Understanding CUNY E-Permit
The CUNY E-Permit allows students to request permission from their home college to take courses at other CUNY institutions. Here’s what you need to know:
What is it?
It’s an electronic form available in CUNYfirst. Some students can apply directly, while others must first complete their first semester and earn a qualifying Baruch GPA.
Course Eligibility:
Courses taken through E-Permit must fulfill current degree requirements for graduation from Baruch College.
Residency Requirement:
Baruch students must complete at least
60% of their major courses
and
all capstone courses
at Baruch (this is known as “in-residence”). Transfer and permit credits do
not
count toward the 60% requirement.
Responsibility:
Students are responsible for following all relevant policies, procedures, and requirements currently in place at Baruch College.
Thinking About Taking Courses Outside of CUNY?
If you’re interested in the Outgoing Non-CUNY Permit Application, please pay close attention to the section titled “Taking Courses Outside of CUNY” on this website. This type of request is not considered an E-Permit.
ePermit Application Opening Date
Summer 2026: 04/06/2026
Fall 2026: 04/27/2026
ePermit Application Deadlines
Summer 2026 Session I & III: 06/01/2026
Summer 2026 Session II: 07/06/2026
Fall 2026: 08/21/2026
Understanding Home versus Host College
Home College
– The college where students are matriculated (pursuing a degree).
Host College
– The college where students would take classes in order to transfer the credits back to the home college.
The E-permit Process – Key Points to Know: (more details to follow)
No Guarantees
Submitting an E-Permit does not guarantee approval. Even if approved, it does not reserve or hold a seat in the course at the host college.
Host College Enrollment
Students must check with the host college for enrollment dates, procedures for CUNY students, and course prerequisites.
Timing
Wait until both Baruch (your home college) and the host college open their E-Permit portals before submitting your request.
Application Details
Complete the E-Permit form thoroughly. Only valid and eligible requests will be considered.
Review Process
Once submitted, your request enters a queue for Baruch’s review. Some requests may require a second-level committee review.
Approval & Next Steps
If Baruch approves your request, the form will update to “Approved.” The system will notify the host college to review your request. You must wait for their decision via email or check your CUNYfirst account. Note: the host college’s decision will not appear on the E-Permit form.
Enrollment
If the host college grants registration access, you must self-enroll in the approved course and approved session using CUNYfirst Schedule Builder.
Denied or Cancelled Requests
These will not be reconsidered or reactivated. The host college will not be notified of denied or cancelled requests.
⚠️ Important Reminder:
Approved E-Permits are valid only for:
The specific
host college
The specific
host course
The specific
host session
If applicable, the
home course/equivalent
listed in the approved formAny changes or deviations from the approved request will make the credits invalid. Invalid credits will remain on your record but
will not transfer or count
toward your degree requirements at Baruch.
Eligibility Requirements for ePermit
Before submitting an E-Permit request, please review the following requirements and recommendations to ensure your request is valid and eligible:
1. Who Can Apply
You must be a
matriculated (degree-seeking) student
and eligible to register for the term you’re requesting the E-Permit.
Non-degree students
are
not eligible
for E-Permits. They must apply directly to each CUNY college as non-degree applicants.
2. Graduation Applicants
If you’ve applied for graduation, you
cannot
submit E-Permit requests for terms beyond your final semester at Baruch.
Visit the
Graduation page
for details. If needed, revise your graduation term.
3. Final Semester Caution
We
strongly recommend
not going on E-Permit, Non-CUNY Permit, or Study Abroad during your final semester.
Missing or incomplete grades (INC) could delay or jeopardize your graduation.
4. Break in Attendance
If you’ve missed a Fall or Spring term, you won’t have registration access for future terms.
Submit a
Reentry Form
to reactivate your Baruch account.
5. Academic Standing
Undergraduate students
must have a
Baruch GPA of 2.00 or higher.
Graduate students
must have a
Baruch GPA of 3.00 or higher.
No exceptions and no rounding up.
6. Holds on Your Account
Any
negative service indicators (holds)
that block registration will disqualify your E-Permit request.
Check CUNYfirst and review the section on “Holds and E-Permits” on this site.
7. Policy Compliance
You are responsible for following all Baruch policies, including residency, immunization, and vaccination requirements.
8. Course Prerequisites
You must have completed or be currently enrolled in all required prerequisites.
E-Permit does
not waive
prerequisites at Baruch or the host college.
9. Transfer Students
First-Semester Transfers (e.g., admitted Spring 2023, requesting Spring 2023 E-Permit):
Must meet all requirements except GPA.
Ensure your enrollment appointment has started and both Baruch and host college portals are open.
