Overview

"Three-Body" (三体) is a 2023 Chinese science fiction television series produced by Tencent Video (Penguin Pictures), The Three-Body Universe, and Linghe Cultural Media. Adapted from Liu Cixin's Hugo Award-winning novel "The Three-Body Problem," the series is directed by Yang Lei with Tian Liangliang serving as chief screenwriter. The ensemble cast features Zhang Luyi, Yu Hewei, Chen Jin, Wang Ziwen, Lin Yongjian, and Li Xiaoran.

The series premiered on CCTV-8 on January 15, 2023, with simultaneous streaming on Tencent Video and Migu Video. Running 30 episodes at approximately 40 minutes each, "Three-Body" is the first live-action adaptation of Liu Cixin's "Remembrance of Earth's Past" trilogy. Filming spanned 126 days beginning in July 2020. The series received an 8.7 out of 10 on Douban, ranking among the highest-rated Chinese-language dramas of 2023.

Synopsis

In 2007, nanomaterials scientist Wang Miao (Zhang Luyi) is drawn by detective Shi Qiang (Yu Hewei) into a series of bizarre suicides within the scientific community. Their investigation leads them to a mysterious organization called "The Frontiers of Science" and a virtual reality game titled "Three-Body." As they dig deeper, Wang Miao and Shi Qiang uncover a staggering secret hidden behind human civilization — an alien world called "Trisolaris" from the Alpha Centauri triple-star system is heading toward Earth.

The narrative weaves through three intertwined timelines: the present-day mystery of scientists dying under strange circumstances, the historical thread of Ye Wenjie (Chen Jin as older, Wang Ziwen as younger) transmitting a signal into space from the Red Coast Base during the Cultural Revolution, and the virtual realm of the "Three-Body" game where Chinese historical figures from King Wen of Zhou to Qin Shi Huang dramatize the rise and fall of Trisolaran civilizations.

Wang Miao's nanomaterial invention, "Flying Blade," becomes humanity's key weapon against the Trisolaran threat. In the climactic confrontation with the Earth-Trisolaris Organization (ETO), humanity uses the Flying Blade to slice through the ETO's flagship "Judgment Day" in the Panama Canal, retrieving critical intelligence about the Trisolaran civilization.

Production

Filming began in June 2020 at Hengdian World Studios, with additional location shooting at Ningbo Museum, the Beijing Electron-Positron Collider, the National Astronomical Observatories Miyun Station, and the Beijing Planetarium. The crew traveled to Heihe City in Heilongjiang Province in November 2020 and wrapped production in December. The entire shoot lasted 126 days.

Many scenes were filmed at real scientific facilities: the accelerator base at Beijing Electron-Positron Collider, the National Center for Nanoscience, and the Asia Defense Council Operations Center at Ningbo Museum. The "Judgment Day" ship was modeled on the "Zhonggu 8" vessel from Zhonggu Shipping. The Panama Canal sequence was recreated using river and forest footage from Zhejiang Province due to the pandemic, and the sliced hull of Judgment Day was constructed from hundreds of compressed steel strips assembled on-site.

The first trailer was released in November 2021, followed by a "Dust" trailer in June 2022. The official premiere date was announced on January 12, 2023. The theme song "Endless Sailing" was performed by Zhou Shen. On February 3, 2023, alongside the finale preview screening, Tencent Video announced plans for a sequel "Three-Body II: The Dark Forest" and a spin-off series "Three-Body: Da Shi."
