The Center for Recruitment and Retention of Mathematics Teachers (CRR) at the University of Arizona is working to attract, develop, and support mathematics teachers through innovative programs, retaining high quality teachers in mathematics education.
The CRR has been honored with the Center Award for Excellence, recognizing its commitment to creating a supportive, empowering, and high-performing workplace.
Since 2001, CRR has addressed the critical need for qualified mathematics teachers across Arizona while cultivating a culture rooted in collaboration, inclusion, and innovation, where team members are encouraged to grow, lead, and contribute meaningfully. Through strong leadership, open communication, and a focus on work-life balance, CRR fosters an environment where staff feel valued and supported, while its data-informed practices and statewide partnerships drive continuous improvement and impact.
From hosting over 60 workshops annually to leading Arizona’s largest mathematics education conference, CRR exemplifies excellence in both its mission-driven work and its internal culture, making it a model for organizational success and a deserving recipient of this recognition.

“I serve because I felt I could make a tangible, positive impact on my community. I wanted to show students who struggle with math what I find fascinating about it, in the hope that they might develop the same interest.” - Rik
"I serve because it gives me the opportunity to help other students in an area I personally struggled with when I was learning. This program allows me to imprint a love for math and science on future students and teach them what I've learned! You learn something new every day, and in math it's often a lot easier than you initially think, especially with the right mentor to help guide you!" - Taylor
Free Zoom Tutoring
“I serve because I believe no student should suffer silently through their math class. By offering free tutoring services, I hope to provide more inclusive access for anyone who needs additional support. My goal for each session is that every student leaves with more confidence in their own math abilities.” - Ryan
CRR director, Dr. Rodrigo Gutiérrez, has been nominated for a 2026 LFSA Award!

Congratulations to our November & December Student Employee of the Month!
The Math Department at the University of Arizona started a brand-new Student Employee Recognition program in the fall, and Angel is one of the CRR's well-deserved recipients. We are so thankful for him, and all the hard work he pours into his role. He truly makes a difference! When asked what he enjoys most about his job, Angel shared, “I enjoy the fact that I can assist in the process of being able to further the goals of the CRR. I love that when I go into work, I am a part of something that means more than me. That I am able to be a part of a goal that wants people to benefit in the world of education.” You can