Email
epermit@baruch.cuny.edu
using your BaruchMail for initial screening.
Sample Email:
I am a First Semester Transfer Student interested in taking an E-Permit during my first semester at Baruch College.
Name: [Your Full Name]
EMPLID: 12345678
Baruch Course: ACC 2101, 3.00 credits (Pre-Business requirement)
Host College Course: ACCT 2001, 3.00 credits
Host College Term: Brooklyn College, Summer 2023, 5W1 session
Transfer Students After First Semester (e.g., admitted Spring 2025, requesting Summer or Fall 2025 E-Permit):
Must complete first semester
Have all grades posted
Earn an eligible Baruch GPA
Meet all other requirements
Note: Submission deadlines are final and apply to all students.
10. First-Semester Students
Most new students (undergraduate and graduate) are not eligible to apply during their first semester.
You must:
Complete your first semester at Baruch
Have all grades posted in CUNYfirst
Earn an eligible Baruch GPA
Meet all other requirements listed above
Exceptions include:
Macaulay Honors College (MHC)
CUNY Baccalaureate (CUNY-BA)
ROTC students
These students must meet all other requirements except GPA.
MHC and CUNY-BA students: Contact your program advisor.
ROTC students: Email epermit@baruch.cuny.edu for initial screening.
ePermit Application Deadlines
E-Permit Deadlines & What You Should Know
You can find E-Permit application deadlines on the
Registration Dates and Deadlines
page.
Exact dates will be posted once confirmed, but typically, deadlines fall
about a week before the session starts
—so check the page regularly for updates.
Important Reminders
The E-Permit portal
closes after the deadline
, and applying late may reduce your chances of getting a decision in time.
Requests are reviewed in the order they’re received, and each CUNY college may have different start dates and deadlines. The
earlier date always takes priority
No Guaranteed Timelines
While we do our best to review requests promptly, we cannot guarantee decisions will be made:
Before registration deadlines
Before courses fill up
Before the session begins
Or before the last day to add/swap classesThanks for your understanding and planning ahead!
Holds in CUNYfirst and ePermits
Check Your Holds Before Submitting an E-Permit
If you have any
active holds
(also called
negative service indicators
) that block registration—like adding or swapping classes—you won’t be eligible for E-Permit approval. These holds can include: Advisement, Athlete, Bursar, Dean of Students, Dismissal, Honors, Library, Orientation, Probation, SPARC Training etc
How to Check for Holds
Go to
CUNYfirst → Student Center → Tasks and Holds
If you see any holds listed, click to view details like:
Which term it affects
The reason for the hold
Who to contact
Steps to resolve it
What Doesn’t Count as a Hold
Some service indicators are positive or neutral and don’t block registration. These include things like Academic Plan Status, Official Major Acceptance (Marxe, Weissman, or Zicklin). Holds placed by other CUNY colleges
don’t affect your Baruch account
or your ability to register at Baruch—unless it’s a
universal hold
(which applies to all CUNY schools).
Credit Limits on ePermits
Combined credit limits, per Session or Term, to take Baruch and e-permit courses are outlined below. Additional credits need credit overload permission.
Fall Term (Regular session): 18 credit units max
Winter Session (session housed in Spring Term): 7 credit units max
Spring Term (Regular session): 18 credit units max
Summer Term with sub-sessions: Two courses per session, up to 8 credit units. Full Summer Session(S3) counts as one S1 and one S2.
Combined allowable Summer sessions can look like: (a) S1, S1, S2, S2 or (b) S3, S1, S2 or (c) S3, S3
If there is insufficient credit “space” in your schedule, there will be no consideration or approval. Adjust as needed before you apply. Students cannot use e-permit approvals to swap out of already enrolled courses at Baruch College. Please drop courses with extra caution, seats are not guaranteed at any college. If you prefer not to take this risk, do not apply. Thank you.
For Example:
Fall Term: 12 Baruch credits + 3 e-permit credits = 15 credits | Eligible for consideration.
Spring Term: Zero Baruch credits + 6 e-permits credits = 6 credits | Eligible for consideration.
Summer Term: 8 Baruch credits in S3 + 3 e-permit credits in S1. | Exceeds allowable combined limit. Not eligible.
Baruch students must complete 60% of courses within the Major as well as all Capstone courses at Baruch College (aka in-residence). Transfer and Permit credits will not count towards the 60% requirement. Review your Degree Works thoroughly.
Credit values between host and home
The number of credit units transferable for each course will be the value assigned to the course at the host college.
For Example:
Host: 3.00 cr. | Home (Baruch): 3.00 cr. >> Transfers back as 3.00 cr.
Host: 3.00 cr. | Home (Baruch): 4.00 cr. >> Transfers back as 3.00 cr.
