The article examines the features of the geographical description of Italy in the early Medieval intellectual  tradition. The Lombard author Pavel Deacon is one of the figures of the “Carolingian Renaissance”, was of aristocratic origin  and a native of the Duchy of Friuli. Following the principles of chorography, in the second book of the History of the Lombards, he divided the territory of Italy into 18 historical regions in almost full accordance with its administrative structure under Diocletian. In our opinion, when considering this issue, the author refers to the Notitia Dignitatum (5th century), an important reference book on military and civilian positions of the late Roman Empire, which briefly lists the provinces of each of its dioceses, including Italy. All this speaks to Paul’s deep respect for the classical and Late Antique heritage, which is also confirmed by his positive assessments of the reign of Emperor Justinian I the Great, his admiration for ancient mythology and the work of outstanding authors of the past – Pliny the Elder, Priscian of Caesarea, Arator, Cassiodorus, Venantius Fortunatus, etc. At the same time, it is surprising that the pages of the History of the Lombards do not contain detailed descriptions of the numerous duchies of the Lombard Kingdom and the scattered Byzantine possessions on the peninsula in the 8th century. Little attention is also paid to the natural conditions of Italy, but despite this, the dichotomy
"North-South" is noticeable throughout the geographical excursion. The northern province of Venice is actually contrasted with the hot Apulia, but the author does not directly name the best place for the Lombards to live.

At the end of the XIII century and the start of the XIV two kings of Georgia, Davit VI  the ‘Junior’ and Davit VII ‘Senior’ were conducting basically different foreign policy. When later was trying to warm his relations with Mongols, former was trying to ally himself with their enemies. Among those the most influential and the strongest of allies, which Davit the ‘Junior’ gained was Egyptian Mamlūk Sultanate. In the past historiography this alliance was understood as a victory of Davit’s strong diplomacy, but what was the price for this alliance was less studied. The objective of this article is to show, based on the analyses of the narrative sources, including notarial documents, that one of the counter-proposal from the kingdom of Imereti was the supplying Mamlūk’s with slaves. And how this alliance was one of the important element in a creation a much larger anti-Ilkhanate alliance and the foundational piece for the late Medieval Mediterranean slave trade triangle.

Orifices were prominent in early modern healing practices because they connected the inside of the body with the outside, for example, as channels through which to remove harmful matter. But they could become clogged, develop pathological growths or let out what should stay inside. The resulting inflamed veins, hernias or prolapses were the remit of surgeons, whose varied interventions and forms of education historians are reassessing. This article examines how orifices, in particular anuses and genitals, were depicted in a set of plates produced in Rome in the 1660s that was linked to surgeon Guglielmo Riva's teaching activities. While placing these pictures within pedagogical techniques and the changing visual tradition of surgical operations to which they belonged, I explore how the male trainee surgeons would have received the most graphic images. Drawing on studies of early modern visual culture and the history of male sociability, I reconstruct the overlapping meanings that the pictures could have acquired. I argue that their instructions for how to intervene on male bodies were framed by concerns about sodomy, which, while probably common, in early modern Rome was also closely policed, not least using surgeons' medico-legal advice. By contrast, the pictures also shared in the long-standing association of orifices with carnivalesque humour. While some visual strategies might have been adopted to minimise that, entertainment was integral to education. When contextualised both in their visual and medical tradition and the social and cultural frames in which they were received, these images of orifices enrich our understanding of premodern perceptions of bodies and their boundaries.

This essay examines how medieval Rome was rediscovered between the nineteenth and twentieth centuries through a complex interplay of scholarship, politics, archaeology, restoration, and urban transformation. It argues that the city’s medieval past, never wholly absent from Rome’s fabric, was nonetheless redefined by competing ideological agendas after 1870, when the new capital of unified Italy became the stage for conflicting visions of Roman, papal, and national identity. From Séroux d’Agincourt and the reconstruction debates surrounding San Paolo fuori le mura to the rise of Christian archaeology, new research institutions, archival access, archaeological discoveries, exhibitions, and restoration campaigns, the article reconstructs the fragmented process by which medieval Rome entered modern historical consciousness. It also shows how Fascist policies selectively appropriated this heritage, privileging monumental forms aligned with imperial romanità, while other scholars and institutions preserved more nuanced and historically layered interpretations of the city’s medieval past.

