The Mogao Caves are located near Dunhuang, Gansu Province. They are one of the world's greatest treasuries of Buddhist art. Construction began during the Sixteen Kingdoms period. There are 735 caves, 45,000 square meters of murals, and 2,415 painted sculptures. Inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1987.
