Mildred Dresselhaus might not have been a household name, but she certainly made a name for herself in the engineering and science community. She was the first woman to win the National Medal of Science in Engineering in 1990; the first solo recipient of the one-million-dollar Kavli prize, honoring scientists for breakthroughs in astrophysics, nanoscience and neuroscience; and a recipient of the Enrico Fermi Award, one of the most prestigious government awards in science. Dresselhaus was an IEEE Life Member, the first woman to receive an IEEE Founders Medal, and in 2015, the IEEE Medal of Honor.
