Event and Subjectivity presents a rich phenomenological analysis of the event in contemporary phe... more Event and Subjectivity presents a rich phenomenological analysis of the event in contemporary phenomenology by focussing on the work of Claude Romano and Jean-Luc Marion. Although the event is a major topic of contemporary philosophy, its centrality has not been acknowledged enough in the phenomenological movement. The book starts with the idea that the event cannot find a proper place in Husserl’s transcendental phenomenology and Heidegger’s existential phenomenology.
It proposes a phenomenological version of the event that transforms the definition of phenomenon, subjectivity and phenomenology itself in order to do justice to the phenomenality of the event.
At the same time, Event and Subjectivity is the first book on Claude Romano’s understanding of phenomenology in English. It also offers a fresh reading of the phenomenology of Jean-Luc Marion by highlighting the phenomenon of the event.

This paper critically discusses Edmund Husserl's conception of 'Europe' and the limitation it pos... more This paper critically discusses Edmund Husserl's conception of 'Europe' and the limitation it poses on the methodology of phenomenology. Husserl's invention of the idea of Europe from Ancient Greek heritage as an ideal and spirit leads him to privilege a particular kind of rationality in the name of universalscientific phenomenology. For him, non-European 'philosophies' are not philosophy in a genuine sense; rather he speaks of them as 'practical' or 'world-knowledge'. The methodological basis for this claim and its Eurocentric supremacy is rooted in Husserl's attribution of a fundamental role to epochē and transcendental reduction in phenomenology. I address the implications of Husserl's problematic concept of Europe as a part of his transcendental phenomenology. First, I present how this idea of Europe is based on asserting superiority over others who remained outside of this spirit. Furthermore, I demonstrate how Husserl's idea of Europe is linked to transcendentalism in phenomenology. This brings us closer to discussing Husserl's conceptualization of epochē and reduction, and above all, what counts as 'genuine philosophy' for Husserl. My inquiry shows that epochē and reduction imply an unachievable characterization of phenomenology, and questioning them can be instrumental in contemplating a 'provincialized' Europe in the phenomenological movement.

Çağdaş düşüncenin önemli akımlarından "spekülatif realizm", yirminci yüzyılın en etkin felsefi ha... more Çağdaş düşüncenin önemli akımlarından "spekülatif realizm", yirminci yüzyılın en etkin felsefi hareketi olan fenomenolojiyi korelasyonculuk kavramının altında eleştirmektedir. Bu eleştirinin altında yatan anlayış, fenomenolojinin transandantal bir yapıya sahip olduğudur. Fenomenolojinin sadece bu belirli anlayış altında tanımlanamayacağı iddiasıyla yola çıkarak çağdaş fenomenologlardan Claude Romano'nun "betimsel realizm" dediği, fenomenolojin kendi imkânlarıyla vardığı realist bir fenomenoloji bu yazıda tartışılacaktır. Öncelikle spekülatif materyalist ve realistlerin korelasyonculuk kavramını inceledikten sonra, bu kavram ışığında fenomenolojiye yönelttikleri fenomenolojinin transandantal-idealist olması meselesiyle meşgul olunacaktır. Fenomenolojin transandantal bir yapıya sahip olmak zorunda olmadığını Claude Romano'nun betimsel realizm projesini ele alarak açıkladıktan sonra spekülatif akımın realizm anlayışıyla Romano'nun fenomenolojik realizmi kısaca karşılaştırarak, korelasyonculuk eleştirisinin bu yeni fenomenoloji anlayışı için ne kadar geçerli olabileceği tartışılacaktır.

This article will seek answers for these questions in two steps. First, I will discuss why Marion’s thought seems to be distant from any tradition other than the Christian one. I will try to understand whether Marion leaves open any possibility of taking into account other religious traditions. In this part, I will focus on his phenomenological project wherein Marion regards only the Christian sense of revelation as saturated phenomenon par excellence – even if it is a phenomenological possibility – while at the same time claiming the universality of givenness. Secondly, despite Marion’s complete lack of discussion about other religious traditions, I will make an attempt to read his theological works together with Islamic thought by focusing on a towering figure in Islamic mysticism, Ibn Arabi.

Kaynayan bu kazanda, geçen yüzyıldaki gelişmeleri, akımları tanımlamak için kullanılan kavramlar da buharlaşıyor. Soykırım ve faşizm tarihçisi Enzo Traverso, tam da bu bağlamda, Avrupa’da her geçen gün kendisini daha da gösteren ve dünyanın başka yerlerinde ise farklı şekillerde beliren yeni sağ hareketleri merceğine alıyor. Avrupa içinde bile birçok farklılık gösteren mezkûr hareketlerin “faşizm” ile açıklanamayacağını iddia eden Traverso, bu hareketlerin yarattığı heterojen ve karma duruma dikkat çekerek “post-faşizm” kavramını öneriyor. Bu hareketlerin nevi şahsına münhasır unsurlarına, kendilerini geçmiş faşist ideolojilerden nasıl ayırdıklarına dikkat çeken Traverso, günümüz dünyasını etkileyen yabancı düşmanlığının yanında İslamofobi, antisemitizm gibi birçok meseleyi de tartışmanın merkezine alıyor.

Bernhard Waldenfels Almanca fenomenolojinin 20. ve 21. yüzyıldaki en faal felsefecilerinden biris... more Bernhard Waldenfels Almanca fenomenolojinin 20. ve 21. yüzyıldaki en faal felsefecilerinden birisidir. 1934 yılında doğan Waldenfels doktorasını Münih’te tamamladıktan sonra çalışmalarına Paris’te devam etti. Merleau-Ponty ve Paul Ricoeur’ün öğrencisi oldu. Daha sonra Münih Ludwig Maximillian Üniversitesinde dersler verdi. 1976 yılında profesör olarak atandığı Ruhr Üniversitesi Bochum’da 1999’da emekli oldu ve 2016 yılına kadar orada ders vermeyi sürdürdü.
Fransız düşüncesini Almanya’da tanıttı. Dünyanın birçok yerinde konuşmalar vermiş ve konferanslara katılmıştır. Eserlerinde “yabancı” (fremd) meselesini merkeze alarak birçok konuya değinmiştir.
