Plot Summary

On October 5, 2011, two Chinese cargo ships are attacked on the Mekong River in the Golden Triangle region. All 13 crew members are killed. Thai military officials claim the sailors were involved in drug trafficking, sparking outrage across China.

The Chinese Ministry of Public Security assembles a special task force led by narcotics captain Gao Gang (Zhang Hanyu). Embedded in the Golden Triangle for years, intelligence operative Fang Xinwu (Eddie Peng) provides crucial on-the-ground intelligence.

As the investigation unfolds, the true mastermind emerges: Naw Kham, the notorious drug lord who controls the Golden Triangle's narcotics empire. To bring him to justice, Gao Gang leads his team deep into hostile territory — through jungles, drug dens, and gunfights — in a breathless cross-border pursuit.

Filming took place in Thailand and Malaysia with helicopters, speedboats, and military vehicles to recreate the intensity of the real anti-narcotics mission.

The action sequences are the film's standout feature — from street chases to jungle firefights, from speedboat pursuits to underground drug lab raids, every scene maintains relentless tension and visual impact.

Cultural Significance

Operation Mekong is a landmark in the commercialization of Chinese patriotic cinema. It proved that fact-based films about real national events can be both serious in theme and thrillingly entertaining.

The film launched Dante Lam's action trilogy, followed by Operation Red Sea (2018), which grossed 3.652 billion yuan and became a milestone in Chinese war cinema.
