GSBA: Capitol Hill is tackling Safety in the neighborhood
Capitol Hill’s commitment to public safety just got stronger with the addition of Jen Carl (she/her) as GSBA’s new Neighborhood Safety Coordinator. Funded through the city’s latest public safety initiatives, this role has already become a vital part of connecting local businesses, residents, and city departments to address safety concerns in the heart of the neighborhood. Since stepping into the position, Jen has brought her diverse background in criminal justice, community outreach, and advocacy to the forefront—building relationships, supporting impacted business owners, and working to ensure Capitol Hill remains a safe, welcoming place for all.

About the Neighborhood
Capitol Hill has the highest concentration of small businesses in Washington State. It is home to hundreds of small businesses including some of Seattle’s best restaurants and shopping.
This neighborhood is one of the city’s most economically and culturally important business districts, as well as Seattle’s historic epicenter for the LGBTQ business and residential community.

Hill Talks
Quarterly in-person networking opportunities where civic and community engagement intertwine. These gatherings bring Capitol Hill business owners and operators together to strengthen connections and collaboration. Annual HillTalks include a Civic Engagement reception with primary election candidates and a Who’s Who on Capitol Hill event highlighting major neighborhood organizations and initiatives.

GSBA Capitol Hill’s response to ongoing neighborhood safety concerns is a monthly facilitated online conversation with Capitol Hill stakeholders. These calls provide updates on safety initiatives, share important community information, and highlight opportunities to stay connected.

Safety Learning Series
The Safety Learning Series is a monthly training program focused on building practical, real-world safety knowledge for Capitol Hill businesses, staff, and community members.
Hosted by Jen Carl, each session is different and will bring together invited safety officials, community organizations, and local leaders to share tools, best practices, and actionable guidance. Trainings may be held in person or virtually, depending on the topic.