Host: 4.00 cr. | Home (Baruch): 3.00 cr. >> Transfers back with 3.00 cr. attached to the Home course/equivalent, and the excess 1.00 cr. will be Elective Transfer Credit.
Course Equivalency and Availability
E-permit course equivalency is based on established CUNY Transfer Rules evaluated by the home college(Baruch). Utilize the tools in the
Transfer Explorer
website (aka T-REX) to research course equivalency. E-permits with invalid course equivalency or are ineligible will be denied. (
Tool: * CUNY to CUNY by subject *
For e-permit purposes:
“Transferring From”: The college(s) where the courses will be taught and taken (aka host colleges).
“Transferring To”: The college where the credits will transfer back to (aka home college). Baruch students must select ‘Baruch College’ for this prompt.
Tool: * CUNY to CUNY by course * (Pro Tip: Enter the “known” to find the “unknown”.)
For e-permit purposes:
For example: When the “known” is the home(Baruch) course.
CUNY College–> Baruch College | Subject –> PSY – Psychology | Catalog Number –> PSY 1001 – Gen. Psych. | ***course transfers FROM every other college | Submit
For example: When the “known” is the other(host) college’s course.
CUNY College–> Hunter College | Subject –> PSYCH – Psychology | Catalog Number –> PSYCH 19551: Personal Adjustment | course transfers TO every other college | Submit
First research course equivalency and then course availability to determine if there is an equivalent and whether the other college will be offering that class in the session that you will enroll in.
Use Schedule Builder or CUNY Global Class Search to check course availability.
Do not submit a form for a course that will not be taught. If the host college does not offer the course in the host session as selected in the form, we will deny the request. *Valid and eligible requests only.*
NOTE: Baruch College does not deny if the other college’s course is currently Closed or wait-listed. However, some host colleges might deny registration access if their course is currently Closed.
If you tried, but still need further assistance, email
Epermit@baruch.cuny.edu
. Use your Baruchmail and include your 8-digit EMPLID. Be specific and concise, and share screen captures of the concern so we can better assist you.
Please disregard any mention of the Admissions Transfer Service website or TIPPS to research course equivalency. These are outdated resources.
When to Apply and Processing Time
When to apply
E-permit portal opens for the entire student body- it is not connected to individual enrollment appointments (and not by special request). Typically, Summer and Fall e-permit portals open in mid-April, and Winter & Spring e-permit portal opens in mid-November. The exact dates are determined near the start of registration.
We do not have purview over other college’s e-permit opening dates or deadlines. Review their academic calendar or contact them for their dates.
Students can start to submit e-permit forms when:
Your Baruch Enrollment Appointment has begun and Baruch College’s e-permit portal has officially opened and the other college’s e-permit portal has officially opened.
Locate your Baruch enrollment appointment
CUNYfirst > Student Center > Course Planning and Enrollment > Enrollment Dates > Term & Baruch College > ‘Appointment Begins’
Host Session: Unavailable or ‘error in red’
If ‘Host Session’ is unavailable for the host college you selected, then their portal is not currently open. Contact the host college for their opening date(s) or keep trying until the Host Session appears. Use magnifying glass icons to look up possible options.
Processing time at home(Baruch) college
Initiated e-permits are date & time stamped and will wait in the related queues to be processed. The estimated turnaround time is at/within 10
Business
days (weekends, holidays, and college closings are not business days). E-permit processing time will fluctuate during the open submission period. Students must check the inside of their e-permit forms regularly for any relevant notices or status updates.
If your e-permit does not receive a decision
after then business days
, email
Epermit@Baruch.cuny.edu
to follow up. Otherwise,
please wait
. We do not accept requests for expedited or prioritized services. To help us process at a reasonable time frame, please only submit valid and eligible requests.
Host college processing time is not within our purview, differs among colleges, and is dependent on their current workload. All colleges require ample time to process e-permit requests. We collectively thank you for your patience and understanding.
Checking the Status and Details of Your ePermit
All applicants should check the status of submitted out-going e-permits in their CUNYfirst on a regular basis. There are currently
no
automated or personalized email updates or notifications.
‘9.2 CUNYfirst’ student resources, videos, and guides can be found
here
Follow the instructions as provided here:
Instructions on how to
check epermit status and details
Approved ePermits: What to Expect
Once an ePermit is approved by home college(Baruch):
Status shows
‘Approved’
. Review relevant comments or notes inside the forms.
Conditional approvals
require students to meet certain terms or conditions.
If terms or conditions are unmet by the start of the e-permit session, the approval will automatically become invalid. Do not use invalid e-permits to enroll in classes, and you must cancel the Approvals. Review ‘Cancel E-permits (Dependent on Status)’ tab for the appropriate steps to cancel.
