Overview

"Nirvana in Fire" is a historical political drama that premiered in September 2015 on Beijing TV and Dragon TV. It was directed by Kong Sheng and Li Xue. Hu Ge plays Mei Changsu, Liu Tao plays Princess Ni Huang, Wang Kai plays Prince Jing Xiao Jingyan, Huang Weide plays Prince Yu, Chen Long plays Meng Zhi, and Wu Lei plays Fei Liu. The entire series consists of 54 episodes and holds a Douban rating of 9.4, making it one of the highest-rated domestic historical dramas.

The series is adapted from Hai Yan's web novel of the same name. It tells the story of Mei Changsu, the top scholar on the Langya List, who arrives in the imperial capital Jinling with a frail body. He secretly assists Prince Jing Xiao Jingyan, who is not favored by the emperor, in the struggle for the throne, ultimately clearing the name of the Chiyan Army, which was falsely accused of treason thirteen years ago. "Nirvana in Fire" has become a benchmark for domestic historical dramas due to its intricate political schemes, outstanding character portrayals, and exquisite production quality.

Plot

Twelve years ago, the Chiyan Army, the most elite force of the Liang Kingdom, suffered a tragedy at Meiling—70,000 soldiers were falsely accused of treason and annihilated. Lin Shu, the son of the Chiyan Army commander Lin Xie, miraculously survived but was poisoned with a rare toxin called Huo Han Du, which completely altered his appearance, stripped him of his martial arts, and left him frail and sickly. After twelve years of seclusion, he returns to the imperial capital Jinling under the new identity of Mei Changsu.

At this time, the Crown Prince and Prince Yu are fiercely competing for the throne in Jinling. On the surface, Mei Changsu is the Qilin Talent selected by the Langya Pavilion, but in reality, he is an avenger secretly plotting to overturn the Chiyan Army case. He chooses the upright and straightforward Prince Jing Xiao Jingyan, who is not favored by the emperor, as his candidate to assist, because only Prince Jing would be willing to clear the Chiyan Army's name upon ascending the throne.

With his frail body, Mei Changsu maneuvers within the imperial court, planning step by step and layer by layer. He helps Prince Jing defeat the factions of the Crown Prince and Prince Yu one by one while secretly gathering evidence of the Chiyan Army's wrongful case. Ultimately, in the imperial court, Mei Changsu joins forces with loyal ministers to force Emperor Liang to publicly issue an edict to retry the Chiyan Army case, finally vindicating the 70,000 wronged souls.
