family upheaval, he flees to Tu Shan and encounters Tu Shan Hong Hong. Initially, conflicts arise between them due to racial barriers and differing stances. However, Dongfang Yuechu's sincerity and kindness gradually melt Hong Hong's icy exterior. As they work together to face external crises and protect the peace of Tu Shan and the human world, feelings begin to blossom between them.
Yet, their love faces significant trials. Dongfang Yuechu's special bloodline attracts the covetous attention of various forces, and the long-standing conflicts and prejudices between humans and demons also create a chasm between them. The plot not only depicts the delicate process of Tu Shan Hong Hong and Dongfang Yuechu's journey from acquaintance to mutual understanding and love but also interweaves the touching stories of reincarnated fate involving other characters, showcasing the eternal theme of love transcending life, death, race, and memory. While presenting a romantic love story, the series also explores profound themes of responsibility, growth, and racial integration.

Cultural Impact
The broadcast of "Fox Spirit Matchmaker: Moon & Red" represents a significant case within the wave of live-action adaptations of domestic anime/comic IPs in China. The original comic boasts a massive fanbase, so the series carried high expectations from the moment its adaptation was announced. Upon airing, its efforts in visual aesthetics received some recognition; for instance, the creation of the Tu Shan fantasy realm and the exquisite design of character costumes reflected the current production standards of domestic historical dramas.
However, the series also sparked widespread discussion regarding the extent of IP adaptation, pacing, and character portrayal. Supporters believe the series captured the core "fated love" essence of the original work and that the main cast has strong appeal. Critics often focused on the alignment between the plot adaptation and the spirit of the source material. This discourse itself reflects the current audience's deep engagement and higher demands for the modern expression of traditional cultural elements (such as fox spirits, reincarnation, red threads of fate).
Furthermore, the series further elevated the知名度 (awareness) of the "Fox Spirit Matchmaker" IP, driving audiences to revisit the original comic and anime series, creating cross-media cultural consumption. The series' exploration of the theme "can love transcend race and memory" also continues the romantic imagination of eternal emotions within Chinese fantasy genres, aligning with the psychological needs of mass cultural consumption.
