1951 flood in Topeka, Kansas

This series of photographs shows men working at the dike around the waterworks in Topeka, Kansas during the 1951 flood. One photo shows the filling of the sandbags and the other passing them along a long line to be placed on top of the dike and brick wall. Boy Scout Ernst F. Tonsing photographed and filled bags for 36 hours. While flood water did seep onto the grounds, the waterworks continued to pump clean water to the homes and businesses in Topeka.

This is an 8mm motion picture film showing the 1951 flood in northeast Kansas. Locations in northeast Kansas include Topeka, Lecompton, Lawrence, and Kansas City. Alexander Weir, the cinematographer, took footage during the flood and after the water receded.

Here are 16 slides showing damage caused by the 1966 tornado in downtown and residential areas in Topeka, Kansas. Several buildings are visible in the slides including the National Reserve Life, Topeka bus barn, Kansas State Capitol and printing plant, and KPL buildings.

Captain Hughes labeled this photograph the 18th Field Artillery, Nv Lierstal. It shows the military moving equipment through the mountains. The photo was taken June 16, 1919 while he was with the Army of Occupation. James C. Hughes, as part of the 35th Division, left Fort Sill, Oklahoma, and traveled to Hoboken, New Jersey, where he boarded the troop ship "Ceramic" on May 18, 1918. Hughes arrived in Liverpool, England, on June 1, 1918 and then landed at Le Havre, France, on June 9, 1918. Hughes fought in the battles of St. Michael and the Meuse-Argonne. He was at Verdun on Armistice Day, November 11, 1918. He took no photos of the actual fighting. He did take many photographs after the war as part of the Army of Occupation until he left France on July 18, 1919. 50 Camp, Crawford County, Kansas

A photograph of 50 Camp, or Camp 50, a small unincorporated community in Crawford County approximately 2 miles west of Arma. It was a company town of Central Coal and Coke and continues as a small residential community. Visible is a mine and mining equipment.

About Nicodemus, The Daily Journal

This article from the Lawrence Daily Journal discusses a newspaper article from the Chicago Tribune written during the Exoduster Movement in 1879 providing a brief history of the black community of freed people at Nicodemus, Kansas settled in 1877. Nicodemus is now a historic site administered by the National Parks Service.