This report deals with the book maintained at the personal library of emigrant writer, residing in the Europe after World War II, doctor of philosophy, Ilia Kuchukhidze, in particular, “The National Energy” by Geronti Kikodze. Desire to make this report was caused by the fact that it contains the notes of young people living in 20s of the 20th century (after Sovietization of the country), many of which deserve particular attention, as they reveal worldview of these young people. The book contains Simon Chikovani’s inscription, stating that he had gifted this work by Geronti Kikodze to Ilia Kuchukhidze; on one of the pages, Ambrosi Makharadze (future famous lawyer) has written “this is a good book”; on the other page, he has written: “Amb. Makharadze – to Sharashenidze” (i.e., we can see that he has gave this book to their friend); the inscriptions demonstrate that this book achieved Alexander Sharashenidze and the latter, as a sign of his appreciation, has underlined one of the paragraphs of Kikodze’s article (“Fight and Agreement”), mentioning that the nations have no permanent friends or enemies and he has made his signature there: “Sharashenidze Alexandre”. There are in this book notes by others...
In relation with Geronti Kikodze’s article about Vazha-Pshavela, Ilia Kuchukhidze wrote: “Vazha was not a contemporary symbolist”; and on the letter, where Geronti Kikodze discussed heavy condition of his contemporary Georgian national architecture, Ilia Kuchukhidze wrote: “We are on the way of degradation”. Mentioned writer, in exile, fought for strengthening of the national awareness for entire his life and his inscriptions on Geronti Kikodze’s book show that similar to his friends, he supported in Soviet Georgia the national liberation movement and served to these ideas since he was young.
“The National Energy” by Geronti Kikodze was unacceptable for the USSR in 20s (it was regarded as a nationalist work). We can see one of the examples of how this banned book travelled between young people of that period and this shows one of the small but interesting episodes of the history of 20s.

Defining the limits of this contribution is complex, since it requires framing synthetically a concept which was polysemic and variable over time. The suburbium of Rome was (or may have been) at the same time a geographical, administrative, economic, and also political entity, whose boundaries changed several times in the period between late antiquity and the Middle Ages. From a geographic point of view, the suburbium is the flat or slightly hilly area with a predominantly volcanic and sedimentary geological matrix, running along the lower course of the Tiber, in the middle of which Rome was built. It is bounded to the west by the Tyrrhenian Sea, to the north by Lake Bracciano, the Sabatini mountains, and the hills upon which Formello, Sacrofano, Castelnuovo di Porto, and Capena stand; to the northeast by the hills behind Monterotondo and Mentana, to the east by the Tiburtini and Prenestini mountains, and to the south by the Colli Albani and Tuscolani. With the possible exception of the Tiburtini and Prenestini mountains, which rise quite abruptly from the plain, these boundaries are more transitional zones than real barriers, and in some cases, it is difficult to define precisely where the suburbium ends and other zones begin. This is especially true on the coast, but the problem also arises in other places, such as the valley area between the Prenestini mountains and the Tuscolani hills. From a geological point of view, the volcanic matrix was formed by eruptions in the volcanic districts of the Sabatini mountains, the Colli Albani, and Tuscolani mountains, while the sedimentary matrix was generated by the fluvial plain of the Tiber as well as other minor watercourses that flow towards the Tyrrhenian Sea, chiefly the Arrone, the outlet of Lake Bracciano. This latter mainly affects the areas close to the sea and has expanded significantly since the Roman and late antique period; the current locations of Ostia Antica and the port of Trajan, originally adjacent to the coastline, are now about 3 km distant from it.

