Overview

Hukou Waterfall, located on the main stream of the Yellow River at the border between Ji County in Linfen City, Shanxi Province, and Yichuan County in Yan'an City, Shaanxi Province, China, is the second largest waterfall in China and the world's largest yellow waterfall. The Yellow River rushes here, where the cliffs on both banks stand steeply, and the river mouth narrows like a pot's spout, hence the name "Hukou Waterfall" (Pot Spout Waterfall). The river upstream of the waterfall is about 300 meters wide, but within a distance of less than 500 meters, it is compressed to a width of 20-30 meters, cascading down from a steep cliff over 20 meters high, creating the majestic spectacle of "a thousand miles of the Yellow River gathered into one pot." Its tremendous momentum, magnificent scenery, and unique natural and cultural landscape make it a symbol of the Chinese national spirit. It is also a National Scenic Area, a National Geopark, and a National 5A-level Tourist Attraction.

History

The history of Hukou Waterfall is closely linked to the civilization of the Yellow River. According to the "Shangshu·Yugong," when Yu the Great controlled the floods, he "channeled the river through Jishi, reaching Longmen." The "Mengmen Mountain" near Hukou is traditionally said to be a relic of Yu the Great's flood control efforts. Since ancient times, Hukou has been a strategic and treacherous pass on the Yellow River's waterway, witnessing the hardships and vicissitudes of countless boats. Ancient literati and poets such as Li Bai and Liu Yuxi also left poems here, marveling at its grandeur. During the War of Resistance against Japan, inspired by the waterfall's majestic power, the renowned musician Xian Xinghai composed the immortal masterpiece "The Yellow River Cantata," adding another layer of symbolic meaning to Hukou Waterfall as an emblem of national spirit. With modern tourism development, Hukou Waterfall has become an important tourist destination integrating natural wonders, historical culture, and red education.

Main Attractions

The scenery of Hukou Waterfall varies with the seasons. The main viewing points are distributed on the Shanxi side and the Shaanxi side, offering different perspectives, each with its own merits.

1. Main Waterfall Area: This is the core of Hukou Waterfall. Here, the Yellow River water plummets down, creating a sky-full of mist with a thunderous roar, presenting a magnificent and imposing sight. Especially during the flood season (July-August each year), the water volume increases significantly, and the waterfall can reach a width of a hundred meters, making it most spectacular.
2. Dragon Cave (Shanxi side): Also known as the "Waterfall Viewing Cave," it is a natural stone cave. Visitors can descend to a side platform below the waterfall, looking up at the water cascading from the sky, experiencing the震撼 of "the Yellow River's waters coming from heaven." Water mist sprays onto the face, and rainbows often appear.
3. Mengmen Mountain: Located in the middle of the river about 3 kilometers downstream from the waterfall, it consists of two huge bedrock stones standing firm in the torrent. It is traditionally said to be a relic of Yu the Great's flood control. Ancient inscriptions are carved on it, and it can be approached on foot during the dry season.
4. Ten-Mile Dragon Trough: A deep stone trough several kilometers long formed by millennia of river erosion downstream of the waterfall. It is a wonder of the Yellow River's course, showcasing the immense power of nature.
5. Dry Land Boat-Tracking Relics (Shaanxi side): Historically, when boats needed to pass Hukou Waterfall, they had to be hauled overland by human or animal power to bypass the falls, known as "dry land boat tracking." Related relics and displays are still preserved on the bank.
6. "The Yellow River Cantata" Live-Action Performance (Seasonal): On the Shaanxi side, during the peak tourist season, live-action performances themed around the Yellow River and the War of Resistance are often held, recreating that stirring period of history.

Practical Information

The Hukou Waterfall scenic area has two entrances: one in Ji County, Shanxi, and one in Yichuan County, Shaanxi. They are managed by the two provinces separately, and tickets are purchased separately, but they offer views of different sides of the same waterfall. The Shanxi side perspective focuses more on overlooking the full view of the waterfall and experiencing the Dragon Cave, while the Shaanxi side offers a broader view, better showcasing the frontal width of the waterfall and the "dry land boat tracking" culture.
