Museum institutions and fashion: determinants of museums’ involvement in fashion-related activities

In recent years, however, they seem to be becoming more visible, both in response to the interest of curators and audiences in the field and due to the development of new links and forms of cooperation between museum institutions and the creative sector. The aim of the paper is to propose a new quantitative approach to assessing the extent of museums' engagement with fashion, and to consider the factors determining the presence of diverse activities related to textiles, garments, fashion and fashion accessories in museums, with a view to furthering the discourse on the connections between museums and cultural and creative industries. The empirical analysis in the text is based on a comprehensive survey of Polish museums administered in 2022. This enabled us to consider how the intensity of museums' engagement in fashion-related activities may be measured and what characteristics of museums and their environments make them more likely to engage in a broader range of fashion-related endeavours or focus on a particular fashion-related activity type. Our goal is not only to diagnose the situation in the Polish context but to also contribute to the broader discussion on factors impacting museums' programme choices and performance.

AUTEX Research Journal, Vol. 24, No. 1, 2024, 20240005 , 2024

Nonetheless, in recent years in Poland, after over three decades of steady shrinkage, though the average scale of operations has continued to decline, the number of firms in the sector has been much more stable. In their analysis of the locations of apparel producers on the national level, the authors point to the changing geography of the sector in terms of its increased or diminishing relative presence in some areas. The links between location tendencies among firms in the clothing industry and other fashion-related institutions and initiatives are noted, as are new firms in the creative sector. The spatial patterns observed point to the ability of the resized sector to leverage emerging market opportunities and upgrade selectively, and to its broader evolution from a traditional towards a creative industry.

Research paper thumbnail of Sustainability by Polish designers – owners of small, independent fashion brands
Implementing sustainable development goals defined by UNESCO encompasses diverse activities and s... more Implementing sustainable development goals defined by UNESCO encompasses diverse activities and spheres of contemporary life, including the issues of responsible production and consumption (goal 12). The fashion sector is often mentioned in this context and considered both ethically and environmentally problematic, especially taking into account clothing overproduction coupled with decreasing of its quality and offshoring to non-European countries. Fashion designers-owners of independent fashion brands based in specific local contexts-seem to be especially well prepared to implement in practice the idea of sustainable fashion often also referred to as responsible, ethical or slow fashion. The paper presents results of a qualitative exploratory research among Polish small, independent fashion firms. Analysing in-depth interviews with creative entrepreneurs based in different parts of Poland (Kraków, Łódź, Bytom, Warsaw, other cities and towns), the investigation considers issues such as: how do they understand the concept of sustainable fashion, how do they implement it in their entrepreneurial activities, what challenges and opportunities do they see in this respect, especially taking into account that their entrepreneurial activities situate them between the more symbolic-economy oriented creative sector and the more practically-oriented traditional garment and apparel sector?

Firstly, she focuses on the economic and social significance of private investors as important actors implementing heritage restoration projects. Although these initiatives are often primarily commercial in character, they may nonetheless exert a strong, broadly positive influence on local and regional development processes, especially if a cluster of such projects develops within a relatively small area richly endowed with a specific type of heritage. Secondly, she provides empirical evidence from Central and Eastern Europe, a region little explored to date by studies of this type. Accordingly, the article examines the specific context of post-1989 private heritage-oriented investments in historic palace and garden residences in the region of Lower Silesia in Poland, a heritage previously unwanted, ethnically and ideologically dissonant, but nowadays being rediscovered to an increasing extent.

The presented analyses and conclusions are based on the results of the national survey on museum operations in 2019–2021 conducted by the paper’s Authors jointly with the National Institute for Museums and Public Collections in the first quarter of 2022, and allowing to review this phenomenon nationally. The survey’s goal was to consider various formats of the presence of such objects and references to them in museums, both those of a more traditional character (e.g., including fashion-related exhibits in the museum collection, their conservation, studying, displaying in exhibitions), as well as of a newer character (e.g., cooperation with clothing companies and fashion designers, holding fashion shows, workshops, and fashion...

Artists are considered a professional group with specific spatial preferences and behaviours, whose residential decisions are to a large extent influenced by economic and aesthetic factors.
