My name is Elliot Phipps and I am a postgraduate student at Cardiff Metropolitan University studying MSc Sport Broadcasting. During the recent summer, I graduated with a First-Class Bachelor’s degree in Sport Media while working as a Freelancer in the field. However, during the month of August, I had the experience of a lifetime that I will never forget.
The MSc Sport Broadcasting Programme Director, Joe Towns, invited me and other undergraduate and postgraduate students on a teams call with the International Sports Broadcasting (ISB) company, based in Madrid, Spain. They were looking for students to join their team for their broadcast of the 2025 World Games in Chengdu, China. A month later, I received the exciting news that I was heading off to China to work as a Camera Assistant alongside nine other Cardiff Met students.
I would have never had this incredible opportunity had it not been for my academic studies at Cardiff Metropolitan University. Sport is my passion, with football, table tennis and golf being my three favourite sports. Having studied and learnt so much about the Sport Media industry during my undergrad degree, such as how social media works, how sport is marketed and how the technical aspects work, it felt like now was the right time to get even more hands-on experience.
The Sport Media degree was excellent in balancing studies and real-world, practical experiences. I have had the pleasure to co-lead the Cardiff Met RFC and WRFC’s social media while helping the Welsh Rugby Union (WRU) with their social media during their home 2025 Six Nations games which included me being pitch side at the Principality Stadium!
At the World Games I was a Camera Assistant. My role was to assist the camera operators in the team. The weather was very hot and humid, therefore I played a crucial role in providing them with fluids and snacks! I was also able to assist by cable bashing for the handheld on-field camera. I was very fortunate to be included in this team as this was a very experienced team. The sports we were broadcasting were the Lacrosse Sixes and Flag Football. These two sports were being trialled to make its Olympic Games debut at the 2028 LA games.
My favourite part of the experience was the people. The team were so friendly and helpful as well as the people of China. Also, being able to share this experience with fellow students was very special as I felt at home from day one. This has made me want to pursue my dreams further of travelling the world while being involved in sport. I can not wait to hone my skills further on the MSc Sport Broadcasting course this year!
In this industry, you have really got to take every opportunity that comes your way. Say ‘yes’ to everything and network with as many people as possible. The more people you know, the more doors that are going to be opened for you.
