Overview

"Moon Man" is a 2022 Chinese sci-fi comedy film directed by Zhang Chiyu, starring Shen Teng and Ma Li. Adapted from the webtoon of the same name by Korean cartoonist Cho Seok, the film tells the story of humanity launching the "Moon Shield Project" on the Moon to defend against an asteroid impact. Maintenance worker Dugu Yue is accidentally left behind alone on the lunar base. Believing himself to be the last human in the universe, he struggles to survive on the Moon and attempts to return to Earth. The film blends sci-fi settings with comedic elements, exploring themes of loneliness, hope, and humanity against a grand cosmic backdrop. Upon release, it achieved outstanding box office results, becoming one of the significant works in the history of Chinese sci-fi comedy cinema.

Plot

To defend against an asteroid named "π," humanity launches the "Moon Shield Project" on the Moon, using it as a base to deploy a protective barrier for Earth. After the project's success, a full emergency evacuation is ordered. However, maintenance worker Dugu Yue (played by Shen Teng), engrossed in writing a love letter to the team leader Ma Lanxing (played by Ma Li), misses the evacuation notice and is left alone at the lunar base. Just as he loses all hope, thinking he has become the "last human in the universe," he discovers that an equally forgotten, irritable kangaroo named "King Kong Rat" is also on the Moon. The man and the kangaroo begin a series of hilarious confrontations and coexistence on the lunar surface.

Dugu Yue attempts to use the base's resources to contact Earth and save himself, leading to many comedic situations. Meanwhile, humanity on Earth has not gone extinct. They accidentally discover Dugu Yue's survival situation on the Moon through a live broadcast. This globally broadcast "lunar solo journey" provides immense spiritual encouragement to the post-catastrophe human population. Ultimately, to address a new space crisis, Dugu Yue makes a critical choice concerning his own life and the fate of humanity.

It successfully combined localized comedic expression with hardcore sci-fi visual spectacle, proving the immense potential of the "sci-fi+" model in the Chinese market.

The film's scenes of Dugu Yue surviving in loneliness and finding joy in hardship, along with the heroic spirit of sacrificing oneself for the greater good, sparked widespread social resonance during its release.
