Community Engagement in La Fortuna
Costa Rica is known for being ecologically diverse and committed to sustainable ecotourism. Nearly one quarter of the country's land area is protected – the largest percentage of any country in the world. Over four days, you will work alongside the bilingual staff members of Proyecto Asis, an organization dedicated to wildlife protection, environmental conservation, and fostering positive cultural exchanges through education and service. Proyecto Asis is an eight acre ecological reserve on the edge of the rainforest, home to monkeys, caimans, wild pigs, parrots, sloths, and more! Your service may include helping take care of the animals by feeding them, cleaning their cages, and assisting in repairing or building new cages. You will also spend two days volunteering at a local elementary school. There, you will provide support for maintenance projects (e.g. painting classrooms) and may help with classroom projects and/or instruction. When not volunteering, you will engage in a variety of cultural activities to better acclimate yourself to Costa Rican life and the area surrounding the Arenal Volcano. A home stay with a Costa Rican family will give you the opportunity to practice your Spanish, while a visit to a local farm will enlighten you about “Tico” traditions, agricultural exports, and cooking practices.

Comparative Health Systems- Universal Health Care
Costa Rica, a middle-income country, has health status indicators, including longevity and infant mortality rates, which rival those of the U.S. while spending much less money as measured by per capita expenditures or percentage of GDP. The Costa Rican system focuses on primary care and health promotion to improve the health of vulnerable and poor population groups resulting in improved health for all. Health is regarded as a human right in Costa Rica, but not in the U.S. This program compares the health care systems of the United States and Costa Rica. The course examines national histories, philosophies, and cultural influences in light of the development of each country’s health care system. While abroad, you will experience first-hand public health topics through lectures, discussions, and site visits. On this program you will participate in meetings and lectures at the University of Costa Rica, with the majority of program activities and learning taking place in the field during site visits to the Ministry of Health, central and regional hospitals, and primary health care centers, as well as outreach programs designed to address the needs of at-risk populations (e.g. migrant coffee pickers, immigrant populations, and indigenous groups).

VEDIKE Global Citizens Programs
UAlbany partners with VEDIKE's Global Citizens for Sustainable Development (GCSD) in India on a co-curricular service-learning model, connecting theory taught in the classroom to its practical application used in the world. It will not only give international exposure to students but also engage them through hands-on experiences like building houses, children's homes, and other facilities for poor communities. The program will also introduce students to Indian society and culture by focusing on three areas – culture, peace, and development. It will focus on Global Citizenship and engage students in issues related to children's rights, education, gender, livelihood, poverty alleviation, rural and sustainable development. Students will work with at-risk children and be involved in activities such as teaching English, math and creative arts, and introducing new sports to the children. Students will also facilitate and participate in discussion forums with their peers in India.

Women, Multicultural Europe, and the African Diaspora
London is a city made famous by its royal residents in Buckingham Palace, and the world rejoiced when Prince Harry, brother to a future king, married Meghan Markle, a mixed-race American woman, in the spring of 2018. While news media has highlighted the prince’s “unconventional” choice in a bride, Ms. Markle fits right into England’s multiracial community. This racial and ethnic diversity is not just a sign of the country’s future but also its colonial past. London is also reflective of its neighboring city of Paris in France. Both these urban centers are renowned for their rich history and world class art and architecture. Lesser known is their impact on black women’s transatlantic histories. This 9-day study abroad in London and Paris with a follow-up online course explores the multiracial histories of unique women who have reshaped their race and gender identities in these rich cities and influenced transatlantic cultures pertaining to slavery, colonialism, arts, and social movements. Tour highlights may include the city of London and Windsor, Kenwood House – home to Dido Elizabeth Belle – thriving black neighborhoods in London, a tour of Paris and sites relating to famous women of color, from Sally Hemings to Josephine Baker, a visit to the Louvre, and a dinner cruise on the Seine River.
