Overview

"The Wind Blows from Longxi" is a 2022 historical spy drama directed by Lu Yang, adapted from Ma Boyong's novel of the same name. The series stars Chen Kun and Bai Yu in leading roles, with special appearances by Dong Zijian, Guo Jingfei, and Li Guangjie. It premiered in the prime-time slot on CCTV-8. With a total of 24 episodes and a Douban rating of 8.1, it is considered one of the best-received historical spy-themed TV dramas in recent years.

Set against the historical backdrop of Zhuge Liang's Northern Expeditions during the late Three Kingdoms period, the series creatively integrates modern spy narrative techniques into ancient warfare, crafting a historical espionage blockbuster. Director Lu Yang, previously known for "A Writer's Odyssey" and the "Brotherhood of Blades" film series, returns to television, demonstrating precise control over complex storytelling and genre fusion.

Plot

In 228 AD, Zhuge Liang, the Chancellor of Shu Han, launched a Northern Expedition but suffered a major defeat due to false intelligence. Analysis by Shu's intelligence agency, Si Wen Cao, revealed that the misleading information came from Chen Gong (played by Chen Kun), a high-level sleeper agent codenamed "White Emperor" who was Shu's top spy embedded in the Tianshui region of Wei. His intelligence had always been regarded as Shu's most reliable source.

Shu's counter-espionage expert Xun Xu (played by Bai Yu) is urgently tasked with infiltrating Wei to investigate whether Chen Gong has defected. Xun Xu and Chen Gong are long-time life-and-death partners; he knows Chen Gong's character well, but the mission demands he uncover the truth. Assuming a false identity, Xun Xu infiltrates Tianshui, embarking on a heart-pounding investigation.

As the investigation deepens, Xun Xu discovers the situation is far more complex than it appears. Wei's intelligence agency has also deployed a high-level spy codenamed "Candle Dragon" to infiltrate Shu. Both sides engage in a deadly shadow war. Is Chen Gong a traitor or a double agent? What is the true identity of Candle Dragon? Amidst layers of deception, the life-and-death brothers Chen Gong and Xun Xu must trust each other while remaining wary, walking a razor's edge.

The series features a tight, mind-bending plot. From searching for White Emperor to investigating Candle Dragon, the espionage warfare, counter-intrigue, conspiracies, and betrayals between Shu Han and Cao Wei are intricately woven, leading to continuous climaxes and suspense. The final major plot twist leaves the audience in awe, recontextualizing all previous foreshadowing.

Reception and Reviews

The series opened with a Douban rating of 7.7. As the plot progressed, its reputation grew, eventually stabilizing at 8.1. Audience reviews generally consider it a rare high-quality historical spy drama in recent years, praising its intelligent yet not overly convoluted plot, well-rounded character development, and the widely acclaimed performances of Chen Kun and Bai Yu.

One viewer commented: "It feels like watching a spy film set during the Nationalist-Communist civil war, just with different costumes." This remark highlights the series' success in genre fusion—seamlessly blending the Three Kingdoms historical setting with the narrative logic of modern espionage, creating a fresh viewing experience.

Production

The series is adapted from Ma Boyong's novel of the same name. Ma Boyong is renowned for his historical themes and suspenseful storytelling, with works including "The Longest Day in Chang'an" and "Mystery of Antiques." Director Lu Yang retained the core suspense framework of the original novel while adding numerous action sequences and visual spectacles, ensuring the series possesses both literary depth and commercial appeal.

With 24 episodes, the series follows the model of a premium short-form drama in Chinese television. Each episode maintains a tight pace without filler. The cinematography and art design also received praise, utilizing a predominantly dark palette to create the oppressive and tense atmosphere characteristic of Three Kingdoms-era espionage.

Cultural Significance

The success of "The Wind Blows from Longxi" lies in its breaking of the conventional mold of Chinese historical dramas. Traditional historical dramas often focus on palace intrigue, political machinations, or fantasy, whereas this series innovatively introduces the spy genre into the Three Kingdoms theme, proving that there is still vast room for innovation within historical dramas.

The series also reaffirms the cinematic and televisual value of Ma Boyong's works. Ma Boyong excels at constructing thrilling fictional stories within the gaps of history. His works provide rich material and unique perspectives for screen adaptations, establishing him as a significant source of IP for Chinese film and television.