Augustin hat das excidium urbis Romae, wie er die Katastrophe von 410 nennt, 1 aus der Perspektive des Bischofs von Hippo in Predigten, Briefen und dann auch in den ersten Büchern von De civitate dei kommentiert; 2 er hat sich vor seiner Gemeinde und im Gedankenaustausch mit Freunden und Gegnern über sie geäußert, über die Folgen, das Leid der Betroffenen, die Zerstörung der Stadt, 3 er hat zur Barmherzigkeit gegenüber den Flüchtlingen aufgerufen, die bereits vor 410 nach Africa gekommen waren und nun erneut kamen. 4 Seine Kommentare zu dem Ereignis sind bemerkenswert pragmatisch und nüchtern, dabei aber auch theologisch fundiert: Augustin wertet die Bedeutung der irdischen, materiellen Existenz der Ewigen Stadt (der Roma aeterna) ab im Vergleich mit der Ewigkeit des Seins, das die Menschen im Jenseits erwartet. Excavations in 2011, 2016, and 2020 at two Tragurium cemetery sites- the Tragurium Communal Necropolis (TCN) at the Dobrić and Muline sites and a Roman villa at the Dragulin site (VR) revealed the burials of those interred during the Roman period (roughly between 50 BCE-ACE 600). Included in the funerary assemblage were the remains of over 70 individuals who died under the age of two years (with the majority dying around 40 gestational weeks). These individuals exhibited extreme manifestations of metabolic disease, including CO, PH, and periosteal deposition in patterns suggestive of rickets and scurvy. Given the typical Roman diet and the coastal location, the identification of metabolic disease necessitated an understanding of the cultural context--were there cultural factors that limited the consumption of Vitamin C rich foods (by the mother, given the young age at death of the individuals studied) or limited the amount of exposure to sunlight (to inhibit the synthesis of Vitamin D)? Was the metabolic disease due to environmental contaminants such as exposure to lead? This poster presents preliminary results of 40 individuals with paired paleopathological analysis and elemental lead testing. Here, we correlate the estimated age at death, pathological condition, and lead concentration for these individuals. Findings suggest that paleopathological changes consistent with metabolic disease reflect lead-induced pathology within this cemetery population. The prevalence of high lead levels in preterm and perinatal individuals further implicates maternal exposure during pregnancy and lactation as a primary

Nell’ambito del corso Roma e il Rinascimento, tenuto da Francesca Mattei presso il Dipartimento di Architettura dell'Università degli Studi Roma Tre, studentesse e studenti hanno svolto l’esercitazione Vivere con le rovine. É stato chiesto loro di analizzare in modo approfondito un disegno rinascimentale raffigurante una porzione di Roma e di confrontarlo con la configurazione attuale della città, realizzando una fotografia scattata dallo stesso punto di vista ritratto dal disegno. Il titolo dell’esercitazione echeggia uno degli obiettivi del progetto VeLoCi, volto all’analisi dell'esperienza della convivenza con le rovine nella sua dimensione simbolica e materiale. Rome has always had a privileged relationship with antiquity, with different nuances in the Middle Ages. Citizens, elites, and foreign rulers reused classical elements in architecture, art, and epigraphy as symbols of prestige, wealth, and legitimacy. Ancient materials and inscriptions were reemployed not only for decoration but also for their symbolic power: phrases and terms from classical literature circulated in Rome long before the Renaissance. Ancient heritage thus became a tool of authority and self-determination, especially for the Commune, which claimed continuity with Rome’s past, but also for ecclesiastical power, which exploited it for prestige. Medieval epigraphic practices anticipated Renaissance models, and their study reveals diverse medieval attitudes toward antiquity and the roots of later classical revival

