What is the problem you're trying to solve?
edit
Problems with the status quo:
It is not always possible to have an experienced Wikimedian be personally involved in introducing student editors and potential GLAM contributors to Wikimedia, which results in new editors making preventable mistakes or not knowing where to go for help.
Editathon and workshop participants, education program classes and GLAM contributors could benefit from concise introductions to Wikimedia and its community norms.
Editathons, which may last only a few hours, would benefit from having new contributors getting a
quick
introduction to Commons or Wikipedia so that the new contributors can maximize the amount of focus that they have on content creation, and so that experienced Wikimedians who are present can focus their attention on answering questions instead of repeating the same basic information at multiple events.
A single standardized and modular training video doesn't currently exist. This means that new editors may need extensive one-on-one mentoring that is labor-intensive for the small community of expert volunteers. If this video is produced and widely distributed, the need for one-on-one mentoring of new Wikimedians and the need for personal involvement of high-skill Wikimedians in instructing individual and groups of new contributors should be alleviated, providing relief to the volunteers and more efficient use of everyone's time.
What is your solution?
edit
Create collection of video modules that introduce potential education program students and GLAM contributors to Wikimedia, particularly Commons and English Wikipedia. Motivate the viewers to want to contribute constructively to Wikimedia, and teach them basic and intermediate-level participation skills.
Project goals
edit
Higher quality participation by new Wikimedians, more extensive content production by new Wikimedians, and decreased workloads for Wikimedian volunteer mentors.
Project plan
edit
Activities
edit
Create instructional and motivational video modules that can be individually remixed, updated and translated as needed, and scripts for the modules that allows for subtitle translation into multiple languages.
Separate playlists of modules may be recommended for GLAM and education contributors.
Some modules may have suggested simple activities, either at the end of the module or during the module with suggestions to pause the video at certain points. Viewers can do those activities, or continue straight through.
A simplified version of the video content, perhaps a single module created from segments that will also be included in more detailed modules, may be produced for editathon participants so that a maximum of 20 minutes are spent on introducing participants to Wikimedia and so that their time on content creation is maximized. More detailed subject-specific modules can be appended to the short video as needed, or viewers may choose to view all of the more detailed modules.
Budget
edit
Writing, direction, community outreach, marketing, and evaluation: estimate 200 hours (averaging about 33 hours per month over 6 months, although some months may have more activity than others, and it's possible that we could accelerate the project into fewer months) at $30 per hour ($6000)
Video editor: estimate 50 hours at $50 per hour ($2500)
Producer: in-kind support from Victor Grigas
Video editing software
($110)
(see note on the talk page for more details about software and equipment purchases)
Price update: $109.31 including tax and free shipping
Additional computer memory ($0)
Audio-Technica AT2005USB Cardioid Dynamic USB/XLR Microphone:
currently $79.00 + tax from B&H = ($86.51)
Price update: $74.45 including tax and free shipping
Audio-Technica ATH-M40x Monitor Headphones (Black): currently $99 + tax from B&H = ($108.41)
Sony MDR-7506: $87.59
Total amount:
$8804.92
Update as of 8 May 2016: $8771.35.
The May 8, 2016 $33.57 decrease in price is due to changes in software and equipment, including substituting a slightly less expensive headphone set
Community engagement
edit
Milestones:
Periodic outreach at each stage of the target projects (Commons and English Wikipedia, and possibly translated outreach to other language Wikipedias) regarding the script outline, script drafts, and modules as each are produced to ask for feedback.
Venues:
Periodic outreach on Commons, English Wikipedia, Outreach wiki, Wiki Education Foundation, WMF's Global Education Program, the Education mailing list, the GLAM mailing list, the Editor Engagement mailing list, village pumps, the Wikimedia Blog, the
Signpost
, the
This Month in GLAM
newsletter, the
This Month in Education
newsletter, the GLAM-Wiki Global Facebook group, and the Wikipedia Education Program Facebook group.
Consider holding Google Hangouts and/or IRC Office Hours if there is community interest.
Hold discussion sessions at the Wikimedia Conference in Berlin in 2016 and at WikiConference USA in 2016 (my travel to both events is already accounted for unless there is a change of plans; I will travel to Berlin as a representative of Cascadia Wikimedians, and WikiConference USA 2016 is likely to be in Seattle so no travel will be necessary for me.)
Sustainability
edit
The video will be playable and useful into the infinite future. Because of the publication of the script, translated subtitles can be made in multiple languages. Also, because of the modular nature of the video, individual modules can be updated or added as needed with relatively low time and expense.
Measures of success
edit
Need target-setting tips?
Note: in addition to your project-specific measures of success, you will also be asked to report on some
Global Metrics
at the end of your final report. Please keep this in mind as you plan, and we'll
support you
as you begin your project.
At least 5,000 views of the video modules within one year after publication, at least 20,000 cumulative views of the video modules within two years after publication, and at least 50,000 cumulative views of the video modules within three years after publication. (Classes and workshops may have multiple participants. Each individual participant counts as one view for purposes of this goal. One way to estimate attendance at events where the modules are shown to more than one viewer is to ask that instructors and trainers inform us when and where the video segments are used, the number of attendees, and the feedback about the video modules.)
Positive feedback received on feedback forms; a link to the feedback form will be displayed in the video.
Positive community sentiment from experienced Wikimedians.
Positive sentiment from educators, students in education programs, and GLAM representatives who watch the video in the first 3 months after publication and are individually asked for their feedback.
At least two success stories, one each from a Wiki Ed Foundation supported class and one from a GLAM organization, about how the video helped them to achieve their goals or motivated them to contribute.
Use cases: education programs, GLAMs, workshops, and editathons