The corresponding ‘PERM (or CUNBA)’ billing/credit code(s) is placed in the student’s Baruch College schedule.
These are not actual courses, so attendance is not expected.
Multiple codes show the total number of approved credit units. (For Example, PERM 1, 2, and 3 indicates six credits approved for e-permit.) E-permit approvals are included in the credit count towards the session or Term’s credit limit. Only the E-permit Unit should add or remove PERM (or CUNBA) codes.
Waiting for host college’s decision on registration access
Students must wait for the other college to grant (or deny) registration access on their end. Some colleges will send decision emails. Typically, these emails will include a good deal of helpful information, do not disregard them. Remember to check your student email Inbox as well as the Junk and Spam folders.
After their approval, you will have a host college Term and Enrollment ‘Appointment Begins’ date & time in CUNYfirst. Make sure to view their date & time and check for Holds in your account before attempting to self-enroll.
Locate your Enrollment Appointment at the host college(s)
CUNYfirst > Student Center > Course Planning and Enrollment > Enrollment Dates > Term & host college > ‘Appointment Begins’
Self-enroll for the host college’s course
After the date & time begins, try to self-enroll for the host course in the Host Session stated specifically in the approved e-permit form only. Use Schedule Builder to enroll. Guides and videos available
here
and
here
Confirm the status of the courses in your schedule; ‘Enrolled’ or ‘Waitlisted’. If you join a waitlist or do not fully enroll for the course(3-4 steps in Schedule Builder), you do not have a seat in the course (aka not Enrolled).
If issues arise during self-enroll, capture the error message, and contact the other college’s E-permit Unit for guidance. All registration issues (enrollment appointment, pre-requisite, credit limit, closed course, etc.) occurring at the host college must be reconciled by them. Baruch College does not have the access or authority to update, override, or influence another college’s policies or procedures. We, the home college, absolutely cannot help you in this regard.
Students cannot save or shift e-permit approvals to a different class, college, Host Session, or Term. Cancel e-permits you will no longer use. If needed, submit a new e-permit for which you will use to enroll. Be mindful of e-permit deadlines.
Baruch students should not finalize enrollment at other colleges ahead of getting final approval by the E-permit Unit in the Registrar Office at Baruch College. To transfer credits back to your Baruch record, it is your sole responsibility to make sure the courses you will enroll in already have matching permit approvals in your account. Any deviation from approved permit forms will automatically become invalid. Invalid or non-approved credits will be for your personal record, will not transfer back to your Baruch record or degree, and we are not mandated to accept them.
Tuition and Payment for ePermit Courses
PERM (or CUNBA) billing codes will appear in the corresponding Baruch schedule upon approval. Billing codes will add e-permit tuition and related fees to your Baruch account immediately. The calculation of e-permit tuition is based on the number of credit units (not hours) assigned to the course at the other college. The host college will request home college(Baruch) for the funds. Pay for all e-permit charges at home college(Baruch).
Pay for other fees pertaining to specific courses directly to the host college. Examples of such fees can be material fees, change of program fees, late registration fees, etc.
Requests for community colleges will NOT generate less tuition per credit unit. The tuition rates are the same as courses enrolled at Baruch College.
Adjustments of ePermit tuition charges
If you do not enroll in any e-permit courses or if you drop the other college’s courses before the first day of the session, you can request to remove the e-permit charges from your Baruch account. Review ‘Cancel E-permits (Dependent on Status)’ tab for more details.
E-permit tuition liability
Drop courses before the session begins to have zero tuition liability. Dropping courses on or after the first day of the session will incur tuition liability in accordance with the host college’s tuition refund/liability calendar. Liability can be 25%, 50%, 75% or 100%. When students drop courses during the ‘W’ withdrawal period, there is no tuition refund. You are liable for 100% of the tuition charges. Pay attention to the academic calendars at the relevant host colleges and home college (Baruch).
Financial Aid and ePermits
Students eligible for financial aid must apply through their home college and are responsible for meeting all academic, course, and credit load requirements.
TAP and ePermits
If you are a candidate for financial aid (especially TAP), you must take courses that are applicable to your Baruch degree. NYS Higher Education Services Corporation (HESC) requires students to take at least 12 credits that count towards their stated degree in order to qualify for full-time TAP. Review Degree Works and make an appointment to speak to an Academic Advisor to review your Baruch degree requirements and progress.
TAP Compliance Form
Degree Works and FACTS are unable to identify e-permit approvals and enrolled host courses as meeting (or not meeting) degree requirements for TAP. You will be flagged as incompliant so long as there is one e-permit billing code in your schedule.