According to German scientist, Ludwig Preller, Medea, character known in the Greek mythology was goddess of the moon in early period. In this article we made attempt to clarify the meaning of Greek name Mēdeia. In our opinion, in the research related to genesis of this name, we need to take into account ancient Greek word Mḗnē (“Moon”) and the forms of such lexemes denoting the moon in one of the previous periods, as: modern English Moon, German Mond (there is a view that the mentioned lexemes originate from Proto-Indo-European root *me/n/ses-), also – Latin Deus (from which originates Italian Dio /“God”) and other words of this semantics and we offer that the name Mēdeia could mean Moon Goddess.
We consider, in Hellenic myths and ancient Georgian folk epos – Amiraniani, there is mythologized trace of one and the same historical events. In this respect, the notable facts are that the name of Amiraniani’s female haracter has the moon semantics – Kamar (this is the name of Arabian origin /ḳamar – “Moon”)… Amiran fought with Kamar’s father, took the daughter from him, Kamar at a  time betrayed her father and supported him in fight with her father; Medea has similarly betrayed her father, Aeetes and helped Jason to steal the Golden Fleece…
As Ludwig Preller mentioned, Corinthian myth presents Medea’s father Aeetes (son of Helios, god of sun) as the character initially living in Corinth, further he, together with his daughter moved to Colchis. In the article we offer the view that the mentioned myth describes the actual historical fact that there were the temples built in Corinth after Aeetes and Medea and later similar temples were built in Colchis as well and this, possibly, occurred in the period, when there emerged Greek polices (8th-7th BC). In this work we assumed that the episodes of betrayal of their fathers’ families by Medea and Kamar describe the fight between a local Colchian and in a Greek polis located temples in mythological form. We suppose that one of the local temples, the main cult of which was assumedly Amiran, attempted to spread its influence over the temple of Goddess Medea subordinated to Aeetes before; that Medea’s chapel desired to get under this influence and these were the facts that were described by Georgian myth in figurative form…
The article admits that possibly, there can be identified the specific persons related to Colchis in the myths, for example, we can assume that a priestess in Medea’s preaching house with the name identical to her goddess, desired to be under the influence of Colchian temple and she betrayed the temple of the sun named after Aeetes, with which she was closely related before…
We suppose that similar to the Hellenic myths, in the later period, the Georgian ones were changed as well (e.g. we offer that Kamar obtained her name after 7th-8th centuries, at a time of Arabian expansion to Georgia and before, she had the other name meaning moon).
The work offers some other views as well.

The depiction of ruins is a recurring theme in Arabic literature, originating in its foundational textspre-Islamic poetry-and persisting through medieval poetry, geographical literature, and Adab anthologies. Drawing on these sources, this paper presents an excursus on the theme of ruins in medieval, pre-modern, and Nahḍa-era texts. The central hypothesis is to show how the representations of ruins, characterized by the themes of wonder (ʿajab) and admonition (ʿibra), reflect the perception of what is time, history and the complex cartography of the Islamic past(s). Nel 2003 il Professor Arioli ha pubblicato il libro Le città mirabili. Labirinto arabo medievale, un'opera fra l'erudizione arabistica e il saggio letterario. Si tratta di una raccolta di descrizioni di città reali e fantastiche tratte dalla letteratura araba medievale, un labirinto di testi in cui lettore è libero di vagare guidato unicamente dalla propria curiosità, senza che riferimenti di contesto come la cronologia, il nome dell'autore o il titolo originale dell'opera disturbino il suo viaggio. Al fine di accentuare il carattere evocativo, se vogliamo straniante, suscitato dalla descrizione dei luoghi antichi, lontani, immaginari, il libro non presenta mappe, nonostante le descrizioni siano tratte, principalmente, dalla letteratura geografica. Il fine del Professor Arioli, d'altra parte, è quello di ancorare le sue città mirabili all'immaginazione piuttosto che alla realtà, come egli stesso esplicita nella famosa citazione di Melville: «It is not written down in any map; true places never are». L'apparente disordine di questo itinerario si ricompone nell'assoluto rigore filologico nelle scelte traduttive e nelle appendici, in cui sono esposte le biografie degli autori e un indice delle concordanze. This article proposes a new reading of John Milton’s Paradise Lost (1667), arguing that the epic functions as a subversive topography of Rome under the Barberini papacy. Drawing upon archival evidence of Milton’s 1638-1639 Italian journey, papal diplomatic correspondence, and the material history of Bernini’s architectural transformations, this study demonstrates that the infernal capital of Pandemonium encodes specific satirical references to the Barberini palace-complex and St. Peter’s Basilica.

