Deputy Struck by DUI Driver After Selfless Act of Heroism Has Long Road to Recovery
A Miami-Dade Sheriff’s Office deputy was critically injured after being struck by
a DUI driver on the Florida Turnpike, but body camera footage shows he likely saved
another officer’s life moments before impact. After multiple surgeries and months
of rehabilitation, the deputy was honored for his bravery and recognized for his ongoing
commitment to helping others.
Deputy Becomes First Original Member of The Hive to Earn Jiu-Jitsu Black Belt
Deputy Eddie Quintana became the first original member of The Hive jiu-jitsu program
at the Miami-Dade Sheriff’s Training Center to earn a black belt after progressing
through every belt level over seven years. His achievement highlights how the program
builds confidence and effective control techniques that can reduce use of force during
combative encounters.
Inside MDSO’s Guardian Program: Training for Potential Lethal Threats at Schools
Fifteen graduates of the Miami-Dade Sheriff’s Office Guardian Academy completed intensive
training to prepare for potential active shooter threats in schools, emphasizing vigilance
and coordination with law enforcement. The program, created after the 2018 Parkland
tragedy, has expanded to include public, charter, and private schools, with rigorous
standards surpassing typical law enforcement firearm qualifications.
A Split-Second Decision and a Life Saved by an MDSO Lieutenant
Lt. Carlos Suarez of the Miami-Dade Sheriff’s Office dove into a canal to help rescue
a trapped driver after a crash, earning the Lifesaving Award, Bronze Medal of Valor,
and Distinguished Deputy of the Month. Despite the honors, Suarez emphasized he was
just doing his job, showing courage built on years of patrol experience.
