Eleni Papalexiou is associate professor at the Dept of Theatre Studies, School of Fine Arts, University of the Peloponnese (UoP), specialized in Theatre Genetics, Performance Analysis and Digital Humanities and Arts. She holds a Ph.D. from Université Sorbonne-Paris IV. As a Fulbright visiting scholar she conducted research at Stanford University (Department of Classics & Department of Theater and Performance Studies, 2014-2015). She has worked intensively on cultural documentation and the digital visualization of the performing arts. She is Principal Investigator of the research project Genesis. Genetic Research and Digital Visualization in the Performing Arts, funded by the Hellenic Foundation for Research and Innovation (2020-2023). She is also Principal Investigator (on behalf of the UoP) of the European Projects CREARCH: Creative European Archives as Innovative Cultural Hubs and ARGOS: Actes de Création et Dynamiques de Collaborations Croisées – Arts de la Scène (Creative Europe Cooperation Projects 2018-2021). From 2018 she is the Greek national ambassador in the Time Machine Organisation, a leading international organisation for cooperation in technology, science and cultural heritage. From 2020 she is the P.I. of the project The Archive of Dimitris Papaioannou. She was the main researcher of the research project ARCH: Archival Research and Cultural Heritage, concerning the archive of the theatre director Romeo Castellucci and the Socìetas Raffaello Sanzio. From 2016 she is academic consultant and curator of the above-mentioned archive. Thanks to the work of the ARCH team, the archive was declared of major historical importance by the Italian Ministry of Culture (2015).

Στο βιβλίο επιχειρείται μία σφαιρική ανάλυση του έργου της εμβληματικής Γαλλίδας σκηνοθέτριας Αριάν Μνουσκίν και της πολυσήμαντης πορείας του «Θεάτρου του Ήλιου», ενός από τους πιο επιδραστικούς θιάσους της ευρωπαϊκής σκηνής. Στην πολυεπίπεδη αυτή μελέτη εξετάζεται η εξηνταετής δημιουργική διαδρομή του θιάσου, από την πρώτη σκηνοθεσία της Μνουσκίν, τον Τζένκινς Χαν, έως την πρόσφατη παράσταση Εδώ έχει δράκους. Μέσα από μία βαθύτερη ματιά στον κόσμο του «Θεάτρου του Ήλιου», φωτίζονται η δημοκρατική δομή και λειτουργία του θιάσου, οι καινοτόμες σκηνικές πρακτικές, ο διαπολιτισμικός του χαρακτήρας, ενώ παράλληλα αναδεικνύεται η πολιτική και κοινωνική του δράση.
Στόχος του βιβλίου είναι να φέρει το ελληνικό κοινό σε επαφή με τη μοναδική καλλιτεχνική και ανθρωπιστική κληρονομιά της Αριάν Μνουσκίν και του «Θεάτρου του Ήλιου». Παράλληλα, η έκδοση φιλοδοξεί να συμβάλει στον εμπλουτισμό της ελληνικής βιβλιογραφίας, προσφέροντας πολύτιμα εργαλεία για την κριτική προσέγγιση της σύγχρονης θεατρικής δημιουργίας.

Ποια η έννοια, η λειτουργία και η χρησιμότητα των αρχείων στην εποχή της ψηφιακής επανάστασης; Ποιες νέες αναγκαιότητες έχουν προκύψει και οφείλουν να υπηρετηθούν; Η εδραίωση επιστημονικών κλάδων, όπως η Δημόσια Ιστορία και οι Ψηφιακές Ανθρωπιστικές Επιστήμες και Τέχνες, έχουν μεταβάλει το αρχειακό τοπίο, εγκαινιάζοντας  προοπτικές αξιοποίησης και ανάδειξης του πολιτιστικού περιεχομένου και καθιστώντας τα αρχεία ζωντανές εστίες έμπνευσης και δημιουργικότητας.
Οι νέες και σύνθετες διαστάσεις της πληροφορίας, των δεδομένων και των μεταδεδομένων, καθώς και οι σύγχρονες ανάγκες για ανοικτότητα, προσβασιμότητα, συμπεριληπτικότητα και ανάπτυξη του κοινού των αρχείων έχουν πυροδοτήσει έναν παραγωγικό διάλογο τόσο μεταξύ των μελών της ερευνητικής ομάδας του ευρωπαϊκού πολυεταιρικού έργου 'CR.E.ARCH.: CReative European ARCHives as Innovative Cultural Hubs', όσο και σε έναν ευρύτερο κύκλο ειδικών ερευνητών και ερευνητριών, αλλά και καλλιτεχνών που υπογράφουν τον τόμο 'Δημιουργικά αρχεία ως ζωντανά τοπία μνήμης στην ψηφιακή εποχή'.