Baruch students with pending TAP awards, have one or more e-permit approvals, and are taking the approved courses must submit a TAP Compliance Form for review. This is required even if your schedule has 12 or more compliant credits of Baruch courses. Your eligibility requires manual review by the TAP Compliance Unit. Submit a TAP Compliance Form as outlined here:
Learn more about TAP Course compliance here.
Financial aid eligibility
Please visit the
Financial Aid website
for more information regarding eligibility for Financial Aid.
Cancel E-permits (Dependent on Status)
Drop courses in CUNYfirst
In general, drop all courses you will no longer attend or no longer wish to take (includes waitlisted courses). Make certain to successfully drop them in your CUNYfirst-Schedule Builder. If you need permission to drop certain courses (we’re NOT referring to PERM codes), please contact the appropriate office at that particular college for assistance. Do not rely on the system or the college to remove you from courses you no longer wish to take.
“PERM (or CUNBA)” codes seen in your Baruch schedule are for e-permit billing and credit count purposes. These are not actual courses. Students do not add or drop these codes. We repeat,
Do Not Try To Add or Drop PERM (or CUNBA) Codes.
Thank you. With proper approval and access, students can add or drop e-permit courses at the other colleges.
Status: Approved
General information
Cancel e-permits with extra caution. Fully cancelled e-permits will no longer be valid and Status changes to ‘Cancelled’. Cancelled (and Denied) e-permits are final. It is not possible to reactivate these forms.
Takes about 2 – 4 BUSINESS days to process. You will receive a Cancellation Complete email from us.
E-permits that are not properly cancelled will stay as ‘Approved’ and your Baruch account will have the proper e-permit charges. Take the necessary steps as soon as possible. We need sufficient time to process all requests and respond to emails.
To cancel multiple approvals, send all information in one single email.
You clicked ‘Cancel’ in Approved e-permits or only dropped the other college’s courses? Not sufficient to reconcile your Baruch account. We need you to send an official email request to cancel.
Want to learn about E-permit tuition liability? Review ‘Tuition and Payment for ePermit Courses’ tab.
Instructions to cancel
‘Enrolled’ or ‘Waitlisted’ in the other college’s courses? Must successfully drop them first before emailing us. Not ‘Enrolled’ or ‘Waitlisted’? Move onto the next steps.
(1)
Login to your Baruchmail email.
(2)
Compose an email with the statement ‘I would like to officially cancel the approved e-permit(s) indicated in this email.’ Provide your 8-digit EMPLID and an image of each Approved e-permit form you want to cancel. Forms are located in your CUNYfirst e-permit account. Need to locate Approved e-permit forms? Review the ‘Checking Status and Details of Your E-permits’ tab.
(3)
Send email to
Epermit@Baruch.cuny.edu
Status: Initiated or Pending Committee Approval
Initiated or Pending e-permits that do not require further consideration, cancel them. Need to locate Approved e-permit forms? Review the ‘Checking Status and Details of Your E-permits’ tab. Inside each Initiated or Pending e-permit form, there will be a ‘Cancel’ button. If the button is not there, you must have clicked it at an earlier date/time already.
If you do not cancel and the forms continue to appear in the e-permit queues, we will review them accordingly. With no issues, the e-permits will receive approval and we will bill the tuition to your Baruch account immediately. Hence, take appropriate action as soon as possible.
Click ‘Cancel’ with caution. This action is final.
Initiated e-permits will instantly update to ‘Cancelled’ after the page refreshes. The e-permit will be removed from the queue.
Pending e-permits will not update immediately, but the ‘Cancel’ button should disappear on your end. That particular form can no longer be approved. Please wait for us to adjust it on our end. The status will update to ‘Cancelled’ soon.
Receiving ePermit Credits and Grades
Grades and credits of approved e-permit courses will transfer back to your Baruch record and these grades WILL BE calculated with/in your Baruch cumulative GPA.
Once again, any deviation from the approved e-permit form, the invalid credits will NOT transfer back.
Requirement Designations
E-permit courses will transfer back with the in-residence Baruch course Requirement Designation.
For Example:
Lehman(host) | ECO 166 (Macro-Economic) | FISR NO
Baruch(home) | ECO 1002 (Macro-Economic) | RLA YES
If you want the host college requirement designation to transfer back to the approved Baruch course/equivalent, you must clearly state your intentions at the time you fill out the e-permit form. Use the Comments section.
Time frame to transfer grades back to home college (Baruch)
After Baruch’s final grading submission deadline, we personally review and transfer back hundreds of grades for students with approved e-permits. Counting from that date, it can take an estimated 10 BUSINESS days to see e-permit credits reflected in student’s CUNYfirst Baruch account. (See academic calendar for important dates.)
