Highlights
Eve: The night before the founding ceremony on October 1, 1949. Engineer Lin Zhiyuan (Huang Bo) must ensure the electric flagpole at Tiananmen Square works flawlessly. Racing through the night to find the right metal alloy, his desperate quest embodies an entire nation's preparation for its most historic moment.
Hello Beijing: The eve of the 2008 Beijing Olympics. Cab driver Zhang Beijing (Ge You) has scored a precious opening ceremony ticket. When a boy from Wenchuan gets into his cab, he makes an unexpected choice. Ge You's trademark deadpan humor turns a small act of kindness into something profoundly moving.
Cultural Significance
What makes My People, My Country special is its focus on ordinary individuals rather than great leaders or grand battles. The engineer raising a flag, the scientist hiding his identity, the boy watching TV in a narrow alley — these anonymous faces form the truest memory of a nation.
