My name is Rebecca Hannibal and I am a first class graduate with honours from Cardiff Metropolitan University. I studied BSc Sports Management in my 3 years at Cardiff Met and thoroughly enjoyed the course and extracurricular activities. Initially I was drawn to the university as the degree was exactly what I wanted to learn about. Being an international athlete in Bobsleigh, the set-up within Cardiff was ideal for myself not only training wise but opportunity wise with the networking connections available. The Sport Management degree is exceptional. Every module is unique and shapes the way you perceive the sporting landscape. It also allows a holistic view to be taken before you narrow down in your final year into the specific area you want to understand more about.
During my studies I was fortunate to undertake a placement at Sport Cardiff working in the Disability realm. This helped broaden my understanding of Sport Management at a recreational level as the placement involved a lot of schools visits and event planning. Throughout the duration of my final year, I also undertook an internship at The Welsh Amateur Boxing Association. This internship gave me insight into how a National Governing Body operates within all departments. Within this role I was able to deliver National level events, learn key administration tasks, interact and support clubs and understand the support network behind the elite athletes.
Since graduating, I have obtained a position as Competitions and Events Coordinator at Tennis Wales. In this role, I lead all recreational competitions across Wales, including primary and secondary school engagement, parks leagues, and disability events. I have also had the privilege of supporting international events that we host in Wrexham as well as being Tournament Organiser for the Visually Impaired National Finals in 2023. Without my Sport Management degree, this would have seemed out of reach, however I often find myself leaning back on key fundamentals I learnt throughout my time at Cardiff Met to help support the decisions I make daily. In the future I want to remain within a National Governing Body progressing upwards into a Head of Department role where I can make greater impact. I also want to develop my interpersonal skills alongside this by earning qualifications in leadership and communication.
My advice for future students would be to chase opportunities! Cardiff is a hub of sporting excellence and it’s worthwhile to put yourself out there.