Where to find e-permit transfer credits
(1) At the end of your Baruch College Unofficial Transcript – ‘Other Credits’
(2) CUNYfirst > 9.2 Student Center > Academic Records > View Transfer Credit Report (Other Credits: Baruch College)
NOTE: Grades will be posted alongside the approved Baruch course/equivalent, not to the PERM billing codes (except for W, WD, WN, and WU grades–these can post to both).
Other credits and E-permits
CUNY-BA students: Baruch College does not transfer your credits back as direct Baruch equivalents. The appropriate CUNY-BA office would process the transfer of your e-permit grades.
Study Abroad credits: Students must send transcripts directly to the Director of Study Abroad, not the Registrar Office. Visit Baruch College Study Abroad Office’s Study Abroad page for more details.
Incomplete grades
Incomplete grades(INC) will transfer back to your Baruch College record as such. You have a time period, determined by the host college, to resolve that INC grade with the professor. At the end of their applicable time period, unresolved INC grades should update to a Failure of Incomplete (FIN) grade. FIN is punitive and will be calculated as an ‘F’ in your Baruch GPA.
Grade changes or grades posted past the grading deadline
After the host college posts or officially changes your grades in CUNYfirst, it does not update immediately at Baruch. Students must inform us at Epermit@Baruch.cuny.edu to review & adjust their Baruch record accordingly.
Credit values between host and home
The number of credit units transferable will be the value assigned to the course at the host college.
For Example:
Host: 3.00 cr. | Home (Baruch): 3.00 cr. >> Transfers back 3.00 cr.
Host: 3.00 cr. | Home (Baruch): 4.00 cr. >> Transfers back 3.00 cr.
Host: 4.00 cr. | Home (Baruch): 3.00 cr. >> Transfers back with 3.00 cr. attached to the home course/equivalent and the excess 1.00 cr. will be elective credit.
DegreeWorks and E-permits
Students attempt e-permit courses at other CUNY colleges. Baruch College Degree Works (online advisement tool) updates periodically and will only pull information from the Baruch CUNYfirst record. E-permit uses “PERM” billing/credit codes in place of the actual Baruch class that would transfer back after completing the host courses (passing / failing / withdrawal / INC grades all transfer back).
Passing grades are not posted to “PERM” codes (withdrawal grades are posted). In Degree Works, PERM codes listed under the ‘Insufficient Grades’ section have no negative impacts on the student’s GPA or record. These codes will remain in CUNYfirst for record-keeping purposes (billing and credit-count) indefinitely.
If you notice any errors in CUNYfirst or Degree Works after grades have transferred back, then you may follow up with us at
Epermit@Baruch.cuny.edu
Common Issues to Avoid | Reasons for Denial
Here is a checklist of common issues you should avoid in your e-permit forms and Baruch record.
All Denied (or Cancelled) e-permit forms are final. It is not possible to reactivate these forms. Please strive to do it right the first time around. Thank you.
(1) The form is missing the Baruch home course/equivalent
Review ‘Add E-permit (Detailed Steps and Images)’ tab. Follow the instructions in the guide that matches your Career & Program. For Example: undergraduate OR graduate OR CUNYBA
NOTE: CUNY-BA cohort is not required to provide Baruch Home Course. E-permit credits will not transfer back as a direct Baruch College course/equivalent. CUNY-BA students DO NOT enter a Baruch equivalent.
(2) Credit load concern
Review ‘Credit Limits and E-permits’ tab.
(3) Already enrolled (or have a seat) in the Baruch course
You already have a seat or is currently taking the course(or a version/equivalent of the course) you are requesting for e-permit? Do not apply.
Students should not enroll in equivalent courses at multiple colleges no matter if it is in the same or different sessions. Take the course at Baruch College or drop it from your schedule and then submit the e-permit for consideration. Drop courses with extra discretion. E-permits do not guarantee permission or seats at any college. For that reason, we highly recommend that students keep their seats at Baruch College.
(4) Received failing grade in previous attempt(s) at Baruch College
The F-Repeat Policy does not apply to courses taken or completed on e-permit. If you intend to replace failing grades (F or FIN) you received at Baruch College, you must retake the same courses at Baruch College. F-Replacement at Baruch College is not applicable to failing grades earned or received outside of Baruch College. More information about “Repeating Courses” is available in the Baruch College Undergraduate Bulletin.
If you are NOT looking to replace failing grades, clearly state your intentions in your e-permit form. Enter the following statement in the Comments section before you click submit.
“I understand this e-permit will not replace the failing grades from my previous attempts for this Baruch course. The failing grades will remain in my transcripts and will also be calculated with/in my Baruch GPA.”
