It analyses two textbooks, Spotlight on English Book 3 and Getting Through This article inquires into Algerian English textbooks to see the extent to which they reflect the interdisciplinary orientation of the curriculum. The importance of Interdisciplinarity in education is asserted by Piaget, who writes: "the result for education is that an increasingly large place must be reserved for new points of view-interdisciplinary by nature-like those that are being developed today by psycholinguistics, decision theory, economy, psychology, sociology, etc" (1973:33). Piaget believes that developing crosscurricular competencies in learners, on the basis of "big concepts"/"broad areas of learning", helps them shift to a new profile of autonomous learners. For him, broad areas of learning, which are interdisciplinary in nature, result into an imperative drive which combines different areas of knowledge and skills, looks critically at personal, social, and cultural environments, , belonging respectively to the middle and secondary school levels. The analysis shows that the designers have adopted the Interpretation, Constructivist Design (ICON) Model (O'Mallet and Chamot 1990) and restricted its use to the strategy of generating and testing hypotheses. Our main findings underscore the constructivist orientation of the curriculum and underline three important flaws in the textbooks: one, the activities are not purposive in questioning for information and cooperation; two, the generating strategy serves as a learning strategy rather than as a learning process; three, the stages of multiple interpretations and manifestations are rarely attained, leaving little opportunity for knowledge transfer to real life contexts.

This experiment is concerned with the teaching of communication methodology (journalism) and drama for fourth year students. It adopts the approach called task-based teaching (CBT) and aims at paving the way to the implementation of the BMD (Bachelor, Master's, and Doctorate) pedagogy in the department. The discussion of the results reached after two years of the implementation of drama and communication workshops requires the following: One, the exposition of the theory which informs them; Two, elucidating the linkages that tie this theory to the BMD system; Three, the description of the projects and their outcome. Obviously, the scheme of organisation followed in this paper follows this order. Task-Based Approach: The theoretical framework underlying the implementation of communication and drama classes are grounded in task-based approach to language learning. The approach is classified in the category of analytic syllabuses which is "a non-interventionist, experiential approach which aims to immerse learners in real-life communication" and which "stresses the growth and selfrealization of the individual" (Beglar and Hunt, 2002: 96).

However, after some years of its implementation in different departments of our faculty, including the department of English, figures show that success rates are often lower than what they used to be in the old system. Measures should therefore be taken to handle students' failure, measures that must be in line with both the spirit of the LMD and the background realities of Algerian universities. In the light of this situation, this paper will be concerned with support pedagogy in re-take courses and the way to cope with the large number of students in these classes. It is intended to provide a battery of innovative and effective measures that address English teachers' concerns over course design and classroom management. Introduction: The LMD system is designed and implemented so as to maximize the students' chances of success. However, after some years of its implementation in different departments of our faculty, including the department of English, figures show that success rates are lower than what they used to be in the old system. Many factors, some of which are exogenous and others endogenous to the system, contributed to this frustrating situation. Nonetheless, whatever their nature, these factors defy the purposes for which the LMD has been set forth, and it is our duty as higher education professionals to face them. In this paper, we'll try to address the issue of students' failure by invoking the idea of "Mobility", which is a key word in the educational and organizational policy behind the LMD. Mobility

The main aim is to examine the distribution of questioning techniques and the length of language output elicited by each category. The study will fill the research gap, in the local context, regarding the effects of functional questions on the length of students’ responses. The following main question is sought to be answered: What is the epistemic category of questions that can prompt students to produce more extended language output in EFL? The study involves descriptive correlational research that makes use of a quantitative method for answering the research questions. It implements Long and Sato’s (1984) taxonomy (based on Kearsley, 1976) for the categorization of functional questions. The database of this study included 566 questions, of which 420 were epistemic and 111 were echoic in function. The data collection procedure took place at the departments ...

Among the competencies that have been given due concern, the intellectual competency is regarded as central in the recent educational reform movement.

Strategy training has been shown to have a major effect on diverse aspects of English as a foreign language. This paper reports on an investigation of the listening strategy training, particularly metacognitive strategy training among 50 Algerian Pre-service Teachers who learn English as a foreign language and its impact on their listening comprehension performance and their metacognitive strategies awareness. Results of this quasiexperimental study revealed significant improvement in the listening comprehension ability and considerable increase in the metacognitive awareness of the experimental group in comparison to the control group.

It places the Algerian learner in the position of a multi-language user (mother tongue, national language, school languages). This creates cultural diversity fostered by the existence of a diversity of understandings of the local, regional, national and international environments. Compared to a monolingual speaker, a language learner who becomes multilingual is expected to respond differently to a variety of situations. This suggests that his/her understanding is deepened thanks to "cultural dialogues" and that he/she becomes more aware to accept the other by recognizing and sharing the difference with the other. But, a question arises: does this diversity of culture lead to what H. Bhabha calls the "third place"? In other terms, does this offer opportunity for the learner to see his/her local world through lenses of the "Global Village" without the risk of acculturation? The challenge is therefore to define and construct a learner's identity through EFL learning. Within this perspective, Guy Oliver Fauve (1993), believes that local allegiances should be reconciled with global affinities. For him, our world is a world of globalization; therefore, the big challenge remains in the capacity to foster "a vision of the whole that accommodates the diversity of the parts" (ibid:vii). Put differently, the function of culture is to preserve the individual's identity without neglecting the difference with the other's.

Little empirical research is done on how to integrate formative assessment in Higher Education. The purpose of this study is to contribute to the development of students’ self-assessment by addressing the gap found in teachers’ current assessment practices. Specifically, this paper explores teachers’ classroom assessment practices in the English department of Bejaia University, Algeria and their attitudes and beliefs about students’ self-assessment in academic writing. The study involved fourteen Algerian teachers of EFL writing who developed writing logs in which issues related to their attitudes and experiences about assessment in general and self-assessment in particular were addressed. Results permitted to frame self-assessment from teachers’ perspective and identify a range of factors responsible for the development of this process in EFL classrooms. In an attempt to facilitate the integration of self-assessment into EFL writing instruction and reinforce the assessment reform, we suggested a number of implications.
