Interlibrary Loan FAQ
Who May Use Interlibrary Loan Services?
UNC Asheville students, faculty, staff, alumni, retired faculty, and students classified as "visiting" while taking coursework for credit at UNC Asheville may use this service. Interlibrary loan for students is used to support courses or credit-bearing research projects offered at UNC Asheville.
Community borrowers, OLLI, and other groups affiliated with UNC Asheville should contact their local public libraries for Interlibrary Loan service.
How many items may be requested?
Faculty
Staff:
There is no limit on the total number of requests a faculty member may make.
Students:
Students may have up to
20 active
interlibrary loan requests at any one time.
Alumni:
Limit 20 per year. Only 5 may be checked out at any given time. Alumni need to get a free Guest Borrower's Card in order to make use of Interlibrary Borrowing. To obtain your
Guest Borrower's Card
, please fill out
this form
and bring it to the
alumni office
between 8AM-5PM, Monday-Friday. Forms are also available at the alumni office. Once your alumni status has been confirmed, the library will issue you a library card.
We encourage users to travel to other libraries for on-site access to material when extensive use of a collection is required.
Material generally not available on interlibrary loan are: rare books, some audiovisual materials, printed newspapers, some dissertations and theses, reference books, and entire issues of recent periodicals. Exceptions for loans of certain materials may be made by special agreements. Requests for photocopied articles from recent periodicals are also limited by copyright law (Title 17, U.S. Code).
How long will it take?
Books arrive in about 5 -10 days. Book loans are usually for four weeks and may be renewed by contacting the Interlibrary Loan office (nhayes@unca.edu). Journal articles usually arrive within 2-5 days in electronic format.
Will the loan terms be the same as those at Ramsey Library?
Interlibrary loan is a courtesy provided by the lending library and any conditions of use imposed by that library must be observed. The lending library may stipulate that an item is for library-use only and prohibit all photocopying. Misuse of ILL services (failure to return books, to pay fees, or to observe lending restrictions) may result in a loss of borrower’s ILL privileges.
How much does it cost?
Faculty/Staff:
The library absorbs all reasonable costs associated with faculty/staff borrowing.
Students:
The library absorbs up to $100.00 per semester per student in costs for student borrowing.
What about late fees?
Students and Alumni are charged $ .20 each day items are overdue.
What if I lose or damage a borrowed book?
Borrowers
are charged replacement cost for lost or damaged materials.