""Άγρια σκυλιά επιτίθενται στον σκηνοθέτη, ένας άντρας αναρριχάται στους τοίχους του ανακτόρου, παραπέμποντας στον Άνθρωπο του Βιτρούβιου, ένα πιάνο με ουρά τυλίγεται στις φλόγες, ένα αγέρωχο άλογο περιδιαβαίνει τη σκηνή, οθόνες τηλεόρασης πέφτουν από ψηλά, ένα λευκό ύφασμα καλύπτει τους θεατές...
Οι εικόνες αυτές ανήκουν στην παράσταση Κόλαση, το πρώτο μέρος από την τριλογία της "Θείας Κωμωδίας" του Δάντη, που ανέβασε η Societas Raffaello Sanzio στην απαιτητική σκηνή της Cour d'honneur du Palais des Papes, στο πλαίσιο του διεθνούς Φεστιβάλ της Αβινιόν στη Γαλλία, το καλοκαίρι του 2008. Το βιβλίο της Έλενας Παπαλεξίου αποτελείται από τέσσερα μέρη. Στο πρώτο μέρος, "Εικονοπλασίες", παρουσιάζεται η μέθοδος με την οποία ο Romeo Castellucci και η ομάδα του επεξεργάζεται το κείμενο και ανασυνθέτει το υλικό της παράστασης. Στο δεύτερο μέρος, "Οργανική ύλη", γίνεται αναφορά στο έμψυχο υλικό της παράστασης και στη σχέση που αναπτύσσεται ανάμεσα στα οργανικά στοιχεία και τις ανάγκες της σκηνής. Στο τρίτο μέρος, "Τράγων ωδές", διερευνάται η σχέση της Socìetas Raffaello Sanzio με την τραγωδία. Η ενότητα αυτή εστιάζει στην "Ορέστεια", ως αντισυμβατική πρόταση για την αναπαράσταση της αρχαίας τραγωδίας και στην "Tragedia Endogonidia".
Τέλος, στο τέταρτο μέρος υπάρχει μια εκτενής συνέντευξη του Romeo Castellucci στη συγγραφέα.

At the turn of the 20th and 21st centuries, Ancient Greek tragedy becomes a field for a wide range of new stage practices, thus showing a true modernity. The elements of representation such as set, actor's performance, and chorus offer a particular heterogeneity. This revival of tragedy provokes as well an increasing interest among translators. This book first focuses on how the text is being staged nowadays. The work then provides an analysis of a number of performances which testify a will to go back to the origins of theatrical language. Thirdly, it offers a critical analysis of cross-cultural interactions at work in the representation of tragedy. And finally, this study describes how certain representations favouring the use of visual arts highlight mainly the personal artistic vision of the director.
Au tournant du XXe et du XXIe siècles, la tragédie grecque devient un champ fertile pour de nouvelles pratiques théâtrales et suscite également l'intérêt des traducteurs; les représentations témoignent d'une vraie modernité et d'une hétérogénéité de composantes scéniques, telles que le décor, le jeu de l'acteur et le chœur. Cette étude propose premièrement une réflexion sur la mise en scène du texte. Deuxièmement, elle présente des mises en scène attestant une volonté de revenir aux origines du langage théâtral et troisièmement, cette analyse met à jour des modes de représentation qui se caractérisent par la transposition de la tragédie grecque dans d'autres cultures. Pour finir, nous dessinons les contours d'un type de mises en scène qui, explorant les multiples possibilités offertes par les arts plastiques, reflètent principalement la vision personnelle du metteur en scène.