In the intellectual tradition of the Middle Ages, translation was often conceived as an exegetical process rather than a purely linguistic operation. This article examines such an interpretive approach through the Georgian translations of Gregory the Theologian produced by the 11th-century Georgian translator Davit Tbeli. Although Davit does not provide explicit commentaries, his translations reveal a consistent interpretive stance expressed through additions, omissions, paraphrases, and lexical choices. These interventions reflect his understanding of the theological content of the source texts and their intended reception by a Georgian audience.
The study reconstructs Davit Tbeli’s activity on the basis of manuscript evidence and situates his work within the broader context of Georgian translation practices, particularly in relation to Euthymius the Hagiorite. While sharing the general aim of making complex texts accessible, Davit adopts a more restrained method, remaining closer to the Greek original. His consistent handling of theological terminology and biblical quotations positions him as a transitional figure between the Athonite and later Hellenophile translation traditions, and as an important stage in the development of Georgian theological-philosophical vocabulary.

The first programme proposed by the “Commissione dei Rioni”, in 1892, included the study of all known medieval houses,
especially in the district of Trastevere, and of five fortified complexes, as the Anguillara tower and palace. The Anguillara
complex in Trastevere had been in a state of decay for years, and the town-planning scheme compiled in 1873, and the
following one compiled in 1883, required wide changes and the tower demolition to allow the construction of Viale del Re.
Therefore, since 1892, the members were involved in the protection of the fortification remains and, carrying out a study
and an in-depth survey, discovered a second medieval tower, never hypothesized before. The essay focuses on the role played
by the Cultori, in particular on the crucial contribution by Rodolfo Kanzler, architect and archaeologist – disciple of Giovan
Battista De Rossi – to whom the survey and the final report regarding the study are attributable.

The essay focuses on the lordship, then marquisate, of the Gonzaga over Mantua in the 15th century. It considers a broad group of sources in order to enlighten both male and female onomastics and to list names taken from different socio-professional contexts. Sources such as the registers of appointments to offices (1407-1500) or the lists of oaths of allegiance to the marquises (1479) – in which the names are all males – are juxtaposed with a list of the male and female recipients of a town-wide dispensatio of wheat (1417) and a sample of the onomastic indices of notarial deeds registered at the officium registri instrumentorum of Mantua (1417, 1444, 1479, again with male and female actors). The analysis of such an anthology of different ‘snapshots’ of groups of names at various levels of the social scale, allows us to explore onomastic possibilities and variants in the city and in the countryside, and over a broad and diverse chronology which spans over the 15th century.

L’alsacien Johannes Burckard (vers 1450-1506) a connu une
destinée hors du commun. Originaire d’un petit village monastique de la
vallée de la Bruche, Niederhaslach, il sera chassé de Strasbourg pour des
délits de vol et de faux en écriture et cherchera fortune à Rome. Dans la
ville des papes, Burckard connaîtra une ascension extraordinaire, jusqu’à
devenir maître de cérémonie de la chapelle pontificale et, à la fin de sa vie,
évêque d’Orte et Civita Castellana. De Niederhaslach à Rome, en passant
par Strasbourg, nous nous intéresserons aux lieux où Burckard a vécu et,
comme c’est le cas pour sa résidence romaine, laissé son empreinte.

In sala operatoria, accanto al chirurgo, opera una figura la cui competenza è tanto essenziale quanto discreta: lo strumentista. Non tocca il paziente, non pratica l'incisione, eppure l'intero intervento dipende dalla sua maestria. Conosce ogni strumento, ne prevede l'uso, lo prepara al momento giusto, lo passa al chirurgo con gesto preciso. Un bisturi fuori tempo, una pinza inadeguata, e l'operazione fallisce non per incompetenza del medico ma per difetto dell'assistenza strumentale. La ricerca che stiamo per intraprendere esige analoga sapienza. Lo studioso che si accinge a esplorare i rapporti tra Chiesa e potere politico nell'arco dei secoli non può procedere disarmato, né tantomeno equipaggiato a caso. Deve conoscere i propri strumenti: dove trovarli, quando impiegarli, come maneggiarli. Un'enciclopedia consultata troppo tardi, una fonte primaria ignorata, una bibliografia antiquata non aggiornata-e il lavoro, per quanto brillante nelle intenzioni, rivela lacune strutturali che nessuna eloquenza stilistica può mascherare. Questo documento non è un elenco bibliografico. È una mappa degli strumenti essenziali per chi voglia lavorare sulla storia del papato e dei suoi rapporti con i poteri temporali. Come lo strumentista che prepara il campo operatorio disponendo ogni utensile secondo la sequenza prevista dell'intervento, così lo storico deve saper predisporre il proprio arsenale bibliografico, riconoscendo a ciascuno strumento la funzione propria, il momento d'uso, i limiti e le potenzialità.

