FM Organization
Facilities Management (FM) is responsible for the buildings, grounds and energy management needs of the University of Minnesota Twin Cities campus. FM works to provide a safe, reliable and welcoming campus in support of the University's mission of teaching, research and outreach.
FM's responsibilities include over 25 million square feet of space across 280+ buildings on 1,200 acres in the Twin Cities, as well as various support services for the Duluth, Morris, and Crookston campuses.
FM is organized into four primary service areas:
Central Services
Central Services comprises several teams that maintain campus grounds, manage waste and recycling, provide construction services, and support district operations. Specialty shops--including locksmith, signs, design and the hazardous materials program--are also part of this unit.
District Custodial and Maintenance Operations
This is the largest portion of FM. Five operational districts--East Bank, Health Sciences, HRA, St. Paul, and West Bank--provide cross-functional building maintenance and custodial services within their geographic areas. These districts receive additional support from Central Services and Energy Management. This unit also manages research facility support services and the FM Call Center.
Energy Management
Energy Management maintains the infrastructure and utilities that heat, cool and light the Twin Cities campus. The team leads energy conservation efforts that help reduce the University’s carbon footprint and provides mechanical, electrical, civil and building automation engineering support for University-wide assets.
Office of Sustainability
The Office of Sustainability provides leadership, coordination, and planning for sustainability initiatives on the Twin Cities campus. As part of Facilities Management, the office collaborates with departments and units across the University to advance the environmental and social sustainability goals.
