Overview

"Plot Against" is a Chinese spy-themed television series that aired in 2005. Directed and starring Liu Yunlong, it also features Gao Ming, Song Chunli, Zhu Xijuan, Wang Baoqiang, Chen Shu, Wang Kuirong, and others. The entire series consists of 40 episodes and holds a Douban rating of 9.0. Adapted from Mai Jia's novel of the same name, the series is divided into three independent story units: "Listening to the Wind," "Watching the Wind," and "Catching the Wind." Each unit depicts the legendary experiences of intelligence personnel on the covert front during different periods.

"Plot Against" is regarded as the pioneering work and classic pinnacle of domestic spy dramas, predating the later hit "Lurk" by three years. It was the first to bring details of intelligence work such as code-breaking and radio interception to the screen. With an extremely professional perspective and gripping narrative, it unveiled a mysterious and thrilling hidden world for the audience. Liu Yunlong established his market position as the king of spy dramas through this series.

Plot

"Plot Against" is divided into three independent story units, each focusing on different protagonists and historical backgrounds.

"Listening to the Wind" tells the story of A Bing (played by Wang Baoqiang), a genius hearing expert recruited into the national security department in the early days of the People's Republic of China, responsible for intercepting enemy radio signals. Although intellectually challenged, A Bing possesses extraordinary auditory talent, able to distinguish specific signals from chaotic radio waves. With his help, our side successfully cracked several major spy cases. However, this genius ultimately meets a tragic fate.

"Watching the Wind" centers on the mathematical genius Huang Yiyi (played by Chen Shu), who is recruited into the code-breaking department and uses her astonishing mathematical talent to decipher advanced enemy codes. Huang Yiyi is a distinctive, passionate, and resolute intellectual woman. She demonstrates remarkable intelligence and perseverance in code-breaking but repeatedly faces setbacks in her personal emotions. This role is also one of the representative works in Chen Shu's acting career.

"Catching the Wind" features Liu Yunlong as the male protagonist Qian Zhijiang, telling the story of an intelligence agent undercover within the enemy ranks, engaging in a battle of wits in a perilous environment. This is the longest and most complex of the three stories, filled with suspense and twists.

Cultural Impact

"Plot Against" initiated the golden age of Chinese spy dramas. Before this, domestic spy-themed film and television works were scarce and mostly set during the War of Resistance against Japan. "Plot Against" shifted its focus to the intelligence front after the founding of the People's Republic of China. Based on highly professional knowledge of cryptography and radio, it constructed a spy world that combines intellectual博弈 with human depth.

The success of this series spurred a wave of spy dramas. Subsequently, excellent spy dramas such as "Lurk," "The Brink," and "The Disguiser" emerged one after another, forming a profoundly influential television genre. It can be said that without the pioneering efforts of "Plot Against," there would not have been the later prosperity of spy dramas.

Wang Baoqiang's performance in the "Listening to the Wind" unit is impressive. At that time, not yet famous, he portrayed A Bing's innocence, persistence, and vulnerability with genuine emotion, making it one of his early representative roles. Chen Shu rose to fame with the role of Huang Yiyi, vividly portraying an exceptionally talented female intellectual misunderstood by her era.
