Overview

"Fuyao" is a 2018 Chinese mainland historical fantasy romance television series directed by Yang Wenjun. Adapted from Tianxia Guiyuan's novel "Empress Fuyao," the series tells the legendary story of an ordinary girl, Fuyao, who embarks on an adventure across the Five Continents to unravel the secrets of her own seal and origins. Along the way, she meets and forms a deep bond with Crown Prince Zhangsun Wuji of Tianquan Kingdom, and together they fight against an unjust fate. With its grand world-building, exquisite costume and set design, and outstanding performances by the lead actors, the series garnered widespread attention and discussion during its broadcast, becoming one of the popular shows of the 2018 summer season.

Plot

The story begins at Xuanyuan Mountain. Fuyao (played by Yang Mi), a lowly servant girl with average aptitude, carries a mysterious seal. Driven by fate, she sets out on an adventurous journey to save her companions and unexpectedly meets Crown Prince Zhangsun Wuji (played by Ethan Juan) of Tianquan Kingdom. Zhangsun Wuji's true identity is shrouded in mystery; he is highly skilled in martial arts and exceptionally intelligent. Initially suspicious and using each other, the two gradually come to understand and fall in love after enduring life-and-death trials.

Fuyao's journey spans the Five Continents. She successively competes in the Hunting Competition, breaches Changqing Palace, and battles Tiansha. Throughout these events, she continuously breaks through her own limits, unravels layers of seals related to her origins, and gradually exposes the conspiracies and conflicts hidden beneath the peaceful surface of the Five Continents. Zhangsun Wuji remains by her side, and together they face challenges from various forces, including the ambitions and obstructions of figures like Duke Qi Zhen (played by Liu Yijun) of Taiyuan Kingdom. The plot blends political intrigue, martial arts duels, and fantasy elements. The main storyline revolves around Fuyao's growth, the mystery of her origins, and how she and Zhangsun Wuji join hands to defy fate and protect the common people.

Cultural Impact

As a large-scale historical fantasy drama, the broadcast of "Fuyao" had multifaceted cultural impacts. Firstly, the series further solidified the appeal of its female lead, Yang Mi, in the historical drama genre. Her portrayal of Fuyao—an independent, unyielding female character—aligned with the then-popular trend of "strong female lead" narratives, sparking discussions among audiences about themes of female growth. Secondly, the series invested significantly in visual presentation. Its exquisite costumes, sets, and special effects demonstrated the advancement of production technology in domestic television and satisfied viewers' demand for fantasy aesthetics.

Furthermore, "Fuyao" achieved some success in overseas distribution. Broadcast on multiple international platforms, it became one of the cases of Chinese culture "going global," showcasing the unique charm and production quality of Chinese historical dramas to overseas audiences. However, the series also faced some controversies during its broadcast, such as differences in certain plot adaptations from the original novel and pacing issues due to its long episode count. These discussions themselves became part of its dissemination phenomenon, reflecting the diversity of audience viewing and feedback in the internet age.
