Plot Synopsis
In the Southern Song Dynasty, four years after General Yue Fei's wrongful execution, Prime Minister Qin Hui leads troops to negotiate with the Jin Dynasty, stationed at a military camp in Qiulindu. On the eve of the negotiations, a Jin envoy is found murdered in a locked room within the camp, and a secret letter he carried has vanished. Qin Hui orders his deputy commander Sun Jun (Jackson Yee) to solve the case within one shichen.
Zhang Da (Shen Teng), a lowly soldier, is drawn into the investigation. As events unfold, a series of carefully orchestrated plots are revealed — Zhang Da and his companions are not ordinary soldiers but former subordinates of Yue Fei. Their true objective is neither murder nor theft, but to force Qin Hui to recite Yue Fei's immortal poem "Man Jiang Hong," ensuring the work is preserved for posterity.
The film unfolds within the enclosed military camp, where every character harbors secrets and each reversal is more surprising than the last. From its comedic opening to its tragic conclusion, the emotional arc shifts from lighthearted humor to mounting suspense, culminating in the powerful finale where the entire army recites "Man Jiang Hong" in unison.

Production Features
"Full River Red" showcases Zhang Yimou's exploration of genre fusion:
Locked-Room Mystery Structure: The film employs a classic "locked-room" structure, confining all characters within the military camp. Within the urgent time limit of one shichen, clues are gradually revealed and reversals come one after another, building relentless suspense.
Genre Fusion: The film skillfully weaves together comedy, suspense, and historical tragedy. Shen Teng and Yue Yunpeng's comedic performances generate abundant laughter in the first half, but as the plot progresses, humor gives way to mounting tension, ultimately leading to a stirring historical climax.
Spatial Narrative: Zhang Yimou uses the camp's narrow alleys, courtyards, and rooms as his narrative spaces. Through parkour-style tracking shots and tight editing, he creates rich visual variation and narrative layers within a confined environment.
Henan Opera Score: The film boldly incorporates Henan opera (Yuju) as a musical element. Han Hong's opera performances create a striking contrast with the suspenseful scenes, adding regional character and a distinctive auditory identity.
Body Double Reversal: Lei Jiayin plays both Qin Hui and his body double. The switching between the two characters produces one of the film's most brilliant twists. The body double's recitation of "Man Jiang Hong" in the climactic finale is the film's most electrifying moment.
Cultural Impact
"Full River Red" has had significant cultural influence:
Patriotic Resonance: Using Yue Fei's poem as its emotional core, the film tapped into a deep well of patriotic sentiment. The immortal lines "My hair bristles with anger... leaning on the railing, in the drizzling rain" touched the hearts of hundreds of millions of viewers.
Spring Festival Box Office Miracle: With 4.5 billion RMB, it became the undisputed champion of the 2023 Spring Festival, proving the enormous commercial potential of historical and cultural themes.
Poetry's Revival: After the film's release, "Man Jiang Hong" went viral online. Millions of viewers spontaneously memorized and shared the poem, creating a massive cultural event centered around classical Chinese poetry.
Zhang Yimou's Productivity: At 73, Zhang Yimou delivered two major commercial films in a single year — "Full River Red" and "Under the Light" — demonstrating remarkable creative energy and mastery of commercial genre filmmaking.
