Hello! My name is Ella, and I am a former psychology student from Cardiff Met. I recently relocated to London after securing a place in the NHS graduate program as a mental health practitioner.
I chose Cardiff Met for my studies because I loved the city and felt a strong connection to the university during my visits. I valued the support that they offered throughout my degree, which has been instrumental in my personal and professional growth.
Reflecting on my time at university, I am incredibly grateful for the opportunities I had, particularly during my second and third years when I took an optional placement module. This experience allowed me to apply my knowledge in a real-world setting and enter the industry with confidence and enthusiasm. Engaging in activities I am passionate about has always been important to me, and these placements were a perfect way to explore that during my studies. This was a game changer for me and would highly recommend others to consider placement modules.
The graduate program is two years long, during which I will learn about the NHS and the role of psychology within a multidisciplinary team. Competing against 300 applicants to secure this position was challenging, and I am so proud of my achievement. The careers service at Cardiff Met played a vital role in helping me build the skills necessary to succeed in interviews and job applications. I highly recommend utilising these resources while studying as it will really benefit you in the long run. In particular, the professional development module in my psychology degree was invaluable; it helped me craft a strong CV, refine my cover letter writing, and enhance my LinkedIn profile—all of which contributed to my success in securing a graduate position.
Looking ahead, I aspire to advance in the field of psychology and eventually apply for clinical doctorate training. For now, I am focused on gaining relevant experience and expanding my knowledge within the sector. I am proud to be an alumnus of Cardiff Met and immensely thankful for all the opportunities that arose during my degree. It is a fantastic university with lots of resources, and the support from staff and peers is truly remarkable. My top tip would be to always say yes to any opportunity that comes your way even if it scares you and give it your all!
