Research paper thumbnail of Behind the Scenes: A Critical Perspective on GenAI and Open Educational Practices

Open Praxis, 2024

Artificial Intelligence (AI) is a rapidly evolving field that is influencing every aspect of life... more Artificial Intelligence (AI) is a rapidly evolving field that is influencing every aspect of life. Generative AI (GenAI) as a sub-branch of AI is used to create content in various formats such as text, images, video, and audio. This paper discusses the implications of GenAI for Open Educational Practices (OEP), highlighting the potential affordances and challenges. GenAI can address the challenges within the OEP by leveraging openness and ethical use. GenAI's "generative" nature and human-like language capability can provide resources such as course material, activities, examples, questions, assessment, and learning outcomes in the context of OEP. With machine learning and deep learning infrastructure, it can support the discoverability and accessibility of open resources by increasing the metadata quality. GenAI can automatically score student assignments, answer their questions, and provide instant feedback to address the lack of interaction and feedback that arises due to the large number of students, especially in massive open online courses (MOOC). On the other hand, GenAI brings challenges such as data privacy and security, copyright, biased outputs, and the generation of false information. The conclusions emphasize the importance of a nuanced approach that considers not only the advantages but also the risks associated with adopting GenAI in the OEP world. Researching and developing how to apply these technologies to education is important to shape the future of education.

social network environments, their social network use habits and potential risky behaviors. The study was conducted in Turkey’s three largest cities (Istanbul, Ankara, and Izmir), and data were gathered with a survey through face-to-face meetings with randomly selected 524 children between 9 and 16 years old who used social networks, and their parents. The survey consisted total of 38 Likert-type questions that 25 of them were asked to children in order to learn about their social network memberships and habits, and 13 of them were asked to parents in order to collect data about their demographics. Data were analyzed to make descriptive and comparative analysis to see tendencies of children while using SNs and some factors influencing
information disclosure. Results show that as children’s age increases, the amount of Internet usage also increases. The most frequently used social network site is Facebook. Although the minimum age to create a profile on most social network sites is 13, results show that nearly half of the children who reported having a profile were younger than that. Most of the children share personal information such as mobile telephone numbers, home addresses and names of family members with anyone who accessed the networking site. The researchers suggest that parent’s and children’s awareness should be raised about the use of social networks to prevent the potential negative consequences of sharing private information. Moreover, social network
developers must take necessary actions to protect children’s online privacy.

encountered by teachers and students, who participated in pilot
implementation of the Increasing Opportunities Improving Technology
Movement (FATIH) project, from the perspective of teachers, students
and schools school principals. To support schools with educational
benefits of information and communication technologies Turkish
government launched the project across Turkey. The sample of the study
consisted of 167 teachers, 667 students and 31 schools school principals,
who participated in the project from four cities on the east region of the
Turkey. The data were collected through Likert scale surveys and group
interviews. The questionnaires were applied online to the teachers,
students and school administrators. After the quantitative data collected,
focused group interviews were conducted with the identified students,
teachers and school administrators. While quantitative data were
subjected to descriptive analyzes, qualitative data were subjected to
content analysis. Although quantitative and qualitative results show some
differences, both qualitative and quantitative findings show that teachers
having difficulty in classroom management, they lost their leader role,
communication and interaction with their students after integration of
information and communication technologies. Regarding problems
encountered by students, it was found that, these technologies cause
many pedagogical challenges such as new classroom technologies’
distracting students’ attention, leading students’ spending most of their
time with them, causing students to become passive learners and use
these technologies for gaming only.

In this sense, the present study investigated the status of students’ tablet computers and e-books use and the reasons why students prefer to use and not use of tablet computers and e-books. Students’ study habits while using e-books were also examined. In the study, which was designed as an instrumental case study, the data was obtained from 100 open education faculty students through semi-structured interview forms by making
calls over the phone. In the analysis of the data, content analysis method was used. Results showed that the majority of the students stated that they use tablet computers and prefer e-books while studying. The main reasons why they prefer e-books are that they can be carried easily and studied everywhere. Considering the students’ learning habits on e-books, four study habits were emerged. Interestingly, most of them study on tablets and take notes on a separate sheet. Eye fatigue and difficulty to edit the e-books are the main reasons of the students who preferred
printed materials

Instead, MOOCs should perhaps be considered as an integrative model for higher education systems, but to do so will require recognition of credentials. Initial experiments of MOOCs were not offer academic credit, but recently there have been some attempts to offer course credit for MOOCs or MOOC-like courses. However, does earning a credit will affect students’ performance and behavior in MOOCs has not been explored closely. Therefore, the aim of this study is to assess the effect of crediting on students’ achievement, perceived intrinsic and extrinsic goal orientations, and perceived course value. A causal comparative research design was applied. Data was collected via 516 responses to an online survey and achievement tests. Three credit conditions were compared: credit bearing, non-credit bearing, and credit careless. ANOVA results showed a significant difference between the credit bearing groups and non-credit bearing groups for all dependent variables. The credit bearing group also scored significantly higher achievement scores than the credit careless group. Credit clearly and significantly affected all dependent variables investigated in this study. Therefore, various possible models can be adopted by higher education institutions to integrate MOOCs as a credit. Further studies can explore the effects of credit on students’ online behaviors, such as engagement with online activities and user events on MOOC platforms.

This article analyzes some of the pre-testing and cognitive interview data in the EU Kids Online study for the difficulties children had in answering questions related to risk, patterns of answers to the final questionnaire provided by the children, and the evidence for providing socially desirable answers to questions related to risk and sensitive information. The format of the administration of the survey in the field was also examined. Age, but not gender, differences were found in understanding, response rates, levels of completion for an open-ended question, and in social desirability influences on answers. The format of administration (CAPI versus PAPI) made no difference in responses to sensitive or risk behavior-related questions, but the presence of others in the room was related to less socially desirable responses. The research contributes to the methodological considerations of survey research with children.