This article examines the creation and significance of the Athens Epidaurus Festival archive, documenting 65 years of one of Greece’s most important cultural institutions (1955–2020). The Festival has played a central role in promoting Greek classical heritage while introducing international innovation in performing arts, hosting 3,683 productions of theater, music, opera, and dance. Initially centered at the Ancient Theatre of Epidaurus and the Odeon of Herodes Atticus, the Festival later expanded to various venues, showcasing a wide range of artistic expressions that bolstered Greece’s cultural and tourism sectors while elevating its global profile.
The archive preserves the Festival’s rich history with materials including annual catalogs, posters, photographs, audiovisual recordings, and performance programs. These resources capture key moments in cultural history and reflect the sociopolitical context and artistic trends of each era. A meticulous documentation process, led by a 17-member team under the academic supervision of Eleni Papalexiou and Avra Xepapadakou, organized and digitized this invaluable collection, ensuring accessibility for research and creative purposes.
Containing over 2,700 photographs, 1,100 videos, and hundreds of printed materials, the archive functions as a cultural repository, safeguarding the legacy of the Festival while inspiring future generations of artists, scholars, and audiences with its unparalleled breadth and interdisciplinary significance.

Ο Romeo Castellucci μεταφέρει και πάλι τον θεατή σε μία πραγματική διάσταση, εγείροντας ταυτόχρονα το μυελικό πρόβλημα του ηθοποιού, την έκθεση. Στα μάτια του, ο ηθοποιός είναι ένας μάρτυρας: τόσο εκείνος που σκοπίμως εκτίθεται στην υποκειμενική βία του βλέμματος των άλλων, όσο και εκείνος που αναγκάζεται να αναπαραστήσει τη βία του κόσμου, στην προκειμένη περίπτωση την τραγική εξορία της Βερενίκης. Η σκηνή θα είναι τελικά το όριό του και το μέτρο θα είναι ο πόνος που προκαλεί η έκθεση του σώματός του στο βλέμμα των άλλων.

Transformations of Medea on the contemporary stage
In the late 20th and early 21st centuries, the myth and character of Medea served as a launching pad for breakthrough theatrical approaches on the international stage. In this paper, I propose a typology of staging of Medea, focusing on a corpus of emblematic theatrical productions from Greece and abroad. I explore performances of Medea where the emphasis is placed on the text and its various aesthetic reflections, as well as those that propose a “tribal reading” by highlighting the rituality and the primordial dimension of the tragedy, along with performances that specifically showcase the element of interculturalism. Lastly, I refer to stage creations that, being in contrast to the logocentric nature of ancient tragedy and drawing inspiration from the visual arts and Tanztheater, express a personal perception of the myth of Medea, thus, reshape a new mythology. Within this framework, I attempt to address questions and reflections regarding the choice of translation, the use of the dramatic text, the creative concept and directorial approach, the acting and performing, the handling of the Chorus, as well as the function of spatial, sonar and visual elements.

The chapter discusses large-scale flagship research projects, with special focus on the Time Machine project, which has mobilized European scientific and technological institutes, researchers and companies on an innovative mission at the forefront of computer science and the digital humanities: the reconstruction of the long multicultural history of Europe. This is the largest project ever undertaken in this field at a European level. Supported by ca. 700 institutions, 30 countries and multiple international initiatives, it aspires to offer Europe the technology of preserving and reconstructing its eons-long history and culture. The chapter also presents several possibilities of individual partnerships related to this ambitious project.