exploitation of fish resources. Coastal lakes have been used since ancient times, but still until very recent times, as real
tanks for fish farming. Also, through an ethnographic contribution relating to fish farming in the lakes during the last
century, under the ownership of the Caetani family, the fishing techniques in the Pontine lagoons are analysed. Particular
interest is reserved for the hydraulic management of the Rio Martino, within its system of locks, for the organization of

Research in this area remains limited and fragmentary due to scarce written sources, few funerary inscriptions, and the widespread practice of burying within churches, which largely destroyed early medieval urban cemeteries. The chapter draws on surviving texts, inscriptions, and a close study of early medieval church phases, highlighting recent discoveries and suggesting directions for future research.

Il professor Agostino Paravicini Bagliani è senza dubbio uno dei più eminenti storici del Medioevo, noto per la profondità delle sue ricerche e per il suo essenziale contributo allo studio del papato. Nato a Bergamo nel 1943, ha iniziato il suo percorso accademico presso l'Università di Friburgo, dove ha conseguito il dottorato nel 1968. Dopo un periodo di ricerca a Roma, presso la Biblioteca Apostolica Vaticana, si è trasferito a Losanna, dove per molti anni ha occupato la cattedra di storia medievale. Dal 2008 al 2024, il professor Paravicini Bagliani ha presieduto la Società Internazionale per lo Studio del Medioevo Latino (sismel), istituzione di prestigio internazionale impegnata nella promozione degli studi medievali, della quale oggi è il Presidente onorario. Durante il suo mandato, ha diretto importanti progetti dedicati alla codicologia, all'antropologia storica e alle digital humanities, rafforzando il ruolo della sismel come riferimento nel settore. Tra le sue opere più significative spicca Il corpo del papa 1 , considerato un lavoro pionieristico nel campo degli studi sulla corporeità. Questo volume analizza la percezione e la rappresentazione del corpo del pontefice nel Medioevo, mettendo in luce l'intricato rapporto tra spiritualità, potere e cultura riguardo alla dimensione corporea. L'incontro da cui trae origine questa intervista si è svolto nel maggio 2024 a Roma, presso la Pontificia Università della Santa Croce.

This is the rst volume of a two-volume work. Volume 2 can be found here. The city of Rome had a remarkable and complex urban continuity even after antiquity and it provided a model of urban living for other cities throughout the Middle Ages. Much existing research has nevertheless focused instead on Rome as the seat of papal power or as an in uential idea rather than a real place. This volume radically refocuses our attention on Rome's inhabitants, their identities, relationships, institutions, experiences, agencies, and spaces, and on how these local aspects interacted with the city's universal character. It also bridges two periods of the history of Rome that are typically separated, namely late antiquity and the early Middle Ages, through a unique design of mirrored essays on key themes of Rome's urban history. This volume brings to an Anglophone audience new scholarship from scholars across Europe and America.

This essay retraces the integration of St Agatha’s cult into Rome between the 6th and 9th centuries, showing how successive popes used her figure to shape religious identity and consolidate orthodoxy. From early suburban foundations under Gelasius I and Symmachus to Gregory the Great’s anti Arian re consecration in the Suburra, Agatha’s presence expands through relics, liturgy, and imagery. A newly contextualized 7th century portrait further illuminates her role in Rome’s devotional landscape. Under Hadrian I and Paschal I, Agatha becomes a key model of female sanctity, paired with major Roman saints and integrated into influential visual programs, confirming her full assimilation into both Roman and Byzantine traditions.