(5) Permit Type inaccuracy
Review ‘Add E-permit (Detailed Steps and Images)’ tab. Follow the instructions in the guide that matches your Career & Program. For Example: undergraduate OR graduate OR CUNYBA
(6) Requests for BUS 2000, COM 3021, MTH 1023, MTH 2003, MTH 2009, MTH 2205 or MTH 2207
Do not request these courses for e-permit. Currently, there are no courses evaluated at other CUNY colleges to be equivalent to the stated Baruch courses (aka no equivalency).
Baruch students must complete these courses at Baruch College.
(7) Attempted the Baruch course three times or requesting in excess of the final attempt
E-permits will not be issued for courses that have been attempted three times at Baruch College or for which have transferred into Baruch College totaling to three attempts (such as from e-permits). An appeal for a fourth (or final) attempt is required, but approval is not a guarantee. Do not request e-permit in excess of the final attempt. It will not receive approval. Review Baruch’s Three Repeat Policy.
(8) The Baruch course is in progress, has earned a passing or INC grade, or attempted with no grade posted
Requests for courses that have earned passing or an incomplete grade(INC) will not receive approval. This policy also applies to an INC grade assigned to a pre-requisite for the course you want to take on e-permit. Students must take/passed all pre-requisites prior to submitting e-permit requests.
Typically, requests for courses that have earned passing grades of “A” to “D”, “P” or “CR” will not receive approval. Such courses are non-repeatable. Review Baruch’s Three Repeat Policy.
(9) Requests for Capstone courses
Students must complete all Capstone courses at Baruch College (in-residence); Major, Minor or College Option. Review your Degree Works audit for more details.
(10) One e-permit form has multiple rows ||| Multiple forms for the same Baruch course
Typically, each e-permit form should have only one row consisting of one host college and one course.
You may add a second row for science courses to enter corresponding Lecture and Lab components in one single e-permit form. Only make use of this when the host college’s Lecture and Lab courses are separate credited components. (For Example: Lecture is 3.00 cr. & Lab is 1.00 cr.)
If you submit multiple separate forms for the same Baruch home course, only one request will be considered for approval. We will review them in order of receipt. The first that is valid and eligible will receive approval while the remaining requests will be denied. Only select your FIRST-choice college and pre-check for OPEN sections beforehand.
(11) Applied for graduation and e-permit is for KBCC / LGCC / Guttman CC
Firstly, we recommend students to not go out on e-permit, Non-CUNY permit, or study abroad during their final semester. If there are missing or INC grades (aka, open records), it could jeopardize your graduation.
Secondly, if your request is for Spring Term to one or more of the above-mentioned community colleges, please note Spring Term degree conferral date is June 1. Graduation audits need to be completed before the conferral date (June 1). Kingsborough, LaGuardia, and Guttman CC Spring sessions end in mid-June. Baruch College will not graduate students with open records such as missing or INC grades.
Furthermore, if you happen to take elective credits on e-permit, especially in your final semester, consider the following points before you apply.
– All e-permit approvals/credits exist and are applicable in your Baruch record.
– All e-permit grades (passed / failing / INC) can have an influence on your Baruch GPA.
– If INC grades or no grades are reflected in your Baruch account, these open records could jeopardize your graduation for your current degree.
If you move forward with the enrollment into these elective courses, you are taking full responsibility for any negative effects this may have on your current record and/or your eligibility to graduate.
Want to Take Pre-requisites on E-permit? You Need to Know This.
You may take certain pre-requisite courses on e-permit, but these courses do not satisfy requisite requirements for registration into next sequence courses until a passing grade is officially posted to your Baruch record. The different college’s systems do not interconnect in such a way to perform requisite checks across different college’s courses. Typically, e-permit grades & credits will have to transfer back to your Baruch CUNYfirst record first in order to enroll for courses in the next sequence or to further request e-permits for courses in the next sequence. You cannot save seats at any college. Therefore, you will accept this risk at your own discretion.
Likewise, when you successfully enroll in next sequence courses because you have a seat in the pre/co-requisite at Baruch College, but then decides to drop the pre/co-requisite and take it on e-permit, CUNYfirst will determine that you no longer meet the enrollment requirements to keep the seats in the next sequence courses. It is highly possible that the Post Enrollment Requisite Check will flag the next sequence courses in your account and drop them from your schedule before the session begins.
Taking Courses Outside of CUNY
Baruch matriculated students may take some courses at a Non-CUNY college to fulfill current degree requirements. Non-CUNY permits
are not
permissible to any community college, no matter if it is a SUNY or private institution.
