Hi Amir!
I'd like to ask for your help in carrying out a cleanup like the ones you've been doing recently. We decided to delete ~1.5M categories and an equal number of redirects, so ~3M pages in total.
User:Mitte27
is trying his best so far, but some elusive issue is reducing the speed of his deletions. Thus he asked me to ask you (heh) if you could perhaps help us out a little? The current speed is 10k pages/day and we'd be grateful for any help. Thanks in advance.

Hi, yeah 10K a day is too low, it'll take a year to finish (lol). Are you using pywikibot? if so, you could do a bit of weird gymnastics like what I did with Vietnamese Wikipedia. For example, load multiple runners concurrently but use a randomizer to make sure the deletion scripts don't follow each other (either, you get the whole list, load it up and use python's shuffle or anything similar OR flip a coin when deciding to check a page and delete it, e.g. if you're running ten deletion scripts, call random.random() and only handle the page if the result is below 0.1).
I can try to reuse the script I had for Vietnamese Wikipedia but I need to know exactly what pages you want to delete. So I don't go around delete random pages accidentally :D

the MassDelete script
which I told him about, I can't really do better since I'm not an admin.
The pages in question are another piece of Krassotkin's legacy. He used his infamous bot to create hundreds of thousands of categories for first names and surnames. So all subcategories of
Category:Личные имена по алфавиту
and
Category:Фамилии по алфавиту
should be deleted, and also corresponding disambig categories.
An example for better understanding. We have
Category:Аарре (имя)
which is a first name and so belongs to 'Личные имена по алфавиту'. It has a subcategory
Category:Аарре (тезки по алфавиту)
and is itself a subcategory of
Category:Аарре
. All three of them should be deleted. The same goes for the surnames in that second category 'Фамилии по алфавиту'.
In addition, every category in the project has a redirect to it from ns0 (don't ask). Those should also be deleted.
But if a category contains pages, it should be left alone. So this might be a bit hard.

Yes, do it, please.
The categories should be deleted in the following order:
empty subcats of
Категория:Личные имена по алфавиту
empty subcats of
Категория:Однофамильцы по алфавиту
empty subcats of
Категория:Фамилии по алфавиту
empty subcats of
Категория:Разрешение неоднозначностей
After these are deleted, a lot of broken redirects will appear, please delete them all as well.
I'll post a heads-up on the forum.

I get to it ASAP. Many things to do :( I think I can make it before the date or push the date for ruwikinews a bit until these are deleted.

These five categories have been basically emptied now. Started deleting the broken redirects from the main ns but worth noting that from 1.93M categories in this wiki, 1.60M are empty (no page, no subcat, no files). I don't know where they are coming from but worth noting regardless.

Great job. Those categories were created by the same bot that caused the incident you surely remember. By the way, how much storage does the database occupy now? The category table must've shrunk quite a bit.

Thanks. I understand. I was just wondering if there are more clean up can be done. If not, that's fine too. The tables need to be re-optimized to show the space saved but yeah, the wiki used to be 13% of all of s3 (more than 900 wikis), now it's 9% before the optimizations.

We also plan on deleting most comment pages (ns102). Specifically those that were created by bots and never contributed to by human editors. I estimate that in the end the wiki should be left with ~2.5M total pages.

By the way, your figure for the number of categories is pre-purge. There are only ~140k categories left. We'll be deleting a few tens of thousands more, but this requires more bot work to empty them first.
