Overview

In the Mood for Love (2000) is a Hong Kong romantic drama written and directed by Wong Kar-wai, starring Tony Leung Chiu-wai and Maggie Cheung. The film holds a Douban rating of 8.8 from over 620,000 reviews and is widely considered one of the greatest films in cinema history. In 2022, Sight & Sound named it one of the 100 greatest films ever made.

Set in 1960s Hong Kong, the film tells the story of two neighbors who discover their respective spouses are having an affair, and the restrained, unspoken love that develops between them.

Plot Summary

In 1962 Hong Kong, newspaper editor Chow Mo-wan (Tony Leung) and his wife move into a crowded apartment building. On the same floor, Su Li-zhen (Maggie Cheung) and her husband have also just moved in. The cramped quarters force the neighbors into constant proximity.

Over time, Chow and Su discover that their spouses are having an affair with each other. Shocked and hurt, they begin meeting regularly — rehearsing scenes from martial arts novels, sharing meals at noodle stalls, and walking the rain-slicked streets of Hong Kong together. Their bond deepens, yet they resolve: "We won't be like them."

The film culminates with Chow traveling alone to the ruins of Angkor Wat in Cambodia, whispering his secret into a hole in the stone wall and sealing it with mud — one of cinema's most iconic closing sequences.

Production

Wong Kar-wai's legendary working method — extensive improvisation, months of shooting, and obsessive attention to detail — reached its apex with this film. Production lasted approximately 15 months across Bangkok, Hong Kong, and other locations.

Art director William Chang created 27 qipao (cheongsam) dresses for Maggie Cheung, each one carefully selected for specific scenes. The qipao became the film's most iconic visual element. Cinematographer Christopher Doyle employed slow-motion techniques and shadow play to create the film's distinctive warm, humid, nostalgic atmosphere.

The soundtrack features Shigeru Umebayashi's "Yumeji's Theme" and Nat King Cole's Spanish-language songs, creating an intoxicating blend of East and West.

Cultural Impact

Tony Leung won the Best Actor award at the 2000 Cannes Film Festival, becoming the first Hong Kong actor to receive this honor. The film also received a Palme d'Or nomination and won multiple international awards.

In the Mood for Love has profoundly influenced filmmakers worldwide, from Barry Jenkins (Moonlight) to Sofia Coppola (Lost in Translation). The film's visual language — its narrow corridors, rain-slicked streets, and unforgettable qipao silhouettes — has become a permanent part of cinema's aesthetic vocabulary.