Το κεφάλαιο αυτό έχει αφιερωθεί στο ογκωδέστατο αρχείο των Ιταλών καλλιτεχνών, οι οποίοι συντάραξαν τα νερά της διεθνούς σύγχρονης σκηνής με τις σπάνιας καλλιτεχνικής ποιότητας, τόλμης και πρωτοτυπίας σκηνικές τους δημιουργίες. Το συνυπογράφουν οι επιμελήτριες του αρχείου Αύρα Ξεπαπαδάκου και Έλενα Παπαλεξίου, οι οποίες παρουσιάζουν το πολυσύνθετο «γενετικό υλικό», το οποίο προσφέρεται για εις βάθος έρευνα της εξελικτικής πορείας του καλλιτεχνικού έργου και της εν γένει δράσης της ομάδας αυτής που, όπως αναφέρει και ο έγκριτος καθηγητής θεατρολογίας Marco De Marinis, «άλλαξε ριζικά τον τρόπο με τον οποίον σκεφτόμαστε και βλέπουμε το θέατρο στον αιώνα μας». Στο κεφάλαιο εξετάζονται ζητήματα όπως: πώς θα κατορθώσουν τα αρχειακά ιδρύματα να ενδιαφέρουν κοινωνικές ομάδες πέραν της παραδοσιακής ερευνητικής κοινότητας; Πώς μπορούν, χωρίς να αποποιηθούν την κληρονομιά τους, να εξελιχθούν σε κόμβους για την ανάδειξη της δημόσιας ιστορίας μέσα από την ενεργή συμμετοχή της κοινότητας; Σε ειδικές υποενότητες προτείνονται λύσεις και απαντήσεις, με πρώτιστο στόχο την αβίαστη συμμετοχή του/της αρχειονόμου σε μία διαδικασία κατάκτησης και αξιοποίησης δεξιοτήτων στο πεδίο της αρχειονομικής εργασίας. Σύμφωνα με την προσέγγιση των συγγραφέων του μελετήματος, η θεωρητική βάση της παραδοσιακής αρχειονομικής εκπαίδευσης δύναται να διευρυνθεί με τη συμβολή πολλών διαφορετικών κλάδων προερχόμενων από τις Ανθρωπιστικές και Κοινωνικές Επιστήμες, τις Τέχνες, καθώς και τις Επιστήμες των Υπολογιστών. Προκειμένου να αναπτυχθεί μία τελεσφόρα σχέση με το κοινό, υποδεικνύονται παράλληλα πλείστες εφαρμογές και παραδείγματα βέλτιστων υφιστάμενων πρακτικών στο εν λόγω πεδίο.

The presence of new technologies in contemporary theatre is not limited to the use of video and digital imaging, but also extends to the field of cybernetics and robotics. Mechanical figures and anthropomorphic automatic devices star in the international theatrical avant-garde and dominate the cutting edge of contemporary research, while occupying a special place in our imagination fed by archetypal myths, hopes and eternal fears. Sometimes as remote-controlled machines, sometimes as hybrids-extensions of the human body and sometimes as humanoid simulacra, with movements unlike those of humans, these engines ‘embody’ the most convincing but also disturbing simulation of the human, biological entity by an inanimate object. On the basis of scientific robotic research and stage attempts taking place mostly in the Far East, we will attempt to investigate the paradoxical osmosis between two heterogeneous entities, a performer and a machine.

Tο έργο "Η Μηχανή του Χρόνου" είναι ένα μεγάλης κλίμακας εγχείρημα, το οποίο έχει συστρατεύσει ευρωπαϊκά επιστημονικά και τεχνολογικά ιδρύματα, ερευνητές και επιχειρήσεις σε μία καινοτόμο αποστολή που τοποθετείται στην αιχμή της υπολογιστικής επιστήμης και των ψηφιακών ανθρωπιστικών επιστημών: την ανασύνθεση της μακράς και πολυπολιτισμικής ιστορίας της Ευρώπης. Πρόκειται για το πιο εκτεταμένο έργο που έχει αναληφθεί ποτέ στο συγκεκριμένο πεδίο.

H ανακοίνωση αυτή  διερευνά ένα νέο πρότυπο αρχειακής διαχείρισης το οποίο εκπορεύεται από την απρόσκοπτη διάχυση της πληροφορίας, ενώ παράλληλα εστιάζει στη διαδικασία τεκμηρίωσης, με έμφαση στις ιδιαιτερότητες που διέπουν την επεξεργασία ενός «ζωντανού αρχείου» το οποίο διαρκώς εξελίσσεται, ανανεώνεται και μεταβάλλεται. Επιπλέον εξετάζει την ευαίσθητη ισορροπία ανάμεσα στην εφαρμογή επιστημονικών αρχειονομικών μεθόδων και την αρμονική συνεργασία μεταξύ ερευνητών και δημιουργών κατά τη διάρκεια του εγχειρήματος αυτού.

The achievements in the growing domain of the digital humanities greatly facilitate the documentation and processing of archival material, through the elaboration of models for databases and search tools. Due to the great variety of creative processes involved in the performing arts, genetic research must possess the necessary means for the documentation, collection and management of an enormous amount of information, produced during all the stages of creation, from initial conception up to completion on stage.
This article presents the main hypotheses of the newly launched research project ‘Genesis: Genetic Research and Digital Visualisation in the Performing Arts’, which aims to conduct research in the genetic studies of the performing arts, and more specifically to develop and apply a model of digital narration of the creative process. The project is based on the rich and complex work of two internationally acclaimed stage directors, Romeo Castellucci and Dimitris Papaioannou.
