Originally composed in Greek, it was translated into a multitude of ancient languages, including the three major literary dialects of Coptic - viz., Sahidic, Fayyumic, and Bohairic. Exactly one century ago, Giuseppe Balestri and Henri Hyvernat produced for this series an exemplary edition of two Bohairic manuscripts of the martyrdom. The present volume supplements the classic work of these two Coptologists by offering the reader an edition and translation of the other eight Coptic witnesses. The edition is preceded by a study which argues that, although scholars often speak of THE Coptic version of the Martyrdom of George, there are, in fact, two distinct Coptic versions - viz., one attested by the extant Sahidic manuscripts and one attested in Bohairic and Fayyumic.

Miroshnikov demonstrates that a Platonist lens is indispensable to the understanding of a number of the Thomasine sayings that have, for decades, remained elusive as exegetical cruces. The Gospel of Thomas is thus an important witness to the early stages of the process that eventually led to the Platonist formulation of certain Christian dogmata.

The contributions deal with a wide range of topics and literary genres, including apocryphal acts and the so-called apostolic memoirs. The volume is divided into two sections: editiones, which contains editions of several important texts in Sahidic Coptic, and studia, which comprises five articles on Coptic parabiblical literature. The literary works discussed in the volume are contextualized in the scope of Coptic literature, regardless of whether they were originally composed in Coptic or translated into Coptic from Greek. Some of the contributions also deal with the reception of Coptic literature in Arabic and Old Nubian literary traditions.

Of the three extant leaves, two preserve a portion of an erotapokrisis that in another manuscript bears the title 'The questions of Faustus and Timothy, deacons of the church of Alexandria, before saint Horsiesius the archimandrite' (CPG 2371); these leaves were published in 1990 by Tito Orlandi and have now been reedited with numerous improvements. The article also includes the editio princeps of the third leaf, comprising an unidentified homily on fornication. The edition of the Coptic text is preceded by a thorough discussion of the codicology and paleography of CLM 1220, its linguistic features, contents, provenance, and date.

Phil.; cc 0583 = BHO 975-978), a Coptic apocryphal text detailing the apostle Philip's missionary work in the "city of Phrygia." Within the Coptic-Arabic-Ethiopic literary tradition, this text is often transmitted together with the Coptic Martyrdom of Philip (hereafter, Copt. Mart. Phil.; cc 0582 = BHO 979, 982-983); in the manuscripts, these two texts comprise the dossier of Philip, copied alongside the dossiers of the other apostles.
In the introduction to the edition, I offer an overview of the contents of Pre. Phil. and the extant witnesses to the text of the apocryphon-viz., the five Coptic manuscripts (three in Sahidic, one in Fayyūmic, and one in Bohairic) and the two versions (Arabic and Ethiopic). I also discuss the variation in the extant titles of Pre. Phil., where Philip's missionary lot is given either as Phrygia or Africa. Finally, I offer a critical survey of various hypotheses about Pre. Phil. in its history of scholarship. The introduction is followed by a semi-diplomatic edition of the Sahidic fragments, text-critical notes, and an English translation of the Coptic text.

The papyrus witnesses several personal names hitherto unattested in Coptic.

This leaf is the only surviving textual witness of 1:1–6 of “The book of the Maccabees,” the Sahidic Coptic version of 4 Maccabees. In the introduction, I discuss the date of the version, the significance of its title, and the translator’s rendering of certain Greek technical terms. This is followed by a semi-diplomatic edition of the leaf, an English translation, and images.

The leaves together witness the Coptic Martyrdom of Andrew (CANT 235), an Egyptian text that has little to do with the better-known Greek martyrdom of the apostle (CANT 225). In the introduction, the author discusses the sources and date of the text, as well as the connection of Andrew with the motif of fire. The author argues that the text was composed for liturgical purposes and that the shorter version of the Coptic Martyrdom of Andrew (represented by the two Coptic witnesses) is original, while the longer one (attested in Arabic and Ethiopic) is the result of a later redaction. The introduction is followed by a diplomatic edition of the Coptic fragments and an English translation.

These fragments bear witness to 1 Cor 2.12-3.18; 7.16-30; 15.3-30 in the 'classical' variety of Fayyūmic Coptic (dialect F5). The first part of this article was published in NTS 68 (2022) 89-104. In the second part, I discuss the witnesses to the Fayyūmic version (fa) of First Corinthians, the relationship between fa and the Bohairic version (bo), and the text-critical value of the variant readings attested in P.MorganLib. 265. This is followed by the editio princeps of the manuscript, notes on the Coptic text, an English translation and images.

These fragments bear witness to 1 Cor 2.12-3.18; 7.16-30; 15.3-30 in the 'classical' variety of Fayyūmic Coptic (dialect F5). Most of these verses have been hitherto unattested in Fayyūmic and thus allow us to attain better insight into the history and text of the Coptic Bible. In the first part of this article, I discuss the codicology of P.MorganLib. 265, its linguistic features, provenance and date.
