Synopsis

China's first national forest park, famous for its unique quartz-sandstone pillar landforms. The filming location for Avatar's 'Hallelujah Mountain.' A UNESCO World Natural Heritage Site since 1992.

Overview

Zhangjiajie National Forest Park, located in Zhangjiajie City, Hunan Province, is China's first national forest park, established in 1982 with State Council approval. The park is world-famous for its unique "Zhangjiajie Landform" — quartz-sandstone pillar forest — and has been described as "an enlarged potted landscape, a miniature fairyland."

Zhangjiajie Landform is a unique type of sandstone landform characterized by angular, tall stone pillar forests formed by water erosion, gravitational collapse, and weathering. The park contains over 3,000 quartz-sandstone pillars ranging from tens to hundreds of meters in height.

In 2001, Zhangjiajie was designated as a UNESCO World Geopark. The Wulingyuan Scenic Area, which includes Zhangjiajie, was inscribed on the World Natural Heritage List in 1992.

In 2008, Zhangjiajie's "Southern Sky Column" was selected by the Avatar film crew as the prototype for "Hallelujah Mountain" (the floating mountain), propelling Zhangjiajie to global fame.

Main Scenic Areas

Zhangjiajie National Forest Park is the core component of the Wulingyuan Scenic Area, which also includes Tianzishan Nature Reserve, Suoxiyu Nature Reserve, and Yangjiajie Nature Reserve.

Scenic Area Features
Huangshi Village (Yellow Stone Village) "Without visiting Huangshi Village, you haven't been to Zhangjiajie" — one of the best viewpoints
Golden Whip Stream 7.5 km long, flanked by pillar forests — "the world's most beautiful canyon"
Yuanjiajie Avatar's "Hallelujah Mountain" filming location, features the "Southern Sky Column" (renamed "Avatar Hallelujah Mountain")
Tianzishan (Emperor Mountain) Known as the "King of Peak Forests," famous for Imperial Writing Brushes and Fairy Scattering Flowers
Ten-Mile Gallery A valley over ten li long, lined with bizarre peaks and rocks like a natural gallery
Yangjiajie Known for its "Natural Great Wall," featuring unique sandstone wall landforms
Yaozishan A more primitive and quiet scenic area with fewer tourists and beautiful natural scenery
Glass Walkway Suspended on the western side of Tianmen Mountain, 60m long at 1,430m elevation

Zhangjiajie Landform

The formation of Zhangjiajie Landform spans approximately 380 million years of geological evolution:

  1. Devonian Period (~380 million years ago): The area was a coastal environment where over 500 meters of quartz-sandstone was deposited
  2. Tectonic Uplift: The quartz-sandstone layers were raised with crustal movement, forming mountains
  3. Water Erosion: Prolonged water erosion cut along rock joints (cracks), forming deep valleys
  4. Gravitational Collapse and Weathering: Rock collapsed along joints, leaving isolated stone pillars and peaks
  5. Final Formation: Over 3,000 quartz-sandstone pillars creating the spectacular peak forest landscape

This unique landform type has been named "Zhangjiajie Landform" by the international geological community and has become a classic case study in global sandstone geomorphology research.

Avatar and Zhangjiajie

In 2008, the Avatar film crew visited Zhangjiajie for location scouting, and Yuanjiajie's "Southern Sky Column" was selected as the prototype for "Hallelujah Mountain" (the floating mountain) in the film. In January 2010, "Southern Sky Column" was officially renamed "Avatar Hallelujah Mountain," sparking widespread discussion.

In 2025, ahead of the release of Avatar 3, Zhangjiajie National Forest Park announced the "Top 10 Avatar Filming Locations," reigniting global attention from fans and travelers.