If your intention is to transfer credits back to your Baruch record, carefully review and fill out the Outgoing Non-CUNY Permit Application for review. Download an Outgoing Non-CUNY Permit Application from Registrar website. Make sure to review the two-page form carefully—the requirements and application.
If you want to take Non-CUNY courses for your own personal reasons, apply to that college directly as a Non-Degree student. Under this status, you do not need to notify us. This would mean that these credits are not eligible to transfer back to your Baruch record/degree.
Office of the Registrar Forms Page
Registration Applications –> Outgoing Non-CUNY Permit
Students fill out the applicable sections, then send it to the respective Department Chairperson in order to have him/her evaluate a Baruch equivalent and sign the form. Course description and syllabi from the Non-CUNY institution must be included when you contact the Department’s Chairperson for review.
Graduate students must consult with their Graduate program’s advisor about taking courses on permit outside of CUNY. The advisor will determine whether taking graduate courses on permit to have the credits transfer back to Baruch College is permissible. Include your advisor’s approval (if granted) when sending the completed form for Registrar Office final approval. If not approved by your program office, no further consideration will be given.
Submit the completed forms to the Registrar Office and allow 3 – 5 business days for processing. We will notify students at their Baruchmail of the decision (or any issues) pertaining to the application. Students must send applications to us before the related deadlines and prior to enrollment in courses at other colleges. Review the
Registration Dates and Deadlines
Calendar for Session deadlines.
Important:
Baruch students should not finalize enrollment at other colleges ahead of getting final approval by the E-permit Unit in the Registrar Office at Baruch College. To transfer credits back to your Baruch record, it is your sole responsibility to make sure the courses you will enroll in already have matching permit approvals in your account. Any deviation from approved permit forms will automatically become invalid. Invalid or non-approved credits will be for your personal record, will not transfer back to your Baruch record or degree, and we are not mandated to accept them. Please also review the ‘Recommended vs. Official Permit Permissions’ tab.
Non-CUNY course grades will be posted to your Baruch record if you receive at least the minimum grade stated in the requirements page, but it will NOT be calculated with your Baruch GPA. It will neither help nor hurt your Baruch GPA. However, keep in mind there are some degree requirements that do require a minimum GPA. If unmet, this can greatly affect your progress in the Major, Minor, or degree. If courses fall into these categories, please consider them before applying for the permits. Baruch students must complete 60% of courses within the Major as well as all Capstone courses at Baruch College (aka in-residence). Transfer and Permit credits will not count towards the 60% requirement.
Please pay for Non-CUNY permit courses (tuition and fees) directly to that other college. Since these charges are separate from your Baruch tuition & fees, if you have any concerns about whether financial aid would cover these Non-CUNY courses, please direct these concerns to the Baruch Financial Aid office.
Recommended vs. Official Permissions
Verbal or email permissions from other offices or staff are NOT official approvals for permit credits to transfer back to Baruch College. If you were recommended or advised to take courses on a permit, please apply accordingly and wait for a final decision from the E-permit Unit in the Registrar Office. Review this entire website and pay special attention to ‘Add E-permits (Detailed Steps and Images)’ and/or ‘Taking Courses Outside of CUNY’ sections for more details.
NOTE: New Transfer Student’s credit evaluation is a different process than a Baruch College student interested in taking classes at other. Baruch students have an obligation to follow Baruch College rules and regulations if the intent is to transfer outside credits back to your Baruch record. For example, do not believe that going back to the college you previously attended to take courses will receive automatic approval. If you cannot find the answers to your concerns on this e-permit website, we welcome you to email
Epermit@Baruch.cuny.edu
for your specific concerns.
Required Business Courses on E-permit
Outgoing ePermits are allowed for required business courses at the 3xxx level or above only when the requests are to complete the courses at an AACSB-accredited institution.
The academic calendar for Host ePermit college may not be in sequence with Baruch’s academic calendar. This may delay the registration process for next-level courses.

What is Reverse Transfer?
Reverse Transfer (for CUNY students)
FAQ
“A student who has transferred to a baccalaureate institution from a community college without first earning an associate degree might still be able to earn that associate degree. With Reverse Transfer, credits earned at the baccalaureate institution that meet and complete the academic credentials of the associate degree are “transferred back” from the four-year institution to the two-year institution.”
As described, Reverse Transfer does not utilize e-permits to go back to your previous community college to finish your associate degree. Students must complete the relevant course(s) at their current four-year institution.
As already mentioned on this website, credits are not eligible to transfer back when Baruch students finalize enrollment at other colleges with no matching pre-approval from the E-permit Unit in the Registrar Office. Invalid or non-approved credits will be for your personal record only, will not transfer back to your Baruch record or degree, and we are not mandated to accept them.