Participants
edit
Pine will be the script writer, director, and primary outreach coordinator for the project. Pine became a registered editor in 2011, and now has more than 1,000 edits on Commons, more than 8,000 edits on English Wikipedia, and is an administrator on the Outreach Wiki. Pine has co-led Wikipedia workshops at the University of Washington and has existing connections with educators, librarians, Wiki Ed Foundation staff, WMF Education staff, WMF Learning and Evaluation staff, and WMF Communications staff that may be helpful in designing and evaluating the video, in addition to his
roots
(get it?) in the community of experienced Wikimedia contributors.
Victor Grigas will be the producer. He is currently the "storyteller" for WMF Communications, and has produced several videos for WMF.
The editor will be selected by Victor. It is important that the video be edited in a way that allows for easy subtitling, and easy replacement of modules in the video.
Sage Ross from the Wiki Ed Foundation will be an adviser on this project.
Maria Cruz will help with the Spanish translation.
DerHexer will help with the German translation.
Tsoukali will help with beta testing the videos from the perspective of a relatively new Wikimedian, and with translation into Greek.
Dulacia may help with production and might help with a Spanish-language interview that is included in one of the modules
Vojtěch Dostál will help with the Czech translation.
Reem Al-Kashif will help with the Arabic translation.
Lilitik22 and David Saroyan will help with the Armenian translation.
Jnanaranjan sahu
will help with the Odia (Oriya) translation, and might also help with the Hindi translation.
Frhdkazan will help with the Russian translation.
Nickispeaki will help with the Ukrainian translation.
Milimetric will help with the Romanian translation.
Misaochan will assist in reviewing the modules that are applicable to Commons.

An updated general introductory video like the one proposed here would be a huge help for
Wikipedia Education Programs worldwide
, especially if subtitling/
closed captioning
is available in many languages, as is the case with
File:¿Qué es Wikipedia?.ogv
. Thanks to
Pine
Sage
Victor
and everyone else who may be helping to make this happen. Please reach out to me if I can provide any feedback or support. Sincerely,

Always relevant, important and necessary. Producing communication tools also is an investment in thinking about who are we interested in engaging and how we talk to people. I added some comments also in the discussion page, but I have no doubts that these kind of initiatives need to be supported, experimented and multiplied. We can't consider fundraising the only time we really talk to people. --

I think that the video series should be filmed in several languages at the same time, to improve impact. This would require to gather proper speakers of several languages. A worldwide representation of speakers could be costly, unless they can be found in a cosmopolitan city. --

As VisualEditor resources are scarce, I support the funding of this project. We intend to translate subtitles to Czech, to be used in the Czech education program.

-- At its most basic, the WMF projects are volunteer endeavors. We need to make it as easy as possible for volunteers to contribute productively to our projects. This video series will help make that happen.

We definitely need high-quality videos about the basics of Wikimedia projects for almost any kind of outreach. It would be also great to "open-source" the process so that more people can collaborate and give feedback as the videos are being produced. --
